HARDMOORS 55 RACE ROUTE 2018 HELMSLEY - GUISBOROUGH HELMSLEY - CHECKPOINT 1 (WHITE HORSE) 1. Leave RACE START, continue ahead on road (Baxtons Sprunt) At crossroads turn right down Canons Garth eventualy passing the Feversham Arms Hotel on your right and the Church on your left. 2. On reaching the main road (B1257) cross the road and briefly turn right to then take the next lane on the left (aptly named the Cleveland Way) continue ahead on the lane to reach the official start of the Cleveland Way. 3. Follow the rough stony track along the edge of two fields, pass through the hand gate & turn left to follow the enclosed path down towards the woods. At the woods turn right & continue following the track. Continue straight ahead after leaving the wooded area, pass the small lodge on your right, keep the lodge to your right & continue along the field edge with the plantation to your left. The route leads into the plantation and descends the hillside to meet the Helmsley to Rievaulx road. 4. Turn left along the roadside path. Cross the stone bridge and continue along the road. Ignore your first turn off (Cold Kirby/Old Byland Rd) you will leave the road with the turn off after the bend. 5. Take a right turn through a gate following a forestry track. The track runs alongside a stream. Leave the track to cross the stepping stones on your right. Go through the gate and join the forestry track. At the junction of two forest tracks turn left up Flassen Dale.. At the break in the forest, turn right and climb steeply up a side gully. On reaching the grass field continue ahead with the field fence on your left. Follow Low field lane. 6. When the lane takes a left bend turn right down a short slope and follow the track into Cold Kirby. Pass straight through the village. After the last house on the left turn left along the lane called Cote Moor Road. Follow the walled lane as it turns right then left, along the field edge to reach the forestry track, turn right and continue westwards along the track. At the end of this section of forest continue ahead over the stile. Following the fenced path keep Hambleton House to your right. 7. Cross the stile and turn left along the driveway to reach the A170 at the Hambleton Hotel. Turn right along the main road until you reach the junction for Kilburn and the Yorkshire Gliding Club. 8. Cross the road and take the track, bisecting the angle of the roads, into the woods. When reaching the end of the wooded path, turn left and follow the path along the escarpment for about a mile or so, towards the end of the escarpment. Follow the steep steps down to the White Horse car park and CHECKPOINT 1 WHITE HORSE (9miles)

CHECKPOINT 1 (WHITE HORSE) - CHECKPOINT 3 (OSMOTHERLEY) 9. Leaving Checkpoint 1 the trail continues along path found at the northern end of car park. Follow this back in the direction you have just come from through woods, do not deviate to any paths on your left and continue straight ahead until you eventually see a path leading uphill to your right, you will pass a bench on your left hand side. 10. On completion of climb up to Sutton Bank plateau, follow path to left and follow escarpment to main road. Cross over road. Pass by car park on your right and continue alongside the escarpment. The path then follows a huge arc. Ignore any signs to Hambleton Road and keep to top path. The trail leads to Sneck Yate road.follow obvious path through small plantation, emerge from plantation through a gate on to a green lane, continuing ahead to reach farm road above Low Paradise Farm. Turn right up gated road following a climb through wooded hillside, pass through High Paradise Farm to reach a TJunction and CHECKPOINT 2 (13mile)

11. Leave the checkpoint to turn left along the wide track. Follow the track, eventually reaching SQUARE CORNER (21miles) and the Osmotherley to Hawnby road 12. On reaching the road the route branches off left leaving the road. Follow the route downhill and eventually through the woodland. Turn right to the footbridge over the Beck and follow the track alongside the edge of the reservoir. At the western end of this reservoir go through the gate and continue through the middle of the field along the vehicle access track, cross the bridge at the corner of the lower reservoir, the track leads uphill and emerges on to the Osmotherley to Hawnby road. 13. Turn left down the road for a few metres & then take a sharp right up the farm road signposted Cleveland Way'. Turn left of the track over a stile (Just pass the entrance to White House Farm) The trail bears right on approaching White House Farm, keep the farm & buildings to the left & proceed right across the field and downhill to reach the gate. 14. Continue downhill near to the right hand side field boundary, over the farm track to reach the footbridge over Cod Beck. The path winds uphill steeply through a woodland edge to emerge in a field. Cross the field and go across the next field. 15. Follow the well defined pathway alongside the hedge to reach Beck Lane. Opposite is a passage. Follow this through an enclosed route to the main street. 16. Turn left leaving the passage passing by the Bus Shelter and cross the road to reach Osmotherley Village Hall CHECKPOINT 3 (23miles)

