Knowledge, Information and Communication Technology habits and needs in Myanmar: results of a nationally representative survey Event Report LIRNEasia together with MIDO hosted 2 data dissemination events on the 29 th and 30 th of July 2015. As part of the IDRC and DFID funded Myanmar Project titled Inclusion in the information society in Asia, LIRNEasia carried out the first nationwide baseline survey on telecommunication needs and uses in Myanmar in February and March 2015. The survey was carried out in all accessible regions of the country (i.e. 298 townships out of a total of 330 in the country). Over 8100 household surveys were carried out, along with over 550 Ward/Village Tract Leader surveys. The data of this study was disseminated at two events on the 29 th and 30 th of July 2015, in Yangon and Nay Pyi Taw respectively. 1. Presentation of findings to NGOs, Media and other stakeholders at the Sule Shangri La, Yangon on 29 th July 2015 from 1000 1200 hrs, followed by lunch for all participants. Subsequent to a brief introduction to the survey and the event being delivered by Htaike Htaike Aung, Helani Galpaya carried out a 50 minute presentation covering the key findings of the nationwide survey carried out by LIRNEasia earlier this year. Invitations to this event were widely distributed among NGOs, media, other interested stakeholders as well as the 18 members of the Union Parliament who participated in the ICT Awareness Programme for Myanmar Parliamentarians which was conducted by LIRNEasia in July 2014. In addition, Naser Faruqui of IDRC and Dr. Michael Best of the UNU graced the event. A total of 46 participants were in the room, excluding those from LIRNEasia, MIDO, IDRC, UNU, ThirdEye and hsenid. Of these, the bulk of the participants (approximately 33) were from the local media. Furthermore, 2 opposition Members of Parliament, 3 from the NGO sector and 5 participants represented the corporate sector at this event. Several others have declined to comment regarding their organizations. The book titled Mobile Communication by Rich Ling and Jonathan Donner which was translated in to Barma was formally presented to U Kyaw Min M.P. and U Myint Oo M.P. by Naser Faruqui and Dr. Rohan Samarajiva at this event. Copies of the book were made available to all participants at the event. A comprehensive Q & A session followed the presentation, with Helani Galpaya, Phyu Phyu Thi (MIDO) and Htun Htun Oo (ThirdEye Co. Ltd) taking questions from the audience. Both Helani Galpaya and Phyu Phyu Thi were interviewed separately by various media institutions thereafter.

2. Presentation of findings to U Thaung Tin, Union Deputy Minister of Communication and Information Technology and other Government officers at the Aureum Palace Hotel, Nay Pyi Taw on 30 th July 2015 from 1030 1230, followed by lunch for all participants. The team comprising of Helani Galpaya, Dr. Rohan Samarajiva, Naser Faruqui, Phyu Phyu Thi, Yatanar Htun, Htaike Htaike Aung, Nay Phone Latt, Nay Myo Kyaw, Htun Htun Oo and simultaneous translator Addy Chen travelled by coach to Nay Pyi Taw in order to present the findings of the survey to U Thaung Tin. This presentation was carried out at the Aureum Palace Hotel to a small audience. It was deemed important to present the findings in person to the Deputy Minister, and whomsoever of his Ministry and other Government bodies he wished to have present at the event. The content of the presentation was identical to that which was carried out in Yangon the preceding day.. A comprehensive Q & A was carried out after the 50 minute presentation by Helani Galpaya. Several copies of the translated version of Mobile Communication was presented to the Deputy Minister. All other participants were also gifted a copy of the book. The above presentations were the highlights of this trip. However, several other smaller presentations and meetings were conducted during this visit to Myanmar. Helani Galapaya presented the findings to two smaller, more focused groups on the 28 th of July in Yangon; i. The ICT4D Working Group at the Phandeeyar auditorium ii. Gunnar Bertelsen, Chief Corporate Affairs Officer of Telenor Myanmar at the Telenor Office Unfortunately, Ooredoo Myanmar was unable to grant an appointment to LIRNEasia to carry out a similar presentation in their office, due to other commitments which they had to meet. Dr. Rohan Samarajiva met with the President and General Secretary of the Myanmar Computer Federation (MCF), pursuant to such suggestion made to him by U Thaung Tin. This meeting was held on the 28 th of July at the MCF office in Yangon. On a separate note, Helani Galpaya, Nilusha Kapugama and Chiranthi Rajapakshe were part of the GSMA/LIRNEasia Research synthesis meeting on ICTs gender which was held on the 27 th of July in Yangon, while Ayesha Zainudeen joined the meeting from Sri Lanka via Skype.
