Ivan Briukhovetsky Demian Mnohohrishny Ivan Briukhovetsky was a pro Russian hetman of Left Bank Ukraine from 1663 to 1668. Because of cruel domestic policies and their complete failure, a cossack mob killed him by chaining him to a cannon and beating him to death. Demian Mnohohrishny was the Hetman of Left bank Ukraine from 1669 to 1672. His attempts to restore law and order caused other cossacks to denounce him to the Czar, who had him arrested, tortured and exiled to Siberia. Pavlo Teteria Pavlo Teteria was Hetman of Right bank Ukraine (1663 1665). Before his hetmancy he served in a number of high positions under Bohdan Khmelnytsky, and Ivan Vyhovsky. Scythians The Scythians were an ethnolinguistic group of ancient Iranian nomadic tribal cultures living in Scythia, the region encompassing the Pontic Caspian steppe (in Eastern Europe) and parts of Central Asia throughout the Classical Antiquity.
Kiev Oblast Luhansk Oblast Kyiv Oblast has a total area of 28,100 km2 and is located in north central Ukraine. The oblast has a total number of 177 rivers intersecting the region 13 reservoirs, over 2000 ponds, and approximately 750 small lakes. Luhansk Oblast is the easternmost oblast of Ukraine. Its population of 2,461,506 million constitutes 5.13% of the overall Ukrainian population. The Luhansk Oblast rates fifth in Ukraine by the number of its inhabitants. Chernivtsi Oblast Odessa Oblast Chernivtsi Oblast is an oblast in western Ukraine, bordering on Romania and Moldova. It has a large variety of landforms: the Carpathian Mountains and forested plain situated between the Dniester and Prut rivers. As of 2011, one of the poorest regions of Ukraine. Odessa Oblast is the southernmost and largest oblast of south western Ukraine. Its Black Sea coast comprises numerous sandy beaches, estuaries and lagoons. The region's soils are renowned for their fertility. Sumy Oblast Cherkasy Oblast Sumy Oblast is an oblast in the northeastern part of Ukraine. The oblast is rich in picturesque banks of numerous rivers, and sources of mineral waters. Cherkasy Oblast is an oblast of central Ukraine located along the Dnieper River. Cherkasy oblast is the 18th largest oblast of Ukraine, comprising about 3.5% of the area of the country.
Sporting Event Accomplishments Zhanna Pintusevich Block won the gold medal in the women's 100 metres 2001 World Track and Field Championships, Edmonton, Canada. At the XXVII Summer Olympic Games (2000) Sydney, Australia. Ukraine won 2 gold and 2 silver medals in aquatics. Ship Building in Ukraine The 2012 Shipbuilding stamps feature the frigate Sizopol and the brigantine Preseus. Modern Postage 16th World Chess Championship The 16th World Chess Championship finals were held in Moscow, Russia from January 16 24th,. The final matches had the Ukrainian grandmasters Vassily Ivanchuk and Ruslan Ponomariov playing for chess supremacy in an 8 match set. Leonid Hlibov To celebrate the 10th anniversary of modern Ukrainian stamps, a stamp was issued showing an image of the first modern Ukrainian stamp 500 Years of Ukrainian Cossackdom. Leonid Ivanovych Hlibov was a Ukrainian poet, writer, teacher, and civic figure. His most important and notable works are his 107 fables. These are written in the vernacular and satirize contemporary life and conditions using Ukrainian motifs and folklore. Hlibov also wrote riddles for children.
Circus Ukrainian postal authorities issued a miniature sheet of two stamps commemorating the Ukrainian National Circus. The stamps shows a tiger and lion from the performances. Opera Houses This souvenir sheet shows 2 opera house of Ukriane. The first stamp shows the Donetsk National Opera and Ballet Theatre. The second stamp shows the Dnipropetrovsk National Opera and Ballet Theatre.
Red Book Fauna Ukraine Red Book series shows two native endangered species. The first stamp shows the European shag (Phalacrocorax aristotelis). The second stamp shows Porpoise (Phocoena phocoenas). Chernomorskiy Biosphere Reserve Chernomorskiy Biosphere Reserve is situated on the northern coast of the Black Sea about 45 km south west of the city of Kherson. It represents shallow coastal, estuarine and inland wetlands as well as marshes, shallow coastal bays, dune systems, halophytic seaside steppe and forest steppe, which was once common in this region.
