Update on pending legislation... Page 2 Many of our fellow hobbyists have been watching the news intently regarding pending FAA restrictions on model aircraft flying. Information on the original article can be found at this link: http://www.aero-news.net/index.cfm?contentblockid=80760875-a5a3-451e-b415-7c5248645401 Following is updated information about a pending bill that would help to maintain the hobby closer to our current state. Please consider reaching out to your representatives to encourage support of this bill! AMA Works to Amend Reauthorization Bill Providing Relief for Model Aviation from suas Rules 20 February 2011 By gary M U N C I E, I N Sen. James Inhofe, OK, successfully sponsored S.223 in the Senate yesterday with an amendment specifying a Special Rule For Model Aircraft that provides an exemption from regulation for model aircraft operating within the following parameters: Flown specifically for recreational, sport, competition, or academic purposes; Operated in accordance with a community-based set of safety guidelines within the programming of a nationwide community-based organization; Limited to 55 pounds or less unless certified through a design, construction, inspection, flight test, and operational safety program currently administered by a community-based organization. On behalf of our 140,000 members I want to thank Senator Inhofe, Chairman Jay Rockefeller and Ranking Republican Kay Bailey Hutchinson for their leadership in shepherding the FAA reauthorization bill through the U.S. Senate, said Academy of Model Aeronautics President Dave Mathewson. Aeromodeling is an exceptional family recreational and education activity that has traditionally been a stepping stone for our children to careers in aviation and aerospace. With the Senators help we hope model aviation will continue to help provide that impetus for future generations of engineers, pilots and astronauts. The bill now moves to the House of Representatives, which is expected to rule on the matter in the very near future. AMA has contended that the purpose and operation of model aircraft flown for recreational purposes is uniquely different from the operation of the growing number of commercial small unmanned aircraft systems (suas) for which the FAA is drafting regulation. Aeromodelers operating under AMA s guidelines have earned a reputation of being one of the safest, if not the safest users of the National Airspace System. This exemplary safety record spans more than 75 years. The Academy of Aeronautics, founded in 1936, charters 2,400 clubs across the country, sanctioning more than 2,000 events and competitions as a member of the National Aeronautic Association. It is dedicated to promoting aeromodeling as a recreational, competitive and academic pursuit. Kansas Aviation Museum to Host Aviation Camp for Youth Page 3 The Kansas Aviation Museum formally announces the introduction of its first annual summer aviation camp. The camp, entitled Taking Wing, will be exclusively for fifth grade students and will include multiple, half-day sessions lead by a host of aviation professionals representing several hundred years of collective knowledge regarding aviation history and manufacturing. Participants will learn the basics of flying, create a flight plan and follow that course on the museum's flight simulator, learn about the beginnings of aviation in Wichita, have a dogfight in the museum's Simulation Adventure Center, build and fly their own model aircraft, sit in the cockpit and learn about the functions of a KC-135 refueling tanker and/or Boeing 727 airliner and on the final day of the camp, go on an actual flight with Captain Doug Moler - a retired 747 pilot - in his Beechcraft Bonanza. The camp is offered beginning June 20th through the 24th from 9:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. each day. Cost for the camp is $125 dollars per person. For additional information about the camp, Contact the KAM by phone at: 316-683-9242 877-683-9242 toll free or by email at: lonsmith@kansasaviationmuseum.org Be sure to check the website for other upcoming events and opportunities! www.kansasaviationmuseum.org 2011 WRCC Membership Renewals It is time to renew your WRCC Membership. Please submit a new membership application with your annual membership dues so that we have current information on each member. The application is available to print on our website at www.wichitaradiocontrolclub.org. You must also have a current AMA membership to fly at the WRCC sponsored fields. Visit www.modelaircraft.org for membership information and to renew or join.

Found on the Web. Page 4 Heh heh I just heard a gnat fart. Try doing a Google search for Aircraft detection before radar and you ll find lots of pictures like this one (however, the thought balloon was an editorial add ). Lots of crazy-looking devices to help hear aircraft before they were visible. Formula Bob Submitted by Bob Maltby As you re cleaning up your planes for the spring thaw, you might give this tried and true recipe a shot! 5 cups water 1/2 cup ammonia 1 cup rubbing alcohol 1 ounce Dawn dish soap Mix all ingredients in a clean milk jug. Pour enough in a spray bottle for field use. This solution will cut through the oil buildup on the underside of your plane and leave it squeaky clean. The recipe may be cut in half if you don t need a whole gallon. Dawn liquid dish soap seems to be the only dish detergent that cuts all the oils without leaving a residue on the plane.
