The Carbiner For sport and for good fellowship THE OFFICIAL NEWSLETTER OF THE CARBINE CLUB EDITION 4 of 2018 May, 2018 HK- Rugby Sevens ~ from Danny Zigall LONDON- April Newsletter ~from Terry McCaughey SA- AGM ~from John Condon OAM & Robbi Timms NSW Briefs COMING EVENTS The Carbiner is also available on the Club website at www.thecarbineclub.org All contributions to EDITION The Carbiner NUMBER welcomed 20 place Dec your 20, event 2017 & news on the record! Contact Merv Hill at carbiner@netspace.net.au CARBINE CLUB OF HONG KONG Rugby Sevens On Friday April 6th The Carbine Club of Hong Kong held is annual Rugby Sevens Luncheon at the Hong Kong Football Club. It kicked off at 12:00 noon for drinks with luncheon served at 12:45pm. There were 475 members and invited guests in attendance. In the audience we were honoured to have an impressive array of former internationals including Springboks Morne du Plessis and Jean de Villiers, Scots Gregor Townsend, Andy Nicol and Andy Hall, England s Peter Wheeler and Lawrence Dallagio, and Welshmen Ieuan Evans, Rob Howley and Warren Gatland. (Pic at left: Austin Knight, President John Ridley & Robert Jones) As usual the luncheon was kicked-off robustly by our silver-tongued Master of Ceremonies Murray Burton who prepped the guests for what would again be a terrific luncheon. Murray then proceeded to introduce our President of the Carbine Club of Hong Kong, Mr John Ridley, who welcomed all Members and guests. This was John s last luncheon as President of the Club. Murray next introduced the first speaker, John Smit, who retired from international rugby as the mostcapped Springbok of all time with 111 Test caps, and famously led the South African team to victory at the 2007 Rugby World Cup. John proposed The Toast to Rugby and told a wonderful story of Jason Leonard giving him his England shirt as a young man, illustrating the friendship and respect that underpins the values of the game. 1

Murray then introduced the colourful Robert Jones, the former Welsh international, and British and Irish Lion. An outstanding player in his teens, he represented Swansea RFC whilst still at school, and had 54 caps for Wales. Robert then regaled us at length with stories of the Lions victorious tour of Australia in 1989, and his memorable confrontations with his opposite number for the Wallabies, Nick Farr-Jones. He emphasized his many lifelong friendships that have been forged through rugby since that tour, saying that contrary perhaps to popular expectation, many of his best mates were English! Members and Guests were then entertained by the hilarious Austin Knight who hails from Manchester. The lunch raised about HK$ 220,000 in donations for the Hong Kong Rugby Union Community Foundation, who use sport as a medium to tackle social issues around health, education, social inclusion, disability and youth crime. The Carbine Club of Hong Kong wishes to specially thank CATHAY PACIFIC AIRWAYS for flying our guests to Hong Kong as well as the GRAND HYATT HOTEL for accommodating our guests. NSW Briefs CCNSW member Peter Kerr AM was recently acknowledged by the NSW Olympic Council with an Order of Merit award which was presented at their AGM in April. The NSWOC Order of Merit is presented to individuals who have achieved remarkable merit in the sporting world, either through personal achievement or contribution to the development of sport with no more than two awards given in any one year. A long term member of the Carbine Club in NSW, Peter has given extensive service on the committee including as President and he is a regular welcome visitor to other clubs. Peter and his wife Janine are heading to PNG for the Congress next week where his many Carbine friends look forward to celebratory refreshment with them! The next big event in NSW is the AFL lunch ahead of the Swans v Eagles clash at the SCG.
