Volume 77 Issue 19 Tuesday 15 November 2011 Chris Don the District 9800 Rotary Foundation Chairperson was our guest speaker today. Chris has made 5 previous visits to our club speaking about Foundation and on Tuesday his message was about the Rotary Peace Centres which are courses conducted at various Universities throughout the world. Each year the foundation spends $6 Million educating 100 graduates from different courses and countries, in peace and conflict resolution studies. To date there have been approximately 580 graduates who have found work in areas such The United Nations, universities, NGO s and the Diplomatic Corp, spreading Rotary s ideals of peace & understanding. Fortunately, Chris does not have a very difficult job selling The Rotary Foundation to clubs in District 9800 as we are the largest supporters in Australia, contributing $1.53Million in the last 4 years and Essendon is one of the better contributors in our district. Much of the money contributed by clubs in our district comes back to the clubs in the form of matching grants for international projects. Chris also announced that the Australian Government has recently agreed to contribute $50Million towards the Polio Plus Project which is getting very close to achieving its goal of eradicating polio from the world. Australia has a strong connection to the polio plus project with an Australian doctor beginning an immunization program in the Philippines and it then being adopted by Rotary as an International program. Also, Royce Abbey in his time as head of Rotary International was a strong supporter of the program. President Nominee Announced Vice President Peter Baker announced today that the President Nominee for the 2013-2014 Rotary Year is Boris Struk. Boris joined the Rotary Club of Essendon in 1994 and has served as chair of various committees as well as being Sergeant & program chairperson. Congratulations Boris!!

The Rotary Club of Essendon P.O Box 161 Essendon, VIC 3040 Club President: Steve Roe Club Secretary: Rob Thomas www.rcessendon.com.au Vale Barry Matthew Wallis 22/3/43-7/11/11 Barry was a member of the Club in the mid 80,s with the classification of Lottery Agent. Married at the time to Lynn and with a daughter Jannine and son Matthew. Barry commenced work with the State Savings Bank and continued with them until purchasing the Ascot Vale Rd. Tattslotto and news agency. From there he started a business as a courier for Tattslotto returns. Barry died in the Royal Melbourne Hospital following a massive stroke. A quote from his funeral - Loved a good time, a drink, a smoke, usually with music blaring. Quick with a joke, an easy person to talk to (or argue with). His smiling face will always be remembered. Today s Attendance 34 members and 4 guests Our hard-working Treasurer announced that 4 members still have not paid subs for the year. You know who you are! Birthdays: Don Knee 9 th Nov Anniversary: Bill Molinaro 1966 Maurie Mollica 1971 Norm Mollica 1971 Rob Thomas 1984 Silver Pot & Fines: So far this year the sergeants have collected $305.15 (okay who put in the 15 cents?) which goes to the administration of the club and you have donated $420.70 to the silver pot which goes to the project account and then often to Foundation. Deb Phelan is involved in organising Christmas hampers for (mostly) the Sudanese Communities of Footscray, Melton & Werribee. She would be very grateful to receive grocery items such as pasta, noodles, canned foods, flour, sugar, toilet paper, tissues, toiletries etc. basic everyday items but nothing perishable. Goods can be left in bags or boxes at Fredricks and Deb will collect them each week.

Leslie John Steele February 1926 September 2011 Out and about.. City2Sea fun run Essendon Rotarians were busy last weekend working on community projects. At the inaugural City2Sea fun run on Sunday morning, Steve & Kerry Roe, Peter & Sue Duras, Peter Condos, Barb Wyatt, Peter Baker & exchange student Raul from Brazil assisted as marshals, earning money for the club. Paid volunteers! Maybe that will catch on elsewhere! Interestingly, Peter Baker knew several people competing but didn t spot any of them while Raul spotted three he knew!

Raul from Brazil who was happy to help out and met several Club members on Sunday. Our hard-working Vice- President evaded the camera at the fun run so we can all enjoy another look at his fine pair of knickerbockers from our German Day. Olives and Strawberries On Sunday afternoon the Community Committee lead by Maria Kouppas sold Strawberries & Cream at the Olive Festival held at Tabcorp Park, Melton. A great day was had with lots of strawberries sold and plenty of help given by Rotary's favourite sons and daughters. Big thanks go to Michael Mahoney for putting up his famous "Blow Up" tent and all the tables.

Also providing valuable assistance were Gaye and Michael Cariss, Leno and Angelina Airo-Farulla, Pat and Alistair Fraser, Norm and Gwen Mollica, Richard Lawrence and Inspector Paul Alinson from Vic Police who is part of the Rotary Police Mentoring programme. Also thanks to Roger Priestley for his supply of cream and water. Over $1000 was raised for the Club, a great effort. Well done to all members, partners, policemen and exchange students who gave up their time to assist in a busy weekend of community support and fundraising and had a lot of fun along the way!
