HOLIDAY HIGHLIGHTS Wild Northumberland and Scottish border country The holy island of Lindisfarne Abbeys, castles and hill forts along the way

NORTHUMBERLAND EXPERIENCE COAST, CASTLES & GARDENS Here is a chance to spend four days exploring the northeast's spectacular wild countryside and rich heritage on a series of walks with opportunities to visit sites of interest along the way. We will include walks taking in rugged coastal paths, golden sands and the dramatic ancient castles of Lindisfarne, Bamburgh and Dunstanburgh. Inland there are remarkable gardens at Alnwick Castle, and Cragside which you will visit. There is also the wilderness of the Cheviots and the Northumberland National Park to discover, with a taster taking in some of the best of St Cuthbert's Way. This cross-border route links the two landmarks perhaps most associated with the iconic religious figure, Melrose Abbey in the Scottish borders and the Holy Island of Lindisfarne. The region is staggeringly beautiful and is excitingly varied from the rugged terrain of the Cheviot Hills to the wide sandy beaches of the Northumberland coast. This holiday incorporates a good mixture of varied walking together with sightseeing each day. Your programme will include a visit to Chillingham Castle, an ancient fortress where you will see active restoration of complex masonry, metalwork and ornamental plaster as the restoration continues. There is the parkland, gardens and castles available to see. You will also visit the National Trust property of Cragside and enjoy the magnificent Victorian house, gardens and woodland. All transport necessary to and from the walks Entrance fees to Alnwick Castle and Gardens, Cragside and Chillingham Castle Price based on sharing a standard twin room. HOLIDAY GRADE This Grade 4 moderate holiday includes full and half day walks at a moderate pace over hilly terrain and is likely to include an element of sightseeing as well. Half day walking will probably include about 3 hours of walking, with full days having around 5 hours. Expect ascents and descents of up to about 600m. See the Walks & Excursions section for more information. Sightseeing The sightseeing element of the holiday will be significant allowing you to get a good feel for the sites and sights as well as the trails of the destination. In flight meals, if appropriate, will be advised in your final travel documents Day: 1 - Wooler (D) Independent arrival at The Tankerville Arms Hotel in Wooler. Check in is from 2pm. Dinner will be taken at the hotel each evening. Day: 6 - - (B) Depart The Tankerville Arms Hotel by 11am. Walks & Excursions Northumberland is a haven for walkers with our hotel ideally located right on the edge of the Northumberland National Park. There is ample opportunity to explore a great variety of walking from hill country to the coast. The programme may include a selection of walks and sightseeing days out from the following, which give an indication of the nature of the walking terrain and the format of the holiday; East Horton to Fenwick. Part of the St. Cuthbert's Way from which the pilgrims first glimpsed Holy Island, followed by a visit to the island. This walk crosses undulating country to the sandstone ridge and St. Cuthbert's Cave. After crossing the ridge it descends through Kyloe Woods to the coastal plain, stopping just before reaching the A1. There are wonderful views of the Cheviots, Glendale, Lindisfarne, Bamburgh Castle and the Farne Islands. About 7½ miles, 140m ascent and 210m descent. Coastal path from Craster to Boulmer. Today we will walk the best part of the Northumberland Coastal path from Craster to Boulmer followed by a sightseeing visit to Alnwick Castle and Gardens. About 5½ miles, 130m ascent and 150m descent. Wooler Common to Hethpool. Arguably the most scenic part of the St. Cuthbert's Way. The path ascends gently and then descends into the beautiful College valley. It is a wonderful walk, great views and much of interest in very tranquil hill country. We then visit the ancient fortress of Chillingham Castle. About 6½ miles, 290m ascent and 320m descent.

Lordenshaw to Cragside. Follow St Oswald's Way for a pleasant walk down to Rothbury and then along the River Coquet to the National Trust property of Cragside, which we will then visit. About 4½ miles, 140m ascent and 260m descent. Optional Excursions A range of local excursions and activities may be available to book in your destination through a local operator. We have no involvement in such activities or excursions which are not run, supervised or controlled in any way by us. Footwear Lightweight waterproof walking boots with a good moulded rubber sole (such as Vibram or similar) and a deep tread which provide ankle support are strongly recommended and may be essential for some walks. If you are an experienced walker with strong ankles a good quality pair of trail or approach shoes may well be suitable for some walks. For purely sightseeing elements of the holiday, you should wear whatever is comfortable for a day out on your feet. Kit List Outdoor activities are always more enjoyable if you are prepared. The following list is a basic guideline that will enhance your experience. Please don't hesitate to contact us with any questions you may have. A basic kit list is likely to include: - Waterproof jacket (Goretex or similar) and trousers - Lightweight, quick drying trousers - Several polo shirts, T-shirts or specialist walking shirts - Fleece jacket - Comfortable walking socks - Warm hat and gloves (if appropriate) - Sun hat, sunglasses, lip salve and high SPF sun block - Swimwear (if appropriate) - Day sack (30 litre capacity) to comfortably carry the kit you'll take out on your days activity - Strong polythene bags to keep the contents of your daypack dry - Water bottle(s) - at least 1 litre capacity - Basic first aid kit (plasters, blister treatment, antiseptic etc) - Insect repellent - Waterproof bag or container and knife for your lunch - Walking/trekking poles (if applicable) Water-to-Go An alternative to bottled water from single-use sealed water bottles is filtered water from a refillable bottle containing its own water filter such as a Water-to-go bottle available from www.watertogo.eu. Just fill up from any water source and save the environment from disposable plastic bottles. We have negotiated an exclusive 15% discount with our partners Water-to-Go for you as a thank you for helping the environment. Please go to their website at www.watertogo.eu and enter the code RWH17 when ordering. In addition, Water-to-Go will match the discount with a donation to our charity, Heart & Sole, which will allow us to continue to make a difference in the countries you visit on our holidays. Trekking Poles Many of our clients find walking poles hugely beneficial when walking. They can both reduce stress on the knees and aid confidence. If you use them please make sure that you have the rubber tips covering the sharp metal points. There is increasing evidence that the bare metal tips are damaging footpaths both in the UK and abroad. You might wish to take a small bottle of antibacterial hand gel with you for times when you're unable to wash your hands. Insurance Although not compulsory for British and EU citizens resident in the UK, we strongly recommend that you take out travel insurance to cover you in the event of eventualities such as unexpected cancellation, accident or illness before your holiday or the loss of personal possessions. Visitors who are not British Citizens (or who are not EU citizens resident in the UK), must be adequately insured to join our holidays and will be unable to participate in our local walking and other activity programmes without being able to demonstrate that you have valid travel insurance. Personal Safety The UK Foreign & Commonwealth Office provides up to date information on security and local laws for travellers, together with current passport and visa information, at www.gov.uk/travelaware. Please take a few minutes to look at the current advice on your planned destination. Please be aware of what's going on around you, take sensible precautions with your credit cards and passport and avoid displays of wealth such as wearing expensive jewellery or watches. Do not carry more cash on you than you will need for each day, and we recommend that a money belt is used. Cultural Awareness Responsible Travel We're committed to ethical tourism in all our destinations. Our holidays are designed for you to discover the essence of the country you are visiting. Travelling in small groups not only gives you an up close and personal experience of your destination, but minimises your impact on the immediate environment. We feel that the most important starting point to protect the environment is to be out in it. For more details visit our website.
