Chesterfield Champions Events in 2018 Thursday 19th April: Champions Breakfast Tourism and Visitor Economy Focused on tourism and Chesterfield s visitor economy, the latest Champions event highlighted Marketing Peak District & Derbyshire s role to promote the town, alongside a presentation of the working plans for Chesterfield Borough Council s visitor economy strategy. There was also a short interactive workshop encouraging Champions to share and discuss their views about how tourism to the town can be improved.

Wednesday 28th February: Champions Breakfast A Sporting Town Champions heard about sporting events and opportunities in the town this year including the 2018 UEFA European Men s Under-17 Championship Final Tournament, Custom Solar Chesterfield Festival of Cricket and the Redbrik Chesterfield Half Marathon. A representative from Queen's Park Sports Centre also spoke about the health and wellbeing activities available in Chesterfield.

Wednesday 24th January: Champions Breakfast Your say on the future of Destination Chesterfield Champions were given the opportunity to shape the future of Destination Chesterfield and the Chesterfield Champions Network. They discussed topics such as how can the tourism and visitor economy be improved in the town, investment that they would like to see, how they can support local businesses and making the most of the Champion network.

Chesterfield Champions Events in 2017 Thursday 7 th December: Chesterfield Champions Christmas Celebration The Chesterfield Champions Christmas Celebration at St Thomas Church was a relaxed social networking event where Champions had the opportunity to take a look around the St Thomas Christmas Tree festival before it opened to the general public. At the event the Destination Chesterfield team thanked Champions for their continued support in 2017 whilst sharing a festive tipple and buffet.

Thursday 2nd November: Made in Chesterfield Launch Event Champions met at the newly refurbished Barrow Hill Roundhouse for an evening drinks reception to launch the Made in Chesterfield Festival a month-long celebration of the town s manufacturing and engineering sectors sponsored by the University of Derby and MSE Hiller. Hosted at Britain s only working Roundhouse, they learnt about the on site engineering facilities and heard from Professor Mark Robinson, Director of NewRail (a tenant of the Roundhouse) and Professor of Rail Systems Engineering at Newcastle University, who gave an overview of past projects undertaken at the Roundhouse as well as research plans for the future. Made in Chesterfield is coordinated by Destination Chesterfield in partnership with MSE Hiller, United Cast Bar Ltd, NatWest, Derbyshire Education Business Partnership and Placing Futures.

Thursday 28th September: Local Funding Opportunities Champions heard about local funding opportunities to boost their organisation. Including speakers from the D2N2 Digital Growth Programme, D2 Energy Efficiency Project and the Northern Powerhouse investment fund. Champions also heard from Wendy Blunt, from the Chesterfield Dementia Action Alliance, will also explained the benefits of becoming a Dementia Friendly Business. She also ran a Dementia Friends session after the event for a number of Champions.

Wednesday 6th September: Invest in Chesterfield Champions enjoyed an update on recent and upcoming investment at Derbyshire County Council s flagship development, Markham Vale and heard from Henry Boot Developments on recent businesses to join Markham Vale North including Ferdinand Bilstein UK, Great Bear Distribution and Gist. Alongside the Markham Vale update, Champions heard about the Sheffield City Region Jobs Board a new, free service designed to help businesses find and retain talented, locally-based employees. Hosted by automotive aftermarket specialist, Ferdinand Bilstein, the event also allowed Champions to go behind the scenes at its new, state-of-the-art distribution centre.

Thursday 13th July: Chesterfield Food Producer of the Year Chesterfield Champions were invited to join Destination Chesterfield s food and drink judging panel to help select 3 finalists and the winner of the 2017 Chesterfield Food Producer of the Year award (presented by Chesterfield College). Judges tried a variety of samples from a range of local Food Producers including Teresa Lambarelli, Northern Tea Merchants, Brampton Brewery, Liza Bakes and many more.

Thursday 22nd June: Champions Breakfast Northern Gateway At this breakfast Champions heard more about 20 million Northern Gateway Scheme, including the plans for multi-storey car park, business enterprise centre and the former Coop development on Elder Way. An update, including information that was shared at the event, can be found here. There was also the opportunity for Champions to hear from their hosts at Staveley Hall who then took them on a tour of the recently refurbished venue. On top of this, Champions were also updated on the recent SCR Devolution news and the launch of the new Redbrik Chesterfield Half Marathon.

Wednesday 26th April: Champions Breakfast Skills Funding Champions were given the opportunity to hear about recruitment opportunities and skills funding in the Derbyshire area from our speakers at Learn Direct, CT Skills and DBC Training. They also heard from Fairplay - the event hosts - who discussed the charity and its business 100 club and what Champions can do to get involved.

