Information on Buzzard Mountain Accommodation Discover this wild and spirited retreat, set in thick indigenous bush, with awesome cliffs and incredible views, spectacular sunsets and experience complete solitude, seclusion and peace. There are numerous hiking trails, each offering something different, birding is one of the best with a large variety of raptors and specials to be seen. Botanists, lepidopterists or just the learner will be amazed at the variety of plant, animal and insect life to be seen and found here as Buzzard Mountain also offers over 200 species of tree and plant life which includes Encephalartos Transvenousus. The variety of mammals includes leopards, samango apes, red duikers and bushpigs. This is a venue that GNoR BIG has visited about 4 or 5 times. The property is owned by John and Gail Greaves and extends from the base of the mountain to plateaus at the top. It is an extremely scenic area with great variation in vegetation and habitat. We usually get some unusual Bats at this venue, and if we have a good sized group we can put up more mist nets in varied habitats for diversity. All accommodation is totally secluded and is tailor made for you to relax and feel like you are the only one around. All fridges, stoves and lamps are gas or paraffin fired. There is also a central rock pool for those hot Limpopo days. Access to the main camp is only by your own 4x4 or transport is provided. One has the choice of being taken up to your accommodation by 4x4, or bring your own 4x4, or you can brave the walk to the top. One stone cottage is situated on the mountain-slopes and is accessible by ordinary vehicle. The accommodation is self- catering and all are well fitted-out for such. The two stone cottages (one with 2 bedrooms, and one with 3 bedrooms) can sleep 7 to 9 people. The cottages each have a shower and toilet, open plan kitchen an lounge. One of the cottages has its own splash pool built on the edge of the rock cliff with the most awesome view that go on forever. 2
If you are in the mood to get down to nature, there are three basic wooden cabins and one mud hut that share a communal ablution block that consists of showers and long drop toilets. (These very small,butt will be adequate for our purposes) Camping sites are also available. There is a more luxurious stone cottage situated on the foothills of the mountain. The cottage sleeps 4 people and has its own splash pool and is accessible by ordinary vehicle. You can have the option of bed and breakfast or self-catering. The costs for the accommodation are: 1 X Koo-Boo cottage at bottom of mountain (sleeps 4) - R175.00 per adult per night - R120.00 per child per night 2 X Mountain cottages (sleeps 7-9) Crowned Eagle & Black Eagle - R150.00 per adult per night - R115.00 per child 12 to 16 years per night - R100.00 per child under 12 per night Basic Wooden cabins; (2 sleep 4, 2 sleep 2) - R100.00 per adult per night - R75.00 per child 12 to 16 years per night Camping; - R75.00 per adult per night - R50.00 per child < 12 per night Deposit 50% of stay. There is an entrance fee of R25.00 per adult and R200.00 per child once off Firewood is charged R15 per bundle (but as we braai together we do not use much) Guided Walk is charged approximately R250.00 for the entire group the walk is necessary to visit the Egyptian Fruit Bats in their cave and to enjoy some of the mountain scenery. There are also very pleasant mountain walks. It would be necessary to erect our Flight Tunnel as some of the bats usually caught there probably need more recording. To do this concurrently with mist netting (and Harp Trapping) we will need as much hands on as possible. 3
