For immediate release 10 th of October 2018 Open Letter to all Victorian Political Parties calling for Container Deposit Scheme Today, an Open Letter was sent to all Victorian political party leaders seeking a promise to introduce a 10 cents refund scheme for drink containers in the next term of parliament. The letter was signed by 80 local, state and national groups and businesses, representing 100,000 Victorians. Victoria is the last mainland state to commit to this scheme, which is proven to significantly decrease litter, increases recycling and is estimated to provide a fundraising boost of $50 million to Victorian community and charity groups each year. It s about time we did this in Victoria. During the recent Spring Clean the City event, we collected close to 7,000 litres of litter and a whooping third of it was containers! If they were worth 10 cents each, we simply would not see them littered. We have a serious container litter problem in Victoria and this is the most effective solution that brings massive social benefits to boot, said Dr. Annett Finger from the Boomerang Alliance. In the latest poll, 84% of Victorians were in favour of a container deposit scheme. We will publish a score card with the responses from the leaders of all parties in early November, so Victorians can decide if they d like less litter, better recycling and $50 million per year more for charities. END. For more information contact: Dr. Annett Finger, Boomerang Alliance, 0404 830 011, Annett.Finger@boomerangalliance.org.au

Dear Party leaders, We, the undersigned, are calling on you to include the support for a Container Deposit Scheme in your policies for the State election scheduled for the 24th of November 2018. Specifically, we ask that you make a commitment to introduce a Container Deposit Scheme in Victoria, in the next Term of Parliament. A Container Deposit Scheme in Victoria will slash container litter rates, promote recycling, create more employment and provide vital funds to community organisations interested in collecting cans and bottles. Yours sincerely, 80 undersigned organisations, representing ~100,000 of Victorians.
