Newsletter of Harbor City Wings Melbourne, Florida Gold Wing Road Riders Association Jun 2011 Ray has been very busy this month and at the time of the rap up of this newsletter, he had doctor visits. We are praying for good news and healing. With good riding weather upon us, we had an active month of May. We started with a visit to the Veterans Wall in Wickham Park. After presenting a Chapter wreath, some of us gathered for dinner at Frankies Wings. We had two Kick Tires, one at Jason s Deli and another Crane Creek Tiki Taproom and Grill. I can say that the taco s were great. Some of our members were able to join FL1 and FL2 in Ocala for their Poker Run. I don t believe we had any winners but all had a great time. How about that Shrimp attack! Some of us spent a Saturday morning riding up for Shrimps R Us. It never fails to please and provides a great ride to boot. We hope to see you at our events for June. On behalf or our Chapter Directors Ray and Dianne, I wish you well and great riding. Look forward to seeing Ray and Dianne at the Chapter meeting. Richard Mitts, Newsletter Editor. An older, white haired man walked into a jewelry store one Friday evening with a beautiful young gal at his side. He told the jeweler he was looking for a special ring for his girlfriend. The jeweler looked through his stock and brought out a$5,000 ring and showed it to him. The old man said, "I don't think you understand, I want something very special." At that statement, the jeweler went to his special stock and brought another ring over. "Here's a stunning ring at only $40,000," the jeweler said. The young lady's eyes sparkled and her whole body trembled with excitement. The old man seeing this said, "We'll take it." The jeweler asked how payment would be made and the old man stated, by check. " I know you need to make sure my check is good, so I'll write it now and you can call the bank Monday to verify the funds and I'll pick the ring up Monday afternoon," he said. Monday morning, a very teed-off jeweler phoned the old man. "There's no money in that account." "I know", said the old man, "but can you imagine the weekend I had?" 2

Safety Educator AND NOW A WORD FROM CAPTAIN SAFETY Multitasking, Multitasking, Multitasking The reason I bring this word up today, Multitasking has been in the news lately. So much so, that a lot of state s lawmakers are writing new laws to cope with this ever increasing phenomenon in our daily driving lives. It has come to the attention of them that this is causing numerous accidents which would not have occurred in the past. In the old days all we had to worry about was a Big Mac, a coke, and a fry. Today we have cell phones with text messaging, internet for weather reports and email, and people are actually doing this while driving at high speed. Add to the mix a little bit of makeup, the kids screaming in the car, food, drink, such as hot coffee (but if you do that you could win an $11 million lawsuit against McDonalds, and that is not a bad thing). And what about the GPS?, Some of the inexpensive models don t talk to you and you have to read the screen forcing us to take our eyes off of the road. Which gives us as motorcyclists a lot to be aware of, as well as focusing on the operation of the motorcycle to safely traverse over the roadway. We also need to be looking in the vehicles to see what is going on in that vehicle and possibly make maneuvers to avoid that person by creating a safety cushion around us. They may not be paying attention to you, therefore, make sure you are paying attention to them. Scan, Predict, Act. Also we have to be aware of vehicles hauling unsafe loads such as pickup trucks and construction vehicles, where things could fly off and be in our part of the road. This is one of the things an ERC course teaches, the proper way to swerve and avoid those objects in this type of situation. Another point to bring up, at this time, is that there are twice as many motorcycles on the road in 2007 as there were in 1996, and if there are twice as many motorcycles there are probably 3 times as many cars and trucks on the road and this includes Brevard County. It s not like the old days where there were so few vehicles, where a motorcyclist could have a lot of fun on the road and not worry as much about the overcrowding of our highways. Now we have motorcycles riding with XM radios, CB s, GPS, coffee mugs, cell sets, so we really have to think and focus about riding on two or three wheels on the road to stay safe. In closing please be careful and be aware of your surroundings for the safe operation of your vehicle while you are out there in this mess. As a side note, we are not saying that the devices listed above on motorcycles are a bad thing, but that How not to do a blind curve! we should always be aware and use these devices properly and safely, with attention to the road and the ever changing conditions is our number 1 priority. "Ahhhhh, tell me all about your day honey," his wife says. The husband looks at her and says, "Well.. I just did." - Three guys had to cross a lake. The first one prayed to God for the strength, he swam across the lake, but almost died 5 times. The second guy prayed to God for the strength and the tools, he made a boat, and rowed himself across the lake, he almost died 3 times. The third guy prayed to God for the strength, the tools, and the brains. He turned into a girl, walked 4 yards, and crossed the bridge. - Grandpa John was celebrating his 100th birthday and everybody complimented him on how athletic and well-preserved he appeared. "Gentlemen, I will tell you the secret of my success," he cackled. "I have been in the open air day after day for some 75 years now." The celebrants were impressed and asked how he managed to keep up his rigorous fitness regime. "Well, you see my wife and I were married 75 years ago. On our wedding night, we made a solemn pledge. Whenever we had a fight, the one who was proved wrong would go outside and take a walk." 5

Two Blondes With Hammers Lynn & Judy were doing some carpenter work on a Habitat for Humanity House. Lynn was nailing down house siding, would reach into her nail, Pouch, pull out a nail & either toss it over her shoulder or nail it in. Judy, figuring this was worth looking into, asked, ' Why are you Throwing those nails away?' Lynn explained, 'When I pull a nail out of my pouch, about half of Them have the head on the wrong end & I throw them away.' Judy got completely upset & yelled, 'You moron! Those nails aren't Defective! They're for the other side of the house. Did you hear about the two blondes who froze to death in a drive-in movie? They had gone to see 'Closed for the Winter.' A special thanks to our members who submit articles. We love the support and the good information. Send them to Richard Mitts rm32904@yahoo.com May I have your attention please!...