CHECKPOINT 3 (OSMOTHERLEY Village Hall) - CHECKPOINT 5 (CLAY BANK) 17. After leaving the hall turn left and continue straight on at the junction and uphill through the village along the road signposted to Swainby. 18. At the top of the hill turn left along Rueberry Lane. The lane eventually becomes a farm track, climbing for a short distance before circling Rueberry Hill on a level course; do not take the path branching off to the right. Uphill, the trail continues past Chapel Wood Farm, through the gate and straight ahead along the farm track at the bottom edge of the field. Immediately through the gate into South Wood turn right along the track leading uphill through the forestry plantation. 19. The trail continues along the level top through the scrub woodland. The enclosed section of path between the stone wall and perimeter fence leads past the TV station. 20. The trail descends and leaves the forest area through a gate and then through another gate on the Scarth Wood Moor. Descend alongside by the wall to reach the road. 21. Turn left across the cattle grid then immediately turn right through a gate into the wood. The path joins a forestry track. Continue straight ahead along level ground. At the break in the forest descend down the wide break on the left. 22. AT the bottom of the hill, turn left then immediately before the farm gate turn right down a path which leads you along through a woodland edge. Take the stile on your left into the field, take a bearing across the field more or less at a right angle to the stile. This leads to a gate and over a footbridge. 23. On reaching the lane turn left and follow the lane uphill until it reaches the T-Junction.

24. At the T-junction cross the road to the right of the houses to reach CHECKPOINT 4 Scugdale (27miles) 25. After leaving the checkpoint go directly through the gate straight ahead and along the enclosed path leading uphill towards Live Moor Plantation. 26. The hardcore path leads alongside the plantation, turn right through the gate and continue up a steep climb through the trees. At the top edge of the plantation the trail continues uphill and contours left at the side of Live Moor. From Live Moor the route ahead leads to Carlton Moor. A descent from Live Moor is made before the route leads upwards. Follow the path over Carlton Moor. The route takes a left fork to reach the cliff edge and the Ordinance Survey triangulation pillar and the route leaves the trig point and descends Carlton Bank to reach the road. 27. Cross the road, and pass through the gate opposite. The route continues along a level path passing a small copse of trees on your left, continue keeping the toilet block and the entrance to Lord s Café to your right. 28. Continue ahead keep fence line on your right, at next field corner go through gate to follow path leading uphill towards Cringle Moor, follow route as it descends from Cringle Moor on a stone path. 29. Continue on path with stone wall on right. At end of stone wall turn right and go through gate to follow wall on left leading uphill. Go through gate to follow wall on left for 55 metres. 30. Turn left with wall on left, leading uphill. Go through gate, continue uphill with steep climb up on to COLD MOOR. Cross top of Cold Moor, descend through gate to follow wall on right down to Garfit Gap. 31. Pass through next gate and climb up Hasty Bank to reach rock pinnacles of the WAINSTONES. Head for left of rocks & through various paths to find narrow route between boulders. Pass through Wainstones continue along plateau of Hasty Bank, descend route to CHECKPOINT 5 CLAY BANK (33miles) CHECKPOINT 5 (CLAY BANK) - CHECKPOINT 6 (KILDALE VILLAGE HALL) 32. Cross through the gate and turn right to walk downhill to reach the B1257 (Stokesley to Helmsley road). Cross the road and pick up the route on the opposite side of the road, pass through the bridlegate and follow the route uphill alongside the wall on your left and pass through the gate. Continue on main track 33. Pass by the trig point (highest point on the North York Moors, 454metres/1,489feet). Pass by the Hand Stone on the right of the path and a short distance further along the Face Stone on your left. Continue along the route. DO NOT TAKE THE FIRST TRACK TO THE RIGHT NOR THE SECOND TO THE LEFT. The track takes a sharp left but take the route ahead (a signed with the Cleveland way Acorn) which eventually joins another track (which when you reach, turn right) until BLOWORTH CROSSING (OS 617 015) 36miles

