North Clackamas Sunrise Rotary meeting of 9/5/2014 Reporter: Margaret Inspiration: Mitch Wall Guests: Josefina (our inbound from Argentina), Taylor Pruitt, Ron Hanson (Clackamas club), Aaron (our outbound for 2015) and Darrell Hall (Mary Hall s dad and host dad to Josefina). Announcements: Rae: Smoke alarm installation is scheduled for Saturday, October 4 th at 9:00. Sign-up sheet passed around. Dodie: She is aiming for 95% attendance for the club s goal this year. Please get make-ups to her by Wednesday. Terry: The golf tournament is September 15 th and there s a golf committee meeting this afternoon at 5:00 at California Pizza Kitchen. If there s any info you want to share, please get it to Steve or Wayne by 5:00 this afternoon. We need more players and there s some interest from single players from other clubs that we may be able to match up with single players from our club. Need to firm up tee sponsors. Please email Fred with those. Remember this is our most important fundraiser. Wayne: We are looking at alternate sites and dates for the Fireside as he and Renee were never really able to connect the folks at Eagle s Landing. He s really appreciating all that Shelly did in the past to help put this together. Al: Dictionary delivery day will be October 17 th and will launch after our meeting at Rex Putnam that morning. Margaret will be passing around a sign-up sheet next week. Todd: The wood cut is scheduled for September 27 th at the Milwaukie Center. Al: Next Wednesday there is a board meeting usual time and place. A reminder that the District Governor will be at our meeting next week. There will be about a 30 minute board meeting following next week s meeting. Drawing: $246 Dave F. had winning ticket but did not win the pot. Boasts & Toasts: Todd: School has started and everyone s excited about new clothes, new shoes, etc.. He went to the coast with his family over the weekend. The weather was great and they were able to have dinner with some friends. Mary Hall s family and Josefina went with them. There was, however, a huge fly infestation at the beach and the flies literally covered your clothing as well as being in the cars. They were able to observe whales at the Devil s Punchbowl. Shelly: She was feeling a little sad the first day of school when she realized that this will be the last year she will be getting a kid off to school in the morning. (Terry reminded her that they do come back). Mitch: LaSalle opened this week. He and Marilyn are celebrating 37 years of marital bliss. He didn t realize how much he and Steve have in common as Altamont was rated 7 th for the most boring place to live in Oregon. Kevin: Soccer games all weekend. Dan: It s been a long time since he s been to a meeting not by intent, but schedule. Today is the first day of football season for him and his new commissioner is blessing him by letting

him ref the Central Catholic/Jesuit game this evening. Will: Has been dealing with an annoying woodpecker and after his wife told him he could not shoot it with a.22 in Happy Valley, they contacted a pest control company. Now he as a mechanical spider tied to a motion detector that drops down whenever he shows his face. It s working. Andy: Scheduling commissioner isn t being as kind to him as he is to Dan since Canby has a game in Roseburg today. Wayne: Looking forward to an incredible game this weekend. There should be close to 30 people at our tailgate, including Dave L., Ray and T. Mohr. Go Ducks! Terry: To Shelly they do come back. His daughter is home from San Francisco this week. He thought since she is now a Rotarian, she would want to come to our meeting this morning. Her response was it s too early and you don t serve wine. She s home to attend two weddings. He got a call around midnight after one the weddings to pick her up in Tualatin even though she said she d be able to get a ride home. She was feeling pretty good. Apparently, the groom is a bourbon fan and the punch was more bourbon than punch. She decided to confess all of her Rex Putnam sins and Terry wondered about sending her there to school! Chris: Nathan has a schedule conflict with the car was at Rite Aid on Saturday for his cross country team, so Chris will be there washing cars without him. Dave Lay: Heading to Europe next week for three weeks. Alisha: She sympathized with Shelly since this is the last first day of school she would be able to take a picture of her boys heading to school on the same day. Mary: Her apology to our speaker that she would need to leave early. Flower mishap for a funeral today and the flowers were still at Fed Ex. Dodie: One of her clients talked her in to skydiving on the 27 th! Rae: A young client is getting married today so she will be going to a wedding. Elaine: Will should have spoken with Eric before he called out the pest control people for the woodpecker. They went to the state fair on Monday. It was an interesting experience and everything costs too much money. Her kids would not let her take a picture of them on their first day of school. Ray: About this time last week he was sitting on a boat fishing on the Columbia River near Astoria. Remarkable outing. They were limited to two fish per fisherman, with only one chinook. Problem is that most of the fish passing through were chinook. He now has 15-20 pounds of filet in his freezer. Al: He and Ellen were supposed to meet their oldest daughter at Smith Rock to camp. Problem is that he hates camping and the camping gear they have is about 45 years old. Solution they sat around the campfire then proceeded back to their hotel.

Program Free Geek Darren Heiber Speaker: Darren Heiber, Director of Public Services for Free Geek, a 501 (c)3 nonprofit. Free Geek was founded in 2000 by 3-4 geeks who got together and worked on rebuilding/constructing computers. After getting bored with their own stuff, they reached out to nonprofits and began a business of recycling old electronics/computers of all sorts and rebuilding them and distributing them to schools, etc. Darren explained that E waste contributes about 5-7 percent to landfills, but because of the toxicity of components presents a major problem for polluting the soil and groundwater. His nonprofit specializes in ethical environmental recycling. Free Geek trains volunteers in rebuilding computers, etc. which in turn are donated or sold through their thrift store at very reduced prices as a way of giving back to the community. They also offer about 25 different technology classes to the public free of charge. Brochures attached. Next week --- Greeter: Alisha Inspiration: Eric Speaker: District Governor, Doug Taylor. Thanks to Dave for setting up the room. Thanks to Mitch for his nice inspiration. Al is always inspired by Mitch s presence. Will led the 4-Way Test. Have a great week!
