Serving the Hunter for over 20 years with a readership over 4,000 weekly! Thursday 16th January, 2014 The only way to find out what s going on! Missed an issue? www.huntervalleyprinting.com.au/pages/entertainer.php Countdown to the 42nd Tamworth Country Music Festival By Laura Sykes The Tamworth Country Music Festival has long been one of the nation s - and indeed the world s - most loved music festivals and is renowned for great atmosphere, great entertainment, and great music no matter where you go in the town. From the buskers in Peel Street to booked-out concert venues and open-house pub gigs, the town comes alive and will do so for the 42nd time this month with the 2014 Tamworth Country Music Festival. Australia Day long weekend in 1968 saw the Tamworth branch of the Modern Country Music Association host a talent quest. This event is held by many to be the predecessor of the festival that country music lovers from all over Australia know and love today, however the first official year of the festival is set at 1973, when the Country Music Awards were held by Radio 2TM in support of the Country Music Capital promotion with other events including the Bluegrass Championship, Image: The Golden Guitar, Tamworth. what s on Countdown to the 42nd Tamworth Country Music Festival By Laura Sykes Continued from front page Hands of Fame Roll of Renown, the Tamworth Pro Rodeo and several others. It was also the year that a great tradition within the festival was born the buskers of Peel Street. This month the streets of Tamworth will come to life between the dates of January 17 and 26. The pinnacle of the festival comes on the last Saturday in January each year with the red carpet event - the Golden Guitar Awards. Recognised as one of the top ten music festivals in the world, celebrities, hopefuls and just plain music-lovers alike all congregate to celebrate country music, meet up with friends and have a true blue good time. Stroll along Peel Street and listen to some of the best country musician hopefuls from all over Australia. You ll hear some amazing voices, singing everything from favourite old Slim Dusty covers to original songs. Big names like Kasey Chambers, Keith Urban and Troy Cassar-Daley are just some names you ll recognise who once nervously opened their voices and hearts up for the crowds on Peel Street. Around 55,000 visitors turn up every year, and while some locals may find it an inconvenience not to be able to find a park directly outside their favourite shop, Tamworth rejoices at the influx of people for ten days each year. Before the days of the festival, locals used to head to the coast every January to escape the heat and occasional summer flood, as nothing much happened between Christmas and the schools going back in February. The Tamworth Country Music Festival changed all that, and put the town on the map in a big way. And while locals breathe a sigh of relief when the thousands of extra visitors leave at the end, they wouldn t give up their festival for the world. If you want to find out more information about the 2014 Tamworth Country Music Festival, you can look online at www.tamworthcountrymusic.com. au, with new updates and information continually being added in the lead up to this year s event. what s on Like wow! The Hoodoo Gurus are coming to town By Laura Sykes It isn t often that a band maintains chart-topping success for three decades, but for the Hoodoo Gurus, its par for the course as they prepare to take the stage yet again at The Gum Ball Music Festival this year. Held at Dashville, the Johnston family s bushland estate located at Belford in the Hunter Valley; the festival is now in its tenth year and has worked its way up from the bottom to become one of the area s sweetest boutique music showcases. The 11 and 12 of April will see Belford come alive as music groups and fans alike flock to the area. The Hoodoo Gurus are just one of several bands and musicians who will be entertaining crowds over the two-day festival. The group began as Le Hoodoo Gurus in the early 1980s when they recorded their debut single, Leilani, and the journey took flight. Three relocated Perth musicians - Dave Faulkner, Roddy Radalj and James Baker teamed up with Sydney-based Kimble Rendall to play a rooftop party in Sin City on New Year s morning in 1981. Since then, despite a few changes to the group s members, the Hoodoo Gurus have gone from strength to strength. Rendall moved on to the film industry, while Radalj formed another band. Brad Shepherd joined the crew on guitar, Clyde Bramley contributed his incredible skills as a bassist and Mark Kingsmith took over duties as a drummer. Bramley