34. On reaching Bloworth Crossing (Cleveland Way sign post) turn left and the trail continues along the ancient roadway for a further 2.5 miles before branching off on a right fork at Tidy Brown Hill. The trail continues along level ground. The moorland road continues onto Ingleby Greenhow but at Tidy Brown Hill fork right. The path descends from Tidy Brown gate & onto a tarmac rd where you continue straight ahead. At the cattle grid the rd turns to drop down Warren Moor, on reaching the rd junction turn right & follow the road until you reach, CHECKPOINT 6 KILDALE VILLAGE HALL (42 miles) CHECKPOINT 6 (KILDALE) - CHECKPOINT 7 (ROSEBERRY TOPPING) 35. Proceed through Kildale village and take your first turning on your left (which leads to the church and the railway station) after 27 metres take the first turning right down the lane, pass under the railway bridge and over the River Leven. Continue uphill past Bankside cottage and continue up the road as it climbs through Pale End Plantation. At the brow of the hill leave the tarmac road and turn left into Lonsdale Forest along a forestry road. 36. A short way along here the route leaves the forestry road and forks left into the forest. DO NOT TAKE THE FOREST PATH LEADING TOWARDS THE HILLSIDE EDGE. The path goes along the edge of Coate Moor and eventually emerges from the forest up a short climb on to some heather moor with the plantation still on your right. Captain Cook s monument comes into view (depending on what light you have) when you pass through an open break in the stone wall and reach the edge of Easby Moor, take the north-north-easterly direction path. The path descends Cockshaw Hill through the plantation. 37. Go through the gate at the bottom of the hill and turn right along the road for a few yards. The trail then turns sharply left, directly up the stepped path leading to the top of Great Ayton Moor. When you reach the top, the path continues along level ground alongside a small plantation on the left. At the northern end of Slacks wood there is a gate in the wall ahead. Go through and down to the left along the obvious track, to climb to the summit of ROSEBERRY TOPPING and CHECKPOINT 7 (OS 587 128).

CHECKPOINT 7 (ROSEBERRY TOPPING) - CHECKPOINT 8 (RACE FINISH) Retrace your steps back to the hand gate. After passing through take the bridleway which bisects the angle of the boundary walls, leading onto the moor in an easterly direction. Cross Newton moor, on reaching the junction turn right. Continue on this track until reaching the next junction. On reaching junction turn right 38.. Go through the gate to join the wide track leading up across Hutton Moor. 39. Continue along here for 180 metres then turn left along path towards Black Nab. The path follows a contour line at first, and then bends round to left, leading downhill to meet corner of a wall below Black Nab. The trail now follows the wall on your left hand side across a wide stretch of level ground. Soon after passing access to Highcliffe Farm take a steady uphill route towards the corner of Highcliff Wood. On reaching plantation, turn left through a gate and continue ahead at edge of the woods. Cross over track and continue uphill to HIGHCLIFF NAB (OS 610 138) 51miles 40. Continue along escarpment edge to reach a forestry road. Turn left along this wide road, at the junction turn left downhill, at bottom of slope bear right (another track comes in from left). Pass a new forestry track on your right. At next junction take right fork right and follow track as it takes a left bend uphill. The path then levels out. A forest track comes downhill and meets path, continue ahead on level track and ignore any other routes for almost a mile. Eventually path reaches a T-Junction, turn left here downhill to emerge from forest. The trail bends right, Leave this (just before it bends round left) pass through gate, turn immediately left to cross a small gully to reach a gate. Cross through gate and turn left downhill along track and concrete farm road. Follow this track until it reaches the Disused Railway Line. Turn left onto the Disused Railway Line. 41. Continue along the Disused Railway line for 1mile. Ignore the first right turning (Butt Lane). Take the second main right turning and descend down the steps to reach the road. Turn left and head down the road, ignore the first road on the right and take the second turning on the right (Signed Guisborough Sea Cadets) to reach the RACE FINISH GUISBOROUGH SEACADETS
