Hi Fellow Gold Wing Lovers: 2009 what a year! The stock market decline, Obamanism, Leucretia s two surgeries, my surgery and retirement! We had 5 people close to us leave this life since Thanksgiving! One good thing about 2009 was we now have a very capable new Assistant Chapter Directors in Steve and Susanna Conrader eagerly awaiting to step up! Thanks guys!!! We hate even thinking about leaving the Canopy Road Cruisers. We fell in love with north Florida and all of you new friends! But age and all our family being in central Florida makes it logical to move back to central Florida. But we aren t gone yet, lots to do, have to sell our home and properties here before we leave! That could take some time? Now we have a brand new year to work with, I hope it s a great year for you and yours!! We re not far from the date of our annual Rally at Lake Talquin. Hope it s our best yet! The State Rally and then the National Rally, Wing Ding, in Iowa. Hope we can take a large showing from our chapter, so far seven have said they will attend. If you want to join the fun let us know, the more the merrier! Hope you have a great and Happy New Year in 2010! Until Then Ride Safe and Enjoy the Ride, Lenton and Leucretia Stephens A.D.D. Report From: Nate & Danelle Kinion We hope everyone had a good Christmas and New Years and now we start a new year with 2010. Can you believe that we have already lived through 10 years in the 21 st Century? This year we will be making an effort to get a Motorist Awareness Coordinator for every Chapter in Florida. We lost two this year which brings us to 10 and that is only ¼ of the Chapters in Florida. This is a very important position for helping to save lives. We will be putting on a MAD presentation on Sunday morning at the CD Conference and we hope all of you MAD Coordinators and anyone who might be interested in becoming one will attend. This is starting off to be a good year. We have three new Chapter Directors and ACDs for all but two Chapters in the Panhandle. Nate and Danelle
TODAY IS A GIFT THAT S WHY IT S CALLED THE PRESENT Wings Over the Smokies Ed and Peggy went to the WOTS rally in Fletcher N.C. We were the only members from our chapter to attend the event, but met many nice folks there. The weather cooperated for all but one day the day we had the ride to Lake Lure and a boat tour. Frogg Toggs all the way, but a fun adventure. The movie Dirty Dancing was filmed there, and the community, not forgetting the impact this film had on their tourism, held a memorial service for Patrick Swayze the week before the rally. How nice for the community to remember his contribution to the area. There was also a waterfalls ride that we did not take as it conflicted with the Lake Lure tour. There were approximately 30 vendors, but the crowds were considerably smaller than in previous years. It was reported that less than 4,000 people had registered, whereas this event in past years could expect perhaps 10-15 thousand. Kudos go to the NC State Director who kept the closing ceremonies to 1 hour 5 minutes. He knows everyone wants these to be short and sweet and it was! Two North Carolinians won the Goldwing w/trailer and the Silverwing. Following the rally we proceeded to Balsam, NC (right out of Waynesville) where we went to the chapter meeting for the Waynesville group at Fat Buddies barbeque. There were probably 60+ people in attendance, a really good safety lesson on how to safely pass 18 wheelers from Stan, the member who has over a million miles safe driving one of those rigs. They had some interesting rides planned, however we were moving on but look forward to visiting with the chapter next year. By the way, Stan operates Mountain Trikes there in Balsam. Sweet Potato Festival Ocilla, Ga was the sight of the Sweet Potato Festival and parade Halloween weekend. Ed, Peggy, Marvin and Jo-Nell were there for the entire festival, while others from the chapter dropped by for a Saturday visit. The attendees have thinned considerably from past festivals, but there was good representation in the parade of about 100-150 motor cycles. Many threw candy to the kids who really look forward to that! The Chamber of Commerce has taken over the festival for the first time and promised improvement next year. They hopefully will bring the band back we have had in the past, and offer, again, free boiled peanuts. The fee had been raised this year with much less offered. Believe me the Chamber folk got an earful from all the old-timers who have attended this festival for many, many years, thus the promise of improvement announced at the closing of the weekend. A good time was had sitting around the campfires at night sharing memories of past adventures. There are some nice restaurants in the area so no one left hungry. We look forward to next year!