was later replaced by Rick Grossman and the resulting line up still stands today. The opening track from debut album, Stoneage Romeos, set the stage for thirty years of continued chart-toppers and sold out tours, the band s breakup and then powerball comeback. Honoured with the Australian Music Hall of Fame, the band has always been and still continues to be one of Australia s favourite rock n roll groups. Taking inspiration from classic artists such as The Cramps, T. Rex, Little Richard, The Ramones, Suicide, Gene Vincent, The Flamin Goovies, Nancy Sinatra, Gary Glitter, Bobby Gentry, The Sonics and others. After an impressive catalogue of hit singles and best-selling albums over the decades, a few years ago the Hoodoo Gurus embarked on their Dig it Up national tour, in which they included a line-up of their favourite artists and inspirations including The Sonics, Redd Krosss, The Fleshtones, Died Pretty and the 5,6,7,8 s, as well as their own hit songs. The Hoodoo Gurus are continuing to play as one of the nation s favourite music groups. You can catch them at The Gumball Music Festival, as well as a whole line up of other favourites and newcomers to the music scene. To find out more about the Hoodoo Gurus or The Gumball Music Festival, you can head over to www.gumball.com.au. Image: The Hoodoo Gurus. creative arts Vivienne Nelson art exhibition By Zack Phillips In January and February 2014, Michael Reid in Murrurundi will be hosting Vivienne Nelson s latest exhibition, Nature Morte from the supermarket. Michael Reid Gallery is located at Boyd Street in Murrurundi. Vivienne Nelson is a local Newcastle artist who has been painting and drawing for many years. She has been an art teacher in Fiji, and also trained the first art teachers in Fiji. She is also responsible for the art curriculum. Vivienne teaches drawing lessons to both children and adults, and continues to be inspired by the smallest of things around her in Newcastle. She has been in Newcastle for fifteen years concentrating on changing urban and industrial landscapes. She was trained at East Sydney Tech in the 1960s, and then moved to Fiji for the next ten years. A major influence on her work is David Hockney s drawings of streets, buildings and vegetables. Nelson is inspired by looking at shadows and boundaries, as well as looking at spaces between objects. Vivienne Nelson likes to rearrange elements of our world and create negative spaces and patterns. Nelson s 2013 exhibition Fences documented some fenced and some fenced-off buildings in Newcastle. She was interested in the formation of shapes and patterns that hurricane fences imitated. food & wine Festive market was a real Christmas cracker The recent Scone Festive and Summer Homegrown and Handmade Market has been hailed a huge success. The new market venue - the Uniting Church in Main Street proved a terrific venue, says market organiser Amelia Wilkinson. Forty stallholders were in attendance and the market was well attended with many people looking to grab last minute Christmas presents. A local creations fashion parade co-ordinated by fashion partner Marcody was well received by market goers as were the Homegrown and Handmade workshops: How to make a Christmas apron presented by Deb Fergusonn from Sew Scone and Seasonal Gardening Tips presented by Lynda Posa from new Murrurundi based nursery Plants on Pages. Live music was provided by Gillian Miles on piano and singer/performer Tori Vines whilst PowerFM were on site doing an outside broadcast from 9am. the equine trend & more Watch out - Canine Parvo is about! By Candace Russo - Pet Medical There is still a concerning number of dogs from Christmas and New Year that are dying from Parvo. Parvo is a normally fatal canine gastrointestinal virus. Muswellbrook and surrounding suburbs hold the record for having one of the highest incidences of Parvo in NSW. Last week we had a dog not up to date with his vaccinations that was vomiting and had diarrhoea. He tested positive to the disease and pulled through treatment but was critically ill for over a week in hospital. The dog had not left his owner s property and had not been introduced to any other dogs. The virus is highly-contagious, being commonly transferred via people s hands, shoes, bags and clothes. Dog-to-dog contact is not necessary for infection. Supermarket disinfectant used to clean clothes, house surfaces or your dog s belongings does not kill the virus; therefore you need a special product stocked only by vets. As it is impossible to clean every surface, vaccination is essential. We vets hate seeing dogs die from this 100% preventable disease. When you buy a