The OrderBoard Newsletter of The Calgary Model Railway Society Table of Contents Annual General Meeting Fall MiniMeet Showcasing Dioramas Coming Events Pulling up the rails on the Drumheller sub. Photo by Gord Smith Report from the Annual General Meeting The Annual General Meeting of the Calgary Model Railway Society was held on October 19, 2014. There were numerous reports presented from the Board of Directors. Of note, the budget for the coming year was reviewed and approved by the membership. Also, a motion to amend the society bylaws to allow the president to be appointed for more than one consecutive term was voted on and approved by the membership....continued on next page WWW.CALGARYMODELRAILWAY.CA Page 1

AGM Report Continued... One of the club representative's terms was up for renewal, the current incumbent, John Lund for CanTrak, had agreed to run again. During the meeting, this position was ratified by the membership. Also, two of the independent director's terms came to an end. The two incumbents, Rick Walker and Daniel Charest, agreed to run again for another term. There was some discussion of other clubs that wish to have representation on the Board. This issue will be need to be addressed by the new Board. This leaves the composition of the Board unchanged from last year with the exception of the President. Daniel Charest has taken on the role of SUPERTRAIN chairman for this coming year and will not be president. The Board has yet to meet to appoint (railroad?) a new president, which explains why there is no President's report in this issue of the OrderBoard. Editor Julia Harrison mans (womans?) the CMRS booth and harasses passersby at Railway Days. CMRS had a booth at Railway Days to promote SUPERTRAIN and the Society. Slide Night This newsletter may or may not be out before Slide Night! In any case, this is a reminder that it is being held, (or was held and you missed it!) on Friday, Nov. 7 at River Park Community Church, 3818 14A Street SW, at 7:30 PM. Ph.403-335-2890 http://selkirkleaf.com/ Email: Selkirkleaf1@yahoo.ca REPORT ON THE FALL MINIMEET The Fall minimeet was very well attended, and five excellent clinics were presented. I thank Brian Keay, Gord Sherret, Alan Hough, David Bedard and Doug Lee for the work and thought put into their clinics, and for their excellent presentations. I think we probably set records for participation there were more than 70 attending clinics in the morning, and 50 in the afternoon. Brian s and Doug s presentations have been posted to the CMRS website. I would love to see more entries in the Show and Tell, and I remind members that the Peter Bouma challenge will run again in the Spring. If you did not collect either a 5 inch square or a 4x6 rectangle, let me know I have some spares, or make your own. Bring your mini-module to the Spring minimeet you ll be entered in the draw for a $100 gift certificate. We would like to present the modules at SUPERTRAIN again this year, see the information later in this newsletter. MINIMEET CLINICS POSTED TO CMRS WEBSITE Roger Walker Two of the clinics given at the Fall Minimeet have now been posted to the CMRS website. The first is Brian Keay s clinic on reading Canadian prototype railroad signals. The subject at first seems complicated, but Brian s handout says it all. Read the presentation and you ll soon be reading the signals as easily as the train crews. The second is Doug Lee s presentation on layout design. Doug s handout was incomplete, but the version on the web is complete. The error was mine, not Doug s. I took the material to the printer, who printed, collated and stapled it. I did not check the finished product, which was missing a page. My apologies to Doug enjoy the presentation on the website. Roger Walker NMRA Convention Clinics One of our members has noted that many of the Clinics from the NMRA convention are still available on the convention website. Search for NMRA Convention 2014 Clinics. There are also some interesting videos on the site. WWW.CALGARYMODELRAILWAY.CA Page 3