Thursday 23rd February: Champions Breakfast Your say on the Future of Destination Chesterfield Champions were given the opportunity to shape the future of Destination Chesterfield and the Chesterfield Champions Network. They discussed topics such as what business support Destination Chesterfield can offer to help business to grow and what events or initiatives can be introduced to increase footfall to the town.

Wednesday 25th January: Champions Breakfast HS2 and Chesterfield Champions heard from representatives from the HS2 and local authorities on what the latest proposals for HS2 mean for Chesterfield. They discovered more about the current consultation about the proposed service to serve Chesterfield Train Station, what that will mean for future regeneration of the town and the proposed maintenance depot at Staveley.

Chesterfield Champions Events in 2016 Monday 19th December: Christmas Carols and Reception at the Crooked Spire Champions met with Chesterfield Parish Church and the Federation of Small Business for a relaxed social event at the Crooked Spire. They enjoyed music from the church choir and a word from the Bishop of Derby followed by a Christmas drinks reception and canapés. This was a great informal opportunity for Chesterfield Champions and members of the Federation of Small Business to catch up with other before the festive break.

Wednesday 2nd November: Made in Chesterfield launch at the University of Derby Chesterfield Campus Champions met for an evening drinks reception to officially launch Made in Chesterfield 2016 - a celebration of the manufacturing industry in the town. Held at the new University of Derby Chesterfield Campus, there were informative tours of the campus and its state of the art facilities and also a chance to find out about what courses are on offer and how they will benefit the local economy in the coming years.

Thursday 29th September: Invest in Chesterfield - Champions Breakfast at Markham Vale Champions heard from 4 speakers about various investment opportunities in the town. The event included an update from Henry Boot on the continuing development at Markham Vale and other regeneration schemes. A representative from the Digital Derbyshire provided information on the roll out of high speed broadband connectivity across Derbyshire whilst Chesterfield Borough Council provided an update on plans for the old Queens Park Sports Centre. Finally Peter Swallow, Chief Executive of Bolserstone, informed Champions on recent developments on the Waterside regeneration scheme. A small group of Champions were also given the opportunity to have a tour of one of the regeneration schemes at the Meter Provida Unit.

Wednesday 31st August: Champions Breakfast at Dunston Innovation Centre Champions heard about the Sheffield City Region Skills Bank; discovering how they could benefit from support, to invest in skills and expertise to drive business growth. The session, held at Dunston Innovation Centre, explained what criteria makes businesses eligible and how to create a Skills Deal which would allow Champions to receive funding to cover the majority of training costs. The role of our business community in improving Chesterfield s health and well-being was also discussed with a presentation from Chesterfield Borough Council.

Wednesday 13th July 2016: Food Producer of the Year 2016. Champions were invited to join Destination Chesterfield s food and drink judging panel to help select 3 finalists and the winner of the 2016 Chesterfield Food Producer of the Year award (sponsored by Casa Hotel). Judges scored samples from 15 local food producers including previous winners of the award Teresa Lambrelli, Liza Bakes and Granny Mary's.

Wednesday 29 th June 2016: Update on Sheffield City Region Devolution Deal Champions heard a more detailed update on the Sheffield City Region Devolution Deal which will see the borough benefit from a share of 900 million in funding over a 30 year period. Speakers included Chesterfield Borough Council Leader Cllr John Burrows and Chief Executive of Chesterfield Borough Council Huw Bowen, who together explained the borough's application to become a full constituent member of the Sheffield City Region Mayoral Combined Authority including: The benefits Chesterfield Borough Council believes the deal will bring and the economic case; More information about how the Mayoral combined authority will operate; Details about the upcoming public consultation set to begin in July.

Thursday 28 th April 2016: Chesterfield Waterside and Barrow Hill Roundhouse update Champions heard from Destination Chesterfield Chair, Peter Swallow on the progress at Chesterfield Waterside, which has recently moved into planning phase following a 2.7m grant from the Sheffield City Region Infrastructure Fund. Held at fellow Chesterfield Champion, Barrow Hill Roundhouse, the event also gave an update on exciting plans to turn Britain s only surviving operational roundhouse into a nationally-important museum, following the confirmation of a 1.17m grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund.

Thursday 25th February 2016: Have your say on the future of Destination Chesterfield. At the second Chesterfield Champions event of the year over 60 people came along to St Thomas Centre, to share their ideas and suggestions on the future of Destination Chesterfield and how they would like the town to be promoted over the next three years. Everything discussed during the morning will now be considered for inclusion in a new Destination Chesterfield implementation plan which will begin in April. Wednesday 6th January 2016: New Queen s Park Sports Centre and Sheffield City Region Devolution Deal At the first Chesterfield Champions event of the year over 120 people from local businesses discussed the Sheffield City Region Devolution proposal with a question and answer session delivered by Chief Executive of Chesterfield Borough Council and Destination Chesterfield board member, Huw Bowen and Leader of Chesterfield Borough Council, Cllr John Burrows.