puppy, take it to your vet to receive all three Parvo booster vaccinations which should start at 6 8 weeks of age. From then on, it is a simple and quick yearly vaccination. Scone Pet Parade 2012 Cliff Ellis a true blue Hunter Valley horseman By Brian Russell Thousands will have fond memories of Cliff Ellis, one of the Hunter Valley s most respected horsemen who passed away at Scone on the night of December 30, three days after his 87th birthday. For a quarter of a century until his retirement from the saddle in 2011, he was one of the leaders on horseback in the annual Horse Festival parade at Scone in May each year, an imposing fi gure, the epitome of the horseman and of the history of the horse in the Hunter Valley; a region in which he lived all his life. Denman born and raised on the family s dairy farm between that town and Jerrys Plains, Cliff was the second youngest of fi ve children of a great grandson of Thomas Ellis, a stockman who migrated from Devon in England in 1837 to manage the settlement established at Jerrys Plains under the name of Arrowfi eld - now home for thoroughbred breeding giant Coolmore, by one of the Upper Hunter s foremost pioneers, George Bowman. Cliff had eminent pioneer pastoralists on both sides as his mother descended from John Wood, a London commodities broker who moved to New South Wales in 1818. He squatted on 180,000 acres of country which he called Brundah Station southwest of what is Cowra. The town of Grenfel is on Brundah. John Wood was also one of the fathers of the Australian thoroughbred. In particular, he imported mares from Chile in South America which became the foundation of the horse breeding stock on Brundah and which no doubt can be found in some modern horses with colonial heritage. Educated at a small bush school, Cliff Ellis, because of the shortage of labour owing to the war, went to work on the dairy farm at 14 years of age. Fortunately for the horse world, the farm was sold in 1949 and he began more than fi fty years involvement following a love of the thoroughbred. The fi rst twenty were in the historic Widden Valley, the fi rst four breaking in and educating horses under Bill Harris at his family s Holbrook, then the home for the very good imported sire Persian Book. The balance was with the Flynns,Tom and his managing son Ross, at neighbouring Oakleigh and also Emu Vale, a holding accessed through the Widden Stud. It was managed for a time by Cliff. An outstanding source of good horses for over half a century in the ownership of Herbert Thompson, a member of the Widden Stud pioneer family, Oakleigh was developed through the efforts of Ross Flynn and Cliff Ellis from the early 1950s into one of Australia s most upmarket studs with the top sire being the importation Red Gauntlet. They pioneered modern methods of preparing yearlings for sale embracing feeding and handling from weaning and sale grooming which are practised by most major vendors today. In presentation the Oakleigh yearlings, many of them shown in the ring by Cliff Ellis, were the jewels of the Inglis Easter sales in the 1960s. Big moments in the life of Cliff Ellis while at Oakleigh included the win of a horse he bred and sold, the Jack Green (Sydney) trained Hua gelding Experience. Sound advice. Positive outcomes. We think that just about covers it! the equine trend & more Cliff Ellis a true blue Hunter Valley horseman By Brian Russell Continued from page 8 Johnno in track record time in the 1959 Scone Cup total prize money $1,550, his marriage to Jenifer Crockett in 1961 and his topping of the fourth day (small vendors) of the 1962 Easter sale with a Pirate King half-brother to Johnno. The price of 3,000 guineas ($6,300) was good money at the time. Johnno, by the way, became a celebrity again when, after being caught up in a major flood on the Hawkesbury, he swam some considerable distance to safety and was found sheltering on the verandah of a house. The Ellis family Cliff, Jen and their then 5-year-old son Tim, left the remoteness of Widden Valley in 1971 and he became the stud manager for England born Major James Mitchell, the owner of Yarraman Park, a stud farm at Scone which he acquired from famous jockey George Moore. Yarraman Park flourishes today under the management of Major Mitchell s sons Arthur and Harry. The wisdom of Cliff Ellis was very valuable for young horseman learning their trade at Yarraman Park. Two who went on to prominence as trainers are Guy Walter, a number-one Sydney trainer, and Murray Johnson. Murray flies the flag for Australia in America, a country in which one of his runners, Perfect Drift, finished third in the Kentucky Derby. A great