SPECIAL VALENTINES It seems that the older one get's, the less we pay attention to days of the year that have true heart-felt meaning, and I would like to point out that this was not the case with the past Valentine's Day for some of the gals with-in our chapter. So, to all the guys that had a hand in making the day for their ladies a complete one with the surprise of the Quartet Visit, I would like to extend my most sincere "Thanks". Ann Byxbe ed: Yes, Thank you very much from all of your ladies for a very special Valentine surprise. ***~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~***~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~*** ANNOUNCING THE WINNER OF THE 2008 MIDNIGHT RIDE T-SHIRT DESIGN CONTEST KIM OLEN from Tennessee (Pete & Sherry Wright s daughter) ***~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~***~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~*** 2007 Couple of the Year Comments Thank you, Jim and Julie Meredith, our Chapter Directors, Randy and Fay Vieu, our Assistant Chapter Directors, and all of the members of Chapter MI-G for selecting Ezra and me as your Couple of the Year for 2007. This has been such a wonderful experience representing our chapter in this capacity. Sometime during 2007, we decided to take the next step to compete for the Michigan District Couple of the Year for 2008 at Wingless Weekend. We wanted to represent our chapter in this event. We hope that we represented you well this last year and at Wingless. We spent the weekend making new friends and meeting old friends. Everyone we met encouraged us as we prepared for our presentation. All of the couples who came to compete are fantastic and are great representatives of their chapters. Larry and Rose Shivers, District COY coordinators, made great hosts, giving us tips and advice along the way. We would like to thank District Staff for all their hard work that they put into Wingless Weekend. We had a great time. We want to thank Ken and Rita Moffit, the 2008 Region D Couple of the Year, for their advice and encouragement, as well. Ezra and I want to encourage all future COYs to participate in the Michigan District Couple of the Year competition and represent our chapter. It is a little bit stressful, but is a whole lot of FUN. But the best part is meeting the other couples and making new friends. We would like to extend our CONGRATULATIONS to Brad and Connie Garner, who have been chosen as our Michigan District Couple of the Year for 2008. 5

Chapter Director s Ramblings WINGLESS WEEKEND I believe all who attended this year s version had a good time. Good entertainment by a hypnotist. It sure was funny watching some of the things he had people doing up on stage. You would have to see it to believe it. We also got to attend our first Couple of the Year competition. I was very impressed by all the contestants who had the courage to stand up there and do their presentations. If you weren t there, you missed our very own couple, Ezra and Marilynn, who did a fantastic job. I can tell you I m glad I didn t have to judge this competition, as all were great. March will be our last month for a while meeting at a restaurant. Starting in April, we will change our meeting location, day, and time. We ll begin meeting in the conference room at my office. The chapter will provide coffee and snacks and we will move the date to Sundays at 8:00 AM. It is our hope that this will make it easier on the pocketbook and by meeting so early we ll be able to take some nice rides afterward. We re shooting for the second Sunday of each month, but some will have to be moved to accommodate other events. So, you ll have to keep on an eye on your newsletter. We will also send out reminders when the meeting date is changed. Also, beginning this month, we will have a suggestion box for everyone to contribute ideas for rides, events or anything you think would be fun for the chapter to do. One last note, our 25 th anniversary is this month. In case you missed it, the theme will be a Las Vegas night. Faye and her team have put a lot of thought and work into this, so you won t want to miss it. Come on out and try your luck and help us celebrate our 25 th anniversary. Well that s about it for this month and, hopefully, we ll be back up on two wheels very soon. Everyone, please travel safely no matter what your mode of transportation is. Jim & Julie Meredith Assistant Chapter Director s Notes ] GOING TO WINGLESS This was the first time Fay and I went to Wingless. Most of you know we usually go snowmobiling to Sault Ste Marie on the same weekend. We arrived with slippers in hand, ready to compete in the slipper contest. We both felt a little uncomfortable about wearing our PJ s around the hotel. That soon changed. Saturday morning we went down to register for the slipper contest and to look at what other things we could do for the rest of the day. It took awhile for the judging of the boxer shorts, best PJ s couple and chapter, and slippers. Fay and I, (and Shrek), paraded around and ended up taking a second place. It was amazing to see how many of the chapters had so many of their members in attendance. I would like to see if we could get a majority of our chapter at next year s Wingless. If cost is a factor, consider sharing a room with another couple from the chapter. That is what we learned to do with our snowmobile group. The best part was being there to watch and support our own Couple of the Year, Ezra and Marilynn compete in the district couple of the year. They did a great job! Randy & Fay Vieu ACD 6

Rider Education March 2008 From Rider Ed Directly Trip Planning? Plan the Gear, too! So what have you been thinking about this winter? Have you been thinking about the gray skies, the rain, sleet and snow of the past two months? And how about the freezing temperatures? These are not very cheerful thoughts for those of us who are not winter sports enthusiasts. Some riders brighten their outlook at this time of year by planning for the coming riding season. A few among us are deciding which motorcycling events to attend this summer. Will it be the Americade rally in upstate New York? Maybe Wing Ding in South Carolina? How about a vacation trip to an area with great roads to ride or interesting geological attractions to see? Whatever your destination, planning the route to take is an important part of trip planning; however, don t overlook the need to plan the gear you will need to take with you on each of your trips. Having the proper gear for the ride is an essential element of a successful trip. So why not start with your most important safety gear? Inspect your helmet for wear and tear. How long has it been since you bought your helmet? Does the outer shell have chips or cracks? Has it sustained an impact while you were wearing it? Has it been repeatedly dropped from your motorcycle seat? (It can probably withstand a drop or two, but try to avoid it.) Realize that helmets are only designed to survive one impact while being worn. Also, look at the chin strap. Is it frayed from many years of wear? These signs of damage indicate that it may be time to replace your helmet. Experts advise changing your helmet every 3 to 5 years for maximum protection. Time, wear, and ultraviolet rays will cause your helmets materials to degrade resulting in reduced protection to you. (www.snellfoundation.org.) Are you planning a hot southern tour this summer? (Greenville, SC, is in that category!) If you don t already have one, this may be the time for you to start shopping for a mesh jacket. These jackets give you the best in protection along with maximum ventilation. Good ventilation reduces your discomfort in hot weather and can help prevent heat exhaustion. Even though they have long sleeves, when you wear a mesh jacket, the air flows around you almost as if you are wearing nothing. And, the synthetic materials provide excellent abrasion resistance. With elbow, shoulder, and back pads included, you get great protection for your corners and your back. There are also gloves designed from the same kind of mesh materials to protect your hands as well. They provide you with a good grip on the controls while keeping your hands fully covered for maximum protection. Can you rely on your current rain gear? Does your rain gear have leaky seams or rips? Do you need to put a new jacket or rain pants on the shopping list? Having good, comfortable gear that fits you properly for all riding conditions will allow you to fix your attention on the ride and not on your physical discomforts. This will also help ensure that you will have a great trip. Knowing that you and your co-rider have the protection you need, will give you peace of mind every time you saddle up. Now, which route do we want to take? Lynne Snyder Senior Rider Educator 7
