FROM MOSCOW TO THE CASPIAN SEA A luxury river cruise along the Volga aboard the MS Volga Dream 3rd to 15th May 2017

Here is a wonderful opportunity to travel along the main street of Russia, an apt title for the mighty Volga River as she snakes her way from Moscow and through the Russian heartland to the Caspian Sea. Along the way we will encounter the many ethnic peoples of the Central Volga, learn something of their cultures and enjoy the ever changing landscapes of countryside and city, of towns and villages. Pass small hamlets of wooden houses, fabulous kremlins, glorious cathedrals and, in stark contrast, some vast industrial complexes. It is a fascinating time to undertake such a journey, to witness the turning point of economic development in an area which sees few tourists and is very much the motor of the Russian economy. Our river journey will begin in Moscow, Mother Russia s first city and from here our luxurious travelling hotel will transport you through the vast lands of the Tatars to the Gates of the Caspian Sea. Along the way we visit fascinating places such as ancient Nizhni Novgorod and some of the cities of the Golden Ring, Volgograd (Stalingrad) scene of some of the fiercest fighting of the Second World War and ultimately Astrakhan, a former capital of the Tatar Empire which fell to Ivan the Terrible in 1556. Such a trip by any other means than a river vessel would be difficult to comprehend and to add even further to our experience we will be escorted by Professor Ludmilla Selezneva and joined by local guides who will provide much insight in to Russian history and politics. ITINERARY HIGHLIGHTS n Spend time in magnificent Moscow and enjoy visits to the Red Square and the Kremlin with its State Armoury n Participate in an in-depth exploration of Volgograd, where the decisive battle of WWII s eastern front was fought n Witness life along the banks of the Volga River and be enriched by Russia s diverse musical traditions during folklore performances n Visit the world capital of caviar, Astrakhan, and enjoy learning about the history and sampling this famous delicacy Church of St Dmitry on the Blood, Uglich xxxxxxxxxx

Tonight we will be treated by a concert from a local child folk group and experience a traditional Russian dinner with vodka tasting. Day 7 Kazan. As we approach the Republic of Tatarstan, Russian Orthodox Churches no longer dominate the river banks, being instead, replaced by the occasional Muslim mosque, all beautifully adorned and with their own unique character. In the afternoon, we will disembark from the vessel to explore Kazan, the centre of Tatar culture in Russia. Here, we will visit the white-walled Kazan Kremlin where the famous mosque, Kul-Sherif, neighbours the old Peter and Paul Cathedral. Later today we will enjoy a concert by a local Tatar folk group. Enjoy a costumed reception at the Governor s House before reboarding the MS Volga Dream for lunch and sailing on to our next port of call. Day 6 Nizhni Novgorod. Formerly named Gorkiy and once a wealthy commercial centre poised on the trade routes to the East, Nizhni Novgorod became a closed city due to the military activity involved there during the Soviet era.