CMT Is On the Move in 2015 The inevitable has finally arrived!! Last month, The Calgary Model Trainmen s Club received our notice that our premises have to be vacated by August 31, 2015. We have known this day was coming but now it is here. So we still have close to a year until the sad day. At the moment, while we have some ideas, we do not know where we will be moving to. Stay tuned in the Orderboard or on our Web site as our plans come together. There will be an Open House at CMT in November. See below for information. We are hoping to have the Club open again for our Farewell to Victoria Park Open House, tentatively at the end of April 2015 following SUPERTRAIN. Note this plan is still tentative. After that, there is a lot to do to dismantle the layout and salvage what we can prior to the end of August. We do hope our many friends in Calgary will visit CMT one more time. And if you know of some vacant inexpensive premises (basements can work), we would be most happy to hear from you!! CMT Fall Open House Brookes Harrow The Calgary Model Trainmen s Club invites everyone to an Open House on: Saturday November 15th, 2014 Times will be from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm This will likely be one of the last times the Club will be open for viewing. Come and see The Chinook Western Railway our freelance railroad travelling southwest from Calgary through Kananaskis to connect with US railroads at Elkford. We have made some changes and improvements to the layout over the last year. Visitors are most welcome to bring your HO-gauge locomotives and rolling stock, if equipped to run on DCC, to run on the layout. The club is located at 619 12 Avenue SE, just north of the Stampede grounds. Parking is available on the east side of the building or on the street near the building. Admission is by donation. We look forward to seeing everyone. If you can t make it on November 15th, visitors are invited the visit the Club most Wednesday evenings (unless the Flames are playing at home) after 7:00 pm. New members are welcome. For more details and a map, please visit our Web site, www.calgarymodeltrainmen.ca. We look forward to seeing everyone at CMT. CMT Annual Fleamarket 2015 What, the Fleamarket is not until next March? True. But s never too early to start thinking about The Calgary Model Trainmen s Club Annual Fleamarket. To book a table, please contact me at bharrow@nucleus.com or call 403-201-4937. Brookes Harrow Hanna Roundhouse Society Hello, I m a member of the Hanna Roundhouse Society and while we re not a model railway club, we do have what is believed to be the only intact roundhouse and turntable in western Canada. While our building is mostly structurally sound it is in need of some major work. To help with the fund raising we ve produced a limited edition First Day Cover featuring our wonderful building. We were hoping some of your members might be interested as either stamp collectors or railway buffs. We do have a facebook page, Hanna Roundhouse Society, with a lot of pictures of our 1913 CNoR Roundhouse, boiler room and turntable. I ve attached a picture of what our F.D.C. looks like. We re selling them for $5.00 plus $2.50 S&H. If you have any questions please contact me at mtyers@telusplanet.net Thank you very much Maureen Tyers Hanna Roundhouse Society WWW.CALGARYMODELRAILWAY.CA Page 7

Showcasing (small) dioramas at Supertrain 2015 With just about half a year away and the Fall Minimeet behind us, now is the time to start to think of what to share and show to the general public. Supertrain, staged by our members, is the place for us to show what model railroading is all about. Big or small, let s show it all! This year we ll have more space than ever. This is an invite to all CMRS members to take part in our booth and hopefully inspire a few of you to finish a diorama of some sort, including some structures and landscape details. These may be free standing, or meant to be eventually included in a home or club layout. Any size and scale is welcome, in between a simple 5x5 P.B. mini diorama to the biggest of them all, a switching layout or a standard module. Should you be in the process of modelling one of those fabulous craftsman kits we would like to help you to exhibit it. Or, if you have invested the time and effort to kitbash or to build something from scratch, may it be a model of the real thing (often rolling stock) or a freelance, fictional railside diorama, don t hesitate to ask us for a spot at our booth. An advantage to participating in our booth is that we share the time required to man it, giving you time to roam the show floor or volunteer with the organization and still be able to show off your model. When you prefer to hang out at the booth, there is ample time to interact with visitors to discuss details of your model. A few years of experience has given us the idea of how to protect your model from sticky fingers and allow serious on-lookers to inspect the detail up close. Mounting them on risers, up to a couple of feet from the table top, allows you to add a short story card, photographs and other information. Remember, there is no cost to your participation. However, it helps us if you write me an email once you plan to possibly have something ready. Helps me to apply for space, early. I also welcome suggestions and comments. We hope to see lots of 5X5 or 4X6 squares built for the mini-meet and SUPERTRAIN.