joy for Cliff and Jenifer was entrusting into their care for foaling down and walking into a sire in 1994 of Sandy Tait s and Jill Nivison s Whiskey Road mare Whisked. A son of the Blushing Groom sire Nassipour, the foal subsequently raced as the gelded Tie the Knot out of the Guy Walter stables at Warwick Farm, winning 21 races,13 Group1s, and earning $6,212,835. He was one of a number of good horses delivered by Ellis after they left Yarraman Park and established an agistment complex Kingdon Farm, at Parkville near Scone, in 1979. The primary focus was the preparation and care of client s mares, growing their offspring and marketing yearlings. In1983 yearlings prepared by Cliff Ellis topped not only the individual price, but also the aggregate price at the Easter Sale. They also stood the sires Piccolino, Sungazer and Blazing Ruler and for about a dozen years Cliff lectured on the horse industry at the Scone TAFE. Retired to Scone in 2000, Cliff Ellis was a major contributor to Scone racing and breeding administration for a quarter of a century. He served on the race club committee for many years and was a foundation committee member of the Hunter Valley Bloodhorse Breeders Association. He was so highly respected, in 1987 he was awarded the Hunter Valley Bloodhorse Breeders Service to Industry Award, and in 1999 was the Scone and Upper Hunter Horse Festival VIP. He was also made a Life Member of the Scone Race Club. Cliff Ellis is survived by Jenifer, his wife for over fifty years, their son Timothy and his wife Rebecca, the daughter he always wanted. A funeral service conducted at St Luke s Anglican Church Scone on Tuesday January 7 was followed by private cremation. leisure & lifestyle Shake your weight off in 2014 Myth Busting Fads If you are overweight or carrying a few extra kilos, you may already have tried those fad diets advertised in magazines and on the internet. However, many of these diets can leave you feeling hungry and slow down your metabolism, making you more likely to suffer from rebound weight gain. This is because these diets frequently focus on low fat foods which are often higher in sugar or carbohydrates and low in protein. You may register weight loss on the scales, but be losing valuable muscle rather than fat. The Shake It Professional Weight Management Program can help you successfully lose fat while maintaining muscle. This convenient and simple to follow dietary program will help to keep you feeling full, decrease your appetite and limit those sweet cravings in order to facilitate successful weight loss. Look Good, Feel Great Losing extra body fat with the Shake It Professional Weight Management Program not only brings the benefit of looking good and feeling great, but can also help improve your energy levels, reduce your risk of developing many chronic diseases and encourage healthy ageing. It can also be a very rewarding and empowering experience. Benefits of Regular Support Keeping motivated and staying on track with your weight loss goals can be difficult to do on your own. Regular visits to your healthcare practitioner can often be the key to success in fat loss and feeling great. Six Easy Steps to Looking and Feeling Great 1. Consume two healthy meals per day consisting of a palm size portion of protein and three handfuls of allowable vegetables. One handful of vegetables may be replaced by an allowable portion of fruit each day. 2. A high protein meal replacement once per day in the form of a shake, soup or bar. 3. Include two low carbohydrate protein snacks per day. 4. Incorporate healthy oils as a part of your daily diet. 5. Aim for 40 minutes of moderate intensity exercise four times per week, or as recommended by your practitioner. 6. Measure your ketones using Ketostix twice daily. Ketones appear in your urine if you are burning fat. By measuring ketone levels every day, you can monitor your fat burning in real time! Move It to Lose It Exercise is an integral part of any type of weight loss program. It has a beneficial impact on appetite, and provides long-term health benefits. Under the guidance of your practitioner, aim for or build up to 40 minutes of moderate intensity exercise, where you are puffing but can still talk, at least four days per week. Don t Wait For Weight Loss - Do It Now. Achieving and maintaining a healthy weight is important for your overall health and is one of the best steps you can take in preventing many chronic health conditions. With the Shake It Professional Weight Management Program and the support of your Practitioner, achieving and maintaining a healthy weight is easy! Contact Scone Inspire Health today on 6543 3565.
