Overview Global warming is one of the most pressing international concerns that require urgent attention and solutions worldwide. In face of such global challenge, the value of effective use of biomass a renewable, biologically derived organic resource is receiving considerable attention within Japan and the international community. East Asia is rich in biomass resources, due to its climate and rich agricultural resources, and has a high potential for effectively utilizing biomass for energy, materials, and for other economic and environmental use. While placing significant priority on meeting the growing food demand and feeding the expanding population in this region, Japan in partnership with countries in East Asia seeks to promote the development and utilization of biomass as an effective measure to diversify energy sources, establish sustainable agriculture, and reduce global greenhouse gas emissions. Since March 2006, Japan has been promoting the utilization of biomass within its Biomass Nippon Strategy by establishing Biomass Towns throughout Japan. The numbers of such Biomass Towns have been steadily increasing, reaching up to 283 municipalities in October 2010. At the 2008 Meeting of the ASEAN Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry plus Three (AMAF+3) in Vietnam, East Asia Biomass Town Concept Promotion Project was proposed by Japan and endorsed by the AMAF+3 countries. The Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives (MOAC) of Thailand thru the Department of Agriculture (DOA) addressed this initiative in launching a Biomass Town project in Thailand. In response to this, the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries of the Japan government (MAFF) commenced a three-year project in 2008 to develop the first Biomass Town in East Asia in Thailand and Vietnam in cooperation with the Government of both countries. The project sites are Na Duang Village, a small and typical agricultural based village in north-east zone in Thailand and Cu Chi District in the northernmost part of Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam. In cooperation with the MAFF, field research was conducted regarding estimation of biomass existing quantity, nutrition composition of each Biomass and possibilities and demands for biomass based products, such as biogas, organic fertilizer, fermented animal feed, and the first Biomass Town Concept in the two countries were developed by the stakeholders of the Project. 1

Objective The objective of the international symposium is to present the Biomass Town Projects in Thailand and in Vietnam, and to further disseminate the Biomass Town Concept to other ASEAN countries. Field tour to Na Duang Village, Na Duang District, Loei Province in Thailand is also scheduled for the participants to obtain the concrete idea of the efforts to materialize the Biomass Town Concept in Thailand. 2
