Information Concerning the Tohoku District/Pacific Coast Earthquake Throughout Japan, the effects of the March 11, 2011 earthquake are severe and ongoing. We urge that Japanese nationals in California/Nevada as well as American visitors to Japan exercise great caution in their plans and remain up-to-date with the latest developments. Please make use of the following information that has been drawn from the Prime Minister s Office and various other sources. The Government of Japan and affected local government units are engaged in ongoing information-gathering (Prime Minister s Office: http://www.kantei.go.jp/foreign/topics/2011/earthquake2011tohoku.html). On behalf of the people of Japan, the Consulate General of Japan in San Francisco is enormously grateful for the many communications of concern and support we have received thus far. I. I. Statement by Consul General Hiroshi Inomata 2011 Tohoku District/Pacific Coast Earthquake Statement by Consul General Hiroshi Inomata I would like to express my profound gratitude for all the communications that the Consulate General has been receiving that express concern and sympathy for those affected by the earthquake. Early reports are that the Tohoku District/Pacific Ocean earthquake is of historic magnitude. While injuries and damages are currently being further assessed, they are quite severe and the effects are ongoing. The Consulate is working diligently to respond to the many communications from concerned parties spanning from the many Japanese nationals and visitors present in California, to Americans with friends and family in the affected regions, to friends of Japan. The Consulate has set up a special operations room to receive inquiries or communications concerning the earthquake. The contact numbers are as follows: Weekdays - business hours only: General: (415) 356-2486 Media inquiries: (415) 356-2487 After business hours and weekend: (415) 777-3533 Regarding donations and assistance, please e-mail sa2cg@cgjsf.org. Attached is a list of current online resources for important updates. As there are reports of difficulties in contacting individuals in Japan by telephone, Japan s telephone carriers have established an emergency message board system, whereby a telephone user in Japan can upload a message concerning his/her safety which can then be looked up online based on the user s telephone number. The United States Department of State has listed resources for concerns regarding the safety of American nationals in Japan. The outpouring of inquiries sends a strong signal of friendship and is further proof of how closely California and Japan are intertwined. Once again, thank you for your concern and compassion. We will keep the public posted about further developments.
