Conference Opening: The Hon Brad Hazzard MP Minister for Planning and Infrastructure Keynote address: The Hon Justice Brian Preston Chief Judge of the Land & Environment Court of NSW

The 2011 EPLA Conference is being held at The Sydney Mechanics School of Arts, 280 Pitt Street, Sydney on October 13 & 14, 2011. Founded 1833 as the School of Arts for the Mechanics of Sydney, the SMSA is the oldest Mechanics Institute/School of Arts, and the library has over 32,000 books making it one of the largest fiction libraries in central Sydney. Many of the tenants at 280 Pitt Street are not-for-profit or educational organisations. I am delighted to announce The Hon Brad Hazzard, MP Minister for Planning and Infrastructure, will open the Conference on Thursday, October 13, 2011 and the Keynote Address at the Conference will be delivered by the Hon Justice Brian Preston, Chief Judge of the Land and Environment Court. The Conference will address important current issues such as Climate Change, Heritage and Exempt Development, and Recent Developments both legislation and case law. At the request of delegates to the Kiama Conference in 2010, the Workshop Program will be returning in 2011 and will focus on joint reports, expert witnesses and advocacy skills. There will also be a great opportunity to raise issues with the Co-chairs of the NSW Planning System Review, Tim Moore and Ron Dyer. At the conclusion of Day 1 (Thursday, October 13), The President s Drinks will be held at 5.30pm, at The Attic Bar of The Arthouse Hotel, hosted by Gadens Lawyers. The Arthouse Hotel building (across the road and next door to the Hilton Hotel in Pitt Street), is heritage-listed Philip Clay EPLA President featuring original architecture dating back to 1836, formerly the home of the School of Arts. It has been elegantly refurbished to reflect the splendour of the past juxtaposed against functional design principles of the present a fitting venue for an EPLA event. The Conference Dinner will be on Friday, October 14 at 7.00pm at the Museum of Contemporary Art, in The Rocks, Circular Quay. The Museum was established to fulfill the visionary bequest of Australian expatriate artist John Power (1881-1943), who left his personal fortune to the University of Sydney to inform and educate Australians in the visual arts. The site also marks the landing place of the First Fleet in Port Jackson in 1788. The Conference Dinner is always the highlight of the EPLA year, due to the excellent entertainment, and fabulous food from Fresh Catering. Delegates should reserve the dates and register their interest with Michele Kearns, EPLA Secretary at kearns@mpchambers.net.au. I look forward to seeing you at the 2011 Conference. Philip Clay, President EPLA
