BAC AUGUST GENERAL MEETING Our guest speaker was Sarah O Brien, Bastrop s Main Street Program Director. Sarah has only been in Bastrop since taking the position in early April, but along with other ideas to keep Main Street a happening place, Sarah jumped right in to help with our Veteran s Day Car Show. According to the car show committee members, Sarah has been a pleasure to work with and is as excited about the show as we are. Glad you are here, Sarah. Mike Blake volunteered to give us a bit of his and wife Deanna s background. Deanna is currently a neonatal nurse, and Mike, having spent his career in law enforcement, has retired from his job as Bastrop Chief of Police. The Blakes have been BAC members since September 2015, and are the owners of a 63 Corvette coupe. Everyone was up on their feet to play Last Man Standing. The remaining standees were Russ Richards, and Lisa and Kirk Smith. When it came to the tie-breaker, the Smiths remained. Don t forget to get your prize at the September meeting.
THE AUGUST SOCIAL The site for the August social was The Yard at Neighbor s in The Crossing downtown. Thirty-one of our members braved the weather, which, fortunately had let up long enough to get to the restaurant and enjoy a night out with friends. Our next gathering will be at Schlotzsky s in Bastrop on Wednesday, September 21. Schlotzsky s has once again donated lots of items totaling around $1700 for the 2016 Veteran s Day Car Show. Let s show our appreciation by enjoying their great sandwiches, pizza, salads, and pasta at their Bastrop location. See you there! So I asked Nancy to take this picture She said, wait...all I see is me! (Psst...turn it around, Nancy.) Ohhh.
DRIPPING IN DRIPPING SPRINGS Four intrepid BAC members piled into Bill and Mary Szelag s 1970 Old Cutlass convertible on the morning of Saturday, August 20, to attend the Hill Country Rally for Kids Car Show. It was not a day to put the top down as shortly after arriving it began to drip in Dripping Springs. About a few over 100 cars were there, and of course, we passed out our car show flyers and observed how they ran their show for any possible ideas. They were very friendly, and overall it was a pretty nicely run show on Mercer Street in Dripping Springs, a somewhat similar setting as our show, but not nearly the number of businesses we have in Bastrop. We didn t stay past 11:30, so did not see the awards, but still had a great 1/2 day of bonding and promoting our show in November. Getting those flyers out Bruce Mungiguerra, Jeff Kirk, Roland Damari, and Bill Szelag.
THIS AND THAT Some of you BAC old-timers will remember Les Mott, an original founding member of this club. Sadly, Les passed away on Wednesday, August 24 from cancer. A memorial service was held at Buescher State Park on Sunday, August 28. Our sympathy to Les friends and family. CAR SHOW NEWS: Raffle tickets will be on sale in the lobby at the main location of First National Bank on Friday, September 2 from 10-3. Pam Whittaker and Jeanette Beegle will be doing the selling that day, but welcome anyone who would like to help. In addition, if you know of any locations that would allow the sale of the tickets, please notify Pam or Jeanette. Remember what the proceeds of the sales go to OPERATION FINALLY HOME. If you need more tickets to sell on your own, see Pam or Jeanette at the general meeting Thursday night. The next car show meeting will be on Tuesday, September 27 at 6:00 at the Comfort Inn. All members are welcome. The show is coming up fast and it looks to be better than ever. At the car show meeting, Dave and Bruce listen as Jeanette holds up the Operation Finally Home banner to be displayed at the show. Steve Dewire sent this from Tokyo. He called it cruisin on a Saturday night. Beautiful American car, and it looks like the driver adopted that curious American fashion statement hat on backwards. I can think of a few people who can relate to this photo.
