NMO LOGO WELCOME NOTE On behalf of MMSA - Malta, we are glad you chose Malta as your exchange destination! A Professional exchange in Malta provides you with the opportunity to work in the largest hospital on the island. However, our aim is not only to help you grow academically but also to welcome you in the MMSA family and allow you to embrace our diverse culture.
OVERVIEW Malta is a small country full of fun, welcoming people. An exchange in Malta not only contributes to your medical education but also gives you the opportunity to experience the wonderful Mediterranean culture!
HEALTH CARE SYSTEM Malta was ranked 5th in the world for its standard in medical care by the World Health Organisation (WHO). Health services are entirely free for Maltese citizens. That said, most foreign citizens have to pay, except for British passport holders for instance, since a reciprocal agreement for the provision of health care between Britain and Malta exists. Malta's health service is tuned by general taxation. Despite the fact there is no obligatory health insurance for Maltese citizens, all workers and employers must pay National Insurance on a weekly basis.
MEDICAL EDUCATION The MD course in Malta is one of the few which are still based on the British system, being only 5 years long. After these 5 years doctors start their 2 year foundation programme and ultimately continue their studies which vary depending on the specialty they are interested in.
TRANSPORTATION The main mode of public transportation on the island are buses. The daily travels to research institutes or hospitals would most probably not require the use of our public transport, as they would be walking distance from Mater Dei Hospital and the University of Malta.
SOCIAL PROGRAM Malta is extremely popular with tourists, especially in the Summer months (July and August). Our jam-packed social programme is designed to give you a feel of what Malta has to offer. The social programme includes a wide array of activities and outings including cultural outings to our sister Island Gozo, a Boat Party, enjoying a traditional Maltese meal in one of our many picturesque villages, visiting many beautiful beaches and much more! Although the cost of the Social Programme is not covered by MMSA, it is our priority to keep it as affordable as possible.
MUST SEE You can rest assured that Malta has something in store for everyone, be it culture, sandy beaches or nightlife. Being a small country, you can easily do a lot of sight seeing even during a short stay. Spending a month here will allow you to go off the beaten track and visit and see more than the average tourist would. Some recommended places to visit: - Valletta - Mdina - Ghajn Tuffieha - Gozo - Comino - Temples (Ggantija, Hagar Qim) - The Three Cities
CULTURAL DIFFERENCES - Driving on the left-hand side. - Be prepared for a lot of loud fireworks in the summer
OTHER IMPORTANT INFORMATION We have a 3-pin plug system, so an adapter would be useful for your exchange.
