The Carbiner For sport and for good fellowship THE OFFICIAL NEWSLETTER OF THE CARBINE CLUB EDITION 4 of 2018 May, 2018 HK- Rugby Sevens ~ from Danny Zigall LONDON- April Newsletter ~from Terry McCaughey SA- AGM ~from John Condon OAM & Robbi Timms NSW Briefs COMING EVENTS The Carbiner is also available on the Club website at www.thecarbineclub.org All contributions to EDITION The Carbiner NUMBER welcomed 20 place Dec your 20, event 2017 & news on the record! Contact Merv Hill at carbiner@netspace.net.au CARBINE CLUB OF HONG KONG Rugby Sevens On Friday April 6th The Carbine Club of Hong Kong held the annual Rugby Sevens Luncheon at the Hong Kong Football Club. It kicked off at 12:00 noon for drinks with luncheon served at 12:45pm. There were about 520 members and invited guests in attendance. In the audience, we were honoured to have former Springboks Mornay du Plessis and Jean de Villiers, as well as Andy Hall, Andy Nicol, Peter Wheeler, Lawrence Dallagio, and Ieuan Evans, all former Lions players. (Who else was at the lunch?) (Pic at left: Austin Knight, President John Ridley & Robert Jones) As usual the luncheon was started off robustly by our silver-tongued Master of Ceremonies Murray Burton who once again prepped the guests for what would again be a terrific luncheon. Murray then proceeded to introduce our President of the Carbine Club of Hong Kong, Mr. John Ridley, who welcomed all Members and guests. This was John s last event as President of the Club. Murray then introduced John Smit who retired from international rugby as the most-capped Springbok of all time with 111 Test caps. John led the South African team to victory at the 2007 Rugby World Cup. John proposed The Toast to Rugby. (What memorable topic did he mention?) 1

Murray then introduced the colourful Robert Jones, the former Welsh international, and British and Irish Lion. An outstanding player in his teens, he represented Swansea RFC whilst still at school, and had 54 caps for Wales. Robert then regaled us at length with stories of the Lions victorious tour of Australia in 1989, and his memorable confrontations with his opposite number for the Wallabies, Nick Farr-Jones. He emphasized his many lifelong friendships that have been forged through rugby since that tour, saying that contrary perhaps to popular expectation, many of his best mates were English! Members and Guests were then entertained by the hilarious Austin Knight who hails from Manchester. The lunch raised about HK$ 220,000 in donations for The Hong Kong Football Charitable Trust. CARBINE CLUB OF LONDON Terry McCaughey, Member Communications for the Carbine Club, London recently issued their April, 2018 Newsletter with a full update of all the activities of the Club. A full copy of Terry s comprehensive newsletter has been provided to each Club Secretary contact carbiner@netspace.net.au or your Club Secretary if you would like to receive a copy of the London newsletter. In yet another accolade, long serving Secretary John Condon OAM was granted well deserved Life Membership status; Bob Farnham was presented with his 25 year Membership Medallion, and the efforts of Peter Lewis, a former President, were acknowledged. Peter has been a member for 22 years and has served on the Committee for ten of those years making a valued contribution. 3 Left- Nick Chigwidden & Peter Lewis, Above Nick & Bob Farnham

NSW Briefs CCNSW member Peter Kerr AM was recently acknowledged by the NSW Olympic Council with an Order of Merit award which was presented at their AGM in April. The NSWOC Order of Merit is presented to individuals who have achieved remarkable merit in the sporting world, either through personal achievement or contribution to the development of sport with no more than two awards given in any one year. A long term member of the Carbine Club in NSW, Peter has given extensive service on the committee including as President and he is a regular welcome visitor to other clubs. Peter and his wife Janine are heading to PNG for the Congress next week where his many Carbine friends look forward to celebratory refreshment with them! The next big event in NSW is the AFL lunch ahead of the Swans v Eagles clash at the SCG. Hard working Event Coordinator Victoria Ramirez tells us that already over 400 bookings have been received for the lunch on 14 June which features iconic broadcaster Dennis Cometti. 4
