The 4th Division of the Pacific Northwest Region of the National Model Railroad Association Presents The Skagit Valley & Whidbey NMRA Clinic Wednesday, June 9, 2010 Location: The home of Phil and Susan Gonzales in Oak Harbor Time: 7:00 PM Business: 1. Introductions and items for the good of the order. 2. Visiting the Eastern Sierra Pacific and hanging out The Eastern Sierra Pacific The Eastern Sierra Pacific is an 11' X 16' freelance standard gauge HO railroad that has been under construction for almost 5 years. It is loosely based on the Carson-Colorado railroad line that ran from Carson City to Keeler. The track plan is a folded dog bone. The ESP runs under the motto of: We know where you are going before you do. It is set in early WWII. Our railroad connects to the coast (because we like boats and water) in our (slightly seedy) city of Seaside and to the eastern United States at Piru. From Seaside we run to LA. the refineries and other points west via staging. From Piru we run to Chicago and points east via staging. A branch line runs to the Owens Valley and eastern Sierra region. Negotiations are under way for more real estate and as soon as land can be acquired, tracks will be run from Laws to Carson City staging for ore smelting. Control is with a Digitrax Zephyr with remote plug in panels. Turn-out control is a combination of caboose ground throws and tortoise machines. The layout is planned for operations and I think it will keep 4-6 operators busy for a full evening or afternoon. Working on the railroad has been alot of fun for both of us. Carpooling to our small house is encouraged. [See map on page 4] Parking on the street around the corner (Orchard Loop) should be okay. We will clear that with the neighbors. Please bring a folding chair if you have one. Our plan is, weather permitting, to hang out in the backyard, but if that gets rained on we will be crowding into the house. I expect we will be very close friends after this if we weren't before.

Put this on your calendar: Summer Barbecue John Marshall and his lovely wife have again invited our Model Railroad Group to their lovely home in Coupeville for a Summer Barbecue on Wednesday, August 18th at 5:00pm. It will be a semi-potluck as John will provide the meat and we will provide all the side dishes, desserts etc. and our own beverages of choice. We will send out a reminder in July at which time those who wish to attend should RSVP to John directly at 360.678.5448 From Susan Gonzales: I will be updating the lending library list and need volunteers to add to it. For the benefit of newcomers, we have compiled a list of how-to-books, magazines and videos (both vhs and dvd's) that some members are willing to lend to others. We do not actually have a "library" as in a building. How it works is that say you are working on something, scenery for instance, and you want to know how to make rocks. You look down your list and see that Jack Tingstad has not only a book on scenery, but he has rock molds to lend (or he would if John White would ever give them back) so you e-mail or call Jack and he brings them to the next meeting (or not because John White still has them) and you use them until the next meeting. If you do not have a library list let me know. I will be working on a new list this month and hopefully, have it ready for the next meeting. If you have something you want to make available for loan, just e-mail me with the title, author and year. Thanks for all the help! Susan Gonzales fishnutztoo@verizon.net Last Month s Clinic The May Clinic featured John Mann with a discussion concerning all the great things that DCC will do for the model railroader besides just make the locomotive go forward and backwards! John showed many decoder options, sound options and an example of the Digitrax signal system. He also supplied a multipage handout with further information and sources of information for those who want more. The Clinic ended with door prizes from Performance R/C being won by several attendees. A great THANK YOU to Performance R/C in Burlington for their support throughout the year!! If you need any modeling stuff see Suzy and tell her you are part of the Skagit Valley & Whidbey Clinic group!
