Introduction The 7 th Baltic Earth Science Steering Group Meeting was a short half-day meeting and took place prior to the 1 st Baltic Earth Conference in Nida, Lithuania. TOP 1: Organizational Issues 1.1. Approval of the agenda The agenda for the 7 th BESSG meeting (Annex 1) was unanimously approved. 1.2. Approval of the previous Baltic Earth SSG meeting minutes The minutes of the 6 th Baltic Earth SSG meeting were unanimously approved. 1.3. Review of the previous (#5/6) Baltic Earth SSG meeting action items The following action items of the previous meeting were discussed: Collect information on recent and planned activities related to the recent MBIs and pass on to Marcus Reckermann to post it on the website (WG Chairs and members). Pending Related to international embedment, prepare a typology or inventory of Earth System research organizations and networks which may be relevant for Baltic Earth (Marcus Reckermann, Sergey Zhuravlev). Pending Draft an Outreach and Communication Plan (WG members for Outreach and Communication) Pending Background explanatory information of GCs/WGs to Marcus Reckermann to post it on the outreach pages of the Baltic Earth website (to all WGs). Pending Draft and send out a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) concerning a voluntary commitment to participation and contributions to Baltic Earth by Baltic Sea region research institutes. In preparation after the finalization of the Science Plan 1.4. Membership issues Following the Baltic Earth conference in Nida, both Hans von Storch and Sirje Keevallik (by e- mail) declared their retirement from the Baltic Earth SSG. Both had been members of the BALTEX and Baltic Earth Science Steering groups for many years. Hans had joined the BALTEX Steering group in 2005, and became its chair in 2010. Sirje had been a member of the BALTEX Science Steering group from 1997. Furthermore, it was suggested to ask two renown scientists to join the Baltic Earth Science Steering group: Erik Kjellström from SMHI (Head of Rossby Centre), Sweden, climate modeler, and Jens Christian Refsgaard from the Danish Survey of Denmark and Greenland (GEUS), Denmark, hydrologist. This would strengthen the SMHI participation and climate modelling aspect, and also the Danish participation and hydrology aspect (both had been previously been active in BALTEX). 4

TOP 2: Potential collaboration and joint Workshop with ESA Diego Fernandez from ESA was present as a guest and gave a presentation about ESA s activities and plans concerning Remote Sensing in the Baltic Sea region and a potential collaboration with scientists from the Baltic Sea. It was proposed and discussed to organize a joint workshop by ESA and Baltic Earth to investigate potential interest in remote sensing applications in the Baltic Sea region. Scope should be to identify gaps in observation which could be filled by remote sensing applications, and in general, what the current challenges for remote sensing applications in the Baltic Sea region are. One challenge could be how to document and study anthropogenic changes in the Baltic Sea region. The workshop will be organized by ESA and Baltic Earth on 29 and 30 March at the Finnish Meteorological Institute in Helsinki. The workshop is organized around invited oral presentations and discussions. Sessions will be designed around dedicated topics related to the workshop s objectives and an interactive session will be organized around selected posters. Poster authors are required to submit abstracts, 200-250 words, by the 31 th January 2017. The official language of the workshop is English, no participation/registration fee will be charged but participants are expected to finance their own travel and accommodation. TOP 3: 1 st Baltic Earth Conference issues The conference outcomes shall be documented by a. the conference proceedings and presentations (mostly available online); b. by a conference and discussion summary for which session conveners should shortly summarize the main points in their sessions, and by discussion leaders who will lead the short discussions after each session block. The conference outcomes are now available on the aftermath page of the conference website (www.baltic.earth/nida2016/aftermath.html). A special issue on the conference topic Multiple drivers for Earth system changes in the Baltic Sea region will be published in Earth System Dynamics. At the time of submission start (1 Sept 2016), 36 contributions were announced by conference authors and other scientists. The submission period ends on 31 Dec 2016. TOP 4: Past Baltic Earth activities in 2016 Second Workshop on the Major Baltic Inflow of December 2014, 13 April 2016 at IOPAN, Sopot, Poland (Markus Meier) The workshop was attended by about 50 scientists. and new data on the recent inflows were presented. Many research groups contributed to the workshop. A common paper on the recent Baltic inflows is envisaged. International Conference on Regional Climate-CORDEX 2016, 17-20 May 2016, Stockholm, Sweden (Markus Meier) Baltic Earth contributed to an informal discussion on "The use of coupled RCMs (also called RCSM or RESM) in CORDEX and specifically in the coming flagship pilot studies".
