Conquering Heroes: From Joan of Arc to Eisenhower Normandy to Paris Aboard AmaLyra June 4 13, 2019

Dear Brooklyn College Alumni & Friends, One of the defining experiences of college life is the community of learning and exploration that enriches the path to earning a degree. Next year, we hope to offer you new journeys of discovery and fellowship with the launch of a new travel program for Brooklyn College alumni and friends. I hope you will join me in June 2019 for our inaugural trip, on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of D-Day, to discover history and culture both recent and ancient. Aboard the stately AmaLyra, we will cruise the Seine from Normandy to Paris, tracing the route of the Allied Forces as they moved to liberate northwestern France. We will also have opportunities to visit historic sites dating back to William the Conqueror, Richard the Lionheart, and Joan of Arc. Throughout the voyage, onboard lectures by experts on history, art, and architecture will further enrich our experience. We will also be joined by travelers from the alumni associations of Harvard University and Johns Hopkins, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Royal Oak Foundation, and the National Trust for Historic Preservation. Our trip begins in time for special commemorative ceremonies marking the anniversary of D-Day on June 6 at Omaha Beach or Caen before boarding our vessel. Along our river route, we will discover the ruins of a château commissioned by Richard the Lionheart in the late 12th century, and visit a private Arts and Crafts-style estate, ancient monasteries, and the medieval city of Rouen, home to the state-of-the-art Joan of Arc Historial. In Giverny, we will explore the Impressionist movement at the home and garden of Claude Monet and the Museum of Impressionisms. You will also have options to visit other important sites including Compiègne, Chantilly, or Auvers-sur-Oise. Upon arrival in Paris, you may choose to learn more about military history at the impressive Army Museum, delve deeper into Impressionism on an exclusive guided tour of the Musée de l Orangérie, which houses Monet s Water Lilies, or explore the state of Franco-American relations at a meeting with a representative from the U.S. Embassy. This promises to be a fascinating voyage to inaugurate Brooklyn College s travel program, and I hope you will join me to commemorate this historic D-Day anniversary. Sincerely, Todd Michael Galitz Vice President for Institutional Advancement, Brooklyn College P.S. For those who would like to extend their stay in France, an optional prelude in Normandy and an optional postlude in Versailles are offered. COMMEMORATE the 75th anniversary of D-Day with visits to landing beaches and the Caen Memorial Museum VISIT a private Arts and Crafts-style home on the northern coast of France, overlooking the Atlantic HIGHLIGHTS STROLL in Monet s lush and lovely gardens at Giverny SEE the World War I and II sites in Compiègne or follow in the footsteps of America s Founding Fathers who visited the Château de Chantilly to admire its gardens and collections EXPLORE sites related to other iconic historical figures such as William the Conqueror, Richard the Lionheart, and Joan of Arc ATTEND a panel discussion with journalists and a meeting on Franco-American relations with a U.S. diplomat

Gather at the hotel this evening for introductory remarks and a welcome reception. R THURSDAY, JUNE 6: DEAUVILLE / CONFLANS On this 75th anniversary of the Allied invasion, travel to Pointe du Hoc, where U.S. Army Rangers scaled 100-foothigh cliffs to silence the German guns that threatened the D-Day operation. Continue to Omaha Beach to attend the commemoration ceremony at the American Military Cemetery. Alternatively, visit Caen and the Memorial Museum, which chronicles the lead-up to and consequences of World War II. Continue to the Abbaye aux Hommes, where the city s inhabitants found refuge during the Normandy landings. The abbey s St. Etienne Church is also the burial place of William the Conqueror. Drive to Conflans to board AmaLyra in the early evening. FRIDAY, JUNE 7: LES ANDELYS During a relaxed morning, attend a lecture related to World War II. Arrive this afternoon in Les Andelys to discover the hilltop ruins of Château Gaillard, commissioned by Richard the Lionheart in the 11th century. A more active option will also be offered. SATURDAY, JUNE 8: CAUDEBEC-EN-CAUX Depart for Varengeville-sur-Mer to visit a private estate, Les Bois des Moutiers, where we are invited for a light lunch. This Arts and Crafts house, designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens, sustained significant damage during the war and has since been lovingly restored. Return to AmaLyra for lunch. Attend an onboard lecture as we cruise the Seine River. SUNDAY, JUNE 9: ROUEN Today discover the medieval city of Rouen on a walking tour. See the cathedral, a masterpiece of High Gothic architecture and a favorite subject of Monet, and the Place de Vieux Marché, to visit the Joan of Arc Historial. You may wish to dine ashore this evening or remain on the ship. MONDAY, JUNE 10: VERNON Depart from the town of Vernon for Giverny and Claude Monet's home, which remains largely unchanged since 1926. See the colorful gardens that were an inspiration for many of his paintings. We will also visit the nearby Museum Château Gaillard AmaLyra

of Impressionisms, which explores this important artistic movement and its legacy. A lecture will be offered as we cruise to Conflans during the afternoon. TUESDAY, JUNE 11: CONFLANS Today excursions will be offered to Compiègne, Chantilly, or Auvers-sur-Oise. In Compiègne, visit the site where the armistice was signed to end World War I. Years later, in 1940, the French signed a truce with the Germans in the same place. We will also see the memorial at a former WWII-era internment camp. Alternatively, discover the Château de Chantilly, where some of the Founding Fathers were received by the Prince de Condé. Enjoy a tour that includes the 17th-century formal gardens by Le Nôtre, the impressive library, and masterpieces by Raphael, Poussin, and Corot. Or follow in the footsteps of Vincent van Gogh and other painters in charming Auvers-sur-Oise. Attend the captain s gala dinner tonight. WEDNESDAY, JUNE 12: PARIS Following a relaxing morning cruise, arrive in Paris at lunchtime. At the golden-domed Hôtel des Invalides, visit the Army Museum, with its impressive collection of photographs, uniforms, weapons, and documents related to the First and Second World Wars. For art lovers, another option will be a special guided tour of the Musée de l Orangérie, which houses masterpieces by Monet and his contemporaries. Or meet with a representative from the U.S. Embassy to discuss Franco-American relations, past and present. You may wish to dine ashore in Paris this evening.
