The Veterans Car Friday, February 22, 2013, from 8 am to noon, we shared our "special cars" with folks at the Carl T. Hayden Veterans Medical Center. The morning started out rather 'brisk' but the sun came out and it was quite comfortable if you stayed on the 'sunny side of the street.' There were about 32 cars on display, nine from our -PHX club. Those folks were Bob & Patty Sarraillon, Chuck LaVetter, Larry & Sandy Wibeto, Fred Elston, Ron Olmstead, Jim Johnson, Pat Perelli, Ross & Ellen Davis, and Ken Schaaf and myself. They had a tent, with display tables full of items for the VETS to take, like t-shirts, new socks, car magazines, and lots of new hats. (Ken brought 17 hats, all brand new, of course, which he accumulated over the years.) They also had bowls of wrapped candy, crackers, cookies; a large thermos container of water, etc. to just help yourself to. There was a DJ on hand spinning the great 50's music, which folks were article written by Dee keeping in time to as they checked out the cars. The VETS that came outside to enjoy the vehicles were delighted to see the colorful display and talk to some of the folks. One gentleman that Sandy and I stopped to visit with, said he was enjoying the cars, and said, "this is my daughter," (a pretty young lady was seated beside him). She looked at him with a smile and said, "John, did you say I was your daughter?" Then she told us she was a volunteer and worked 30 hours a week here. What dedication. John just had the biggest ole' grin on his face. He was enjoying the sights. It's very heart-warming to watch the faces of the veterans and listen, as they too reminisce about their past. What a great way to share with the VETS. Isabelle Diehl, from -Scottsdale, headed up this show once again. Good job, lady!
