BALKANS SUMMER UNIVERSITY in partnership with University St Kliment Ohridski, Faculty of Tourism and Hospitality ENVIRONMENT AND ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT REPORT OF THE SESSION Ohrid () September 10 to 17, 2018

- 1 - The Balkans Summer University took place for the first time in Ohrid () from September 10 to 16 with the collaboration of the Faculty of Tourism and Hospitality, University St Kliment Ohridski. The Faculty of Tourism is located in a very convenient location, in front of the Lake of Ohrid and very close to the historic town of Ohrid. The foreign students were accommodated in apartments and in a small hotel. The two places were very close to the University. All the students appreciated the comfort and the clean spaces that both apartments and hotel had offered them. Breakfast and lunch was organised each day in the cafeteria of the university for the whole group. The kitchen staff of the Faculty of Tourism was very concerned about the satisfaction of our group The academic program intended to develop a lot of topics regarding some aspects of sustainable development and tourism as a contribution of the economy growth. The Academic sessions contained approximately 30 hours of lectures, discussions and debates. They were conducted in English by international experts from and from abroad. About 20 candidates took part in the program, selected either by CIFE or by the n partner, representing 8 different nationalities. The entire group enjoyed a rich program of additional activities that allowed them to appreciate the culture and gastronomy of this country. A full day excursion was organized on the Lake Ohrid to the Monastery Saint-Naum. A private boat had been rented only for our group. Our personal guide proposed many stops along the coast and allowed us to visit very interesting sites, unknown by the public and some of them accessible only by boat. During the tour, our guide gave interesting information about the places, for the great pleasure of the group. All the candidates who completed the program successfully received a certificate of participation. Additionally, students who presented some more work after the session acquired ECTS Credits. We also asked our students at the end of the session to fill out the evaluation questionnaire and comment upon our programme. Their observations, which can be found further on in this report have been of a great value for us. We hope that the session in will be a very nice memory for everyone and we warmly thank our partner, the Faculty of Tourism and Hospitality, for trusting CIFE for this first collaboration which we hope will continue in the future.

- 10 EVALUATION This program, organised in Ohrid for the first time in collaboration with the Faculty of Tourism and Hospitality (University St Kliment Ohridski) was very appreciated. The examination of the evaluation forms have proved a large satisfaction. The location for accommodation, in front of the Lake of Ohrid and very close to the historic town of Ohrid was really ideal. Everything was easy to reach with less than 5 mn walking. The Faculty was in the same area too, close to the lake, to the old town and to the apartments so the logistic was very appreciated. The candidates were very surprised to be accommodated in such a place, i.e. in apartments for the majority and hotel for the others. The owner proposed very cleaned apartments, comfortable and with a large space so this choice was highly appreciated. Breakfast and lunch was organised in the cafeteria of the university so that even candidates who lived in apartments didn t have to take care of their own breakfast. The lecturers, were accommodated in hotel Rimaro, very comfortable and very close too. Evaluation of the lecturers The global evaluation of the students regarding the lecturers gave a very good result. Some were judged "at the top", (i.e. Captain Bartol from OTAN office in Skopje who was very appreciated). For a small number of them, some students indicated monotonous presentations (maybe because of the language). Evaluation of the program The choice of the different topics was good and for the majority of the group, all the topics were relevant and presented in a very interesting and proper way. Most of the students made many positive comments about the team of lecturers. We can note a special appreciation for our guide Kliment, who has escorted us during all the tours, the old town and the full day excursion. He was judged as an excellent guide, with a perfect knowledge of the region and very good level of English. The majority of the candidates were very satisfied. They all noticed a very large satisfaction about relations with the staff and the good balance between courses and leisure time. Free time was left each evening to allow everyone to discover the wonderful area around the lake, and a tasting gastronomy. The major complain was about the participation (or non participation) of the local candidates, during the academic session but during the extra activities too. This situation probably is the fact of a very different teaching method. While foreign candidates did not hesitate to speak out during classes and trid to develop a debate, local candidates seemed not to be used to such behaviour towards teachers. They were very attentive, but did not allow themselves to ask questions The general opinion was that the opportunity of an academic program and experience of living together with so many representatives of other nationalities benefit each and everybody in the future. CONCLUSION CIFE warmly thanks the Faculty of Tourism and Hospitality for its collaboration in the organisation of this first summer school and hopes that this program will continue in the future.