WWF Snake The stamps show the Leopard snake (Elaphe situla) from different positions. This snake is native to the various European countries of Albania, Bulgaria, Greece, Italy, Malta, Yugoslavia, Turkey, Ukraine. It is readily identifiable by its reddish, dark edged marking. Palm Sunday Mykola Leontovych In Ukraine, Willow branches are used instead of Palm on Palm Sunday. The stamp shows the arms of a young girl holding willow branches. In the middle, there is a church signifying the reli gious context of this custom. Mykola Leontovych was a Ukrainian composer, choral conductor, priest, and teach er of international renown. "Shchedryk" is the com poser's most well known piece. The English version is is known as "Carol of the Bells".
Space Pioneers Yuri Kondratyuk Mikhail Yangel Yuri Kondratyuk is generally credited with the authorship of the first known Lunar Orbit Rendezvous (LOR), a key concept for human landing on the Moon and returning to Earth, published in 1916. LOR was later used by the Apollo missions for human spaceflight to the Moon. Mikhail Yangel was a leading missile designer in the Soviet Union. He designed the R 12, R 16 and R 36 ICBMs, which are still in use today. For his outstanding work, Mikhail Yangel was awarded the Lenin Prize in 1960 and USSR State Prize in 1967. Nikolai Kibalchich Sergei Korolev Nikolai Kibalchich was a Ukrainian scientist, taking part in the assassination of Tsar Alexander II as the main explosive expert. He was also a rocket pioneer. In a note written in his prison cell, Kybalchych proposed a manned jet air navigating apparatus. He examined the design of powder rocket engine, controlling the flight by changing engines angle. Sergei Korolev was the lead Soviet rocket engineer and spacecraft designer in the Space Race between the United States and the Soviet Union during the 1950s and 1960s. He is considered by many as the father of practical astronautics
National Folktales This set of three stamps shows 3 Ukrainian Folktales. The first stamp shows Kolobok (Pancake) trying to "sweet talk" the Fox. The second stamp shows Pan Kotskyi (Mr. Cat). The third stamp shows Kurochka Rjaba (Speckled Chicken). Hanna Sobchak Hanna Sobchak was a famous embroiderer and later master of decorative compositions on paper. These threww stamps show three of her works: "Bird cage, 1963", "Flowers in a vase, 1964", and "Daisies, 1964" Marine Animals The pair of stamps was a joint issue with Kazakhstan. The left stamp shows the Caspian Sea and the Caspian Seal (Phoca caspica). The right stamp shows the Black Sea and the Black Sea Beluga (Huso huso ponticus).
New Year The New Year stamp shows a Christmas tree with Santa Claus standing in front of it. Odessafil The 8th Ukrainian Philatelic Exhibition took place in Odessa Ukraine. This stamp was issued to commomerate the event. Khotyn This stamp celebrates the 1000th anniversary of the city of Khotyn, located in Chernivtsi Oblast of western Ukraine. Khotyn Fortress, built in 1325, is the primary tourist attraction of the region. Kiev In Works Of Art These three stamps shows areas of the Ukrainian Capital Kiev as painted by Taras Shevchenko. The 45k. stamp shows the painting "Askoldova Mogila", painted in 1845. The 75k. stamps has. "V Kievi", painted in 1844. The 80k. stamp shows "Castle of Saint Aleksandr in Kiev", painted in 1846.
Traditional Ukrainian Costumes This minature sheet of six stamps shows traditional attire from 3 different regions of Ukraine. The first row shows shows costumes from Vinnytsia, the second row Cherkasy, and the third row Ternopil.
Definitive Stamps 5th Definitive Series Lilacs In Ukraine issued one stamp in it's fifth definitive series with the letter designation "C." The stamp sold for 80k and was to be combined with other stamps to a postal rate. Periwinkle 6th Definitive Series Hollyhocks Marigolds Blue Cornflower Ukraine's 6th Definitive Series carries the same floral theme as the previous definitive stamps, but abandoned letter designations in favor of actual values. The 5k, 10k and 30k stamps were meant to be used in conjunction with other stamps to complete required postage. the 45k stamps was the postal rate of a domestic letter.
