September, 2014 Riveting Reflections The fall streaming season has finally arrived. Most camp grounds should have plenty of room to accommodate your next adventure. Make sure that your heater is working or you might freeze overnight! Our neighbor was down in Oregon camping last weekend at 5000 feet and had 25 degrees in the morning. BRRRR! The Road America Campout at Elkhart Lake starts on September 12. We don t get back to Wisconsin until Saturday night so we won t be able to join this great rally at a race track. The Elkhart Lake Vintage Festival is a great setting for a rally. There is a great vintage car expo with some outstanding restored cars. The Apostle Island rally, Washburn, Wisconsin starts on September 19. There are a lot of things to do in the great north woods. There will be a business meeting and installation of new officers. Whew, passing of the crown of power! Teri and I are looking forward to seeing everyone again. Our woods have offered up a spot for parking the camper and planning is under way for a shed to park the Airstream. Once in place, we will have space for those of you who travel to the Northwest and need an overnight spot to stay. It truly is paradise. Following the rally a caravan will head to the wilds of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. That will be another Ed adventure. I am sure it will be a fun time for all. See you Streaming down the road. Attached is her obituary. Helen Darina Lindroth Helen Darina Lindroth, 89, of Grand Forks, ND, passed away on Friday morning, August 29, 2014 at her home in Grand Forks, ND. Helen Darina Slusar was born October 18, 1924 in Tabor Township to John and Helen (Bakalar) Slusar. She was baptized, confirmed and married in Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Warren. She attended Boxville School and graduated from Warren High School in 1942. She graduated from the Minnesota School of Business, Minneapolis, MN on March 26, 1943. She then worked at the Twin Cities Ordnance Plant until her marriage to Harlan Ortel Lindroth on May 12, 1946. They lived in Grand Forks from 1945 to 1949 when they moved on the farm near Warren. In 1970 they moved back to Grand Forks. She worked at Kedney Warehouse from 1952 to 1960 and at the Grand Forks Air Force Base from 1960 to 1978. From 1978 to 1986, she helped take care of her grandsons. They retired in 1986 and spend winters in Fort Myers, FL and traveled in their Airstream trailer in the summer. Darina continued traveling with her Airstream until she turned 80 years old. They were active in the Wally Byam Caravan Club, an Airstream trailer club. She held offices at the Unit, Regional and International Level. She also was a member of the Elks Lodge in Fort Myers and volunteered there until the last few years. She was a Lifetime member of the Warren American Legion Auxiliary. She was a member of Calvary Lutheran Church, Grand Forks and Messiah Lutheran Church, Fort Myers. She liked to volunteer, until her health and loss of vision prevented her from doing so. Her favorite things to do were to go fishing up at Morson, Ontario, in the summer. She enjoyed playing cards with her many friends in Grand Forks and Fort Myers and traveling. She is survived by her daughter Barbara (Richard) Wessling of Grand Forks, ND; two grandchildren, Jon (Erin) Wessling of Maple Grove, MN and Chris Wessling of Eden Prairie, MN. Also survived by two great grandchildren, Jacob and Sophia. Brother: Ernest Slusar and Sister: Jeanette Ohnstad and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Harlan in 1995, one brother Maynard Slusar, and one sister Catherine Slusar. Obituary courtesy of DuBore Funeral Home, Warren, MN

Reflections in Aluminum By Steve Piotrowski While I was riding a bus at the Region Rally in Winnipeg, Manitoba going to one of the events, the tour guide asked if this was a reward trip for the Big Shots in the club. I told him no, it was a Region Rally open to all members. Then I asked him why he referred to us as Big Shots. He said all of you have President, First Lady, and other titles on your badges so I figured this was a trip for the Big Shots. This conversation got me thinking about why we wear badges. Is it to show off our past rank or to make it easy to have conversations by giving the name and location of our fellow Airstream travelers? Think about the new person coming to an event for the very first time and looking around the room. If it seems like the only ones who show up for events are the Past Presidents, their spouses and the current officers, will the new member feel welcome? If it looks like everyone at the event is a Big Shot, do the new members feel like equals? Do they really feel like they belong? Or could we be making them uncomfortable with our Big Shot badges? This year I am wearing a badge that says Past President. I wear it because I am in the office of immediate Past President. Beginning September 17 th, I am going back to my Original Member Badge. It identifies me as a member of our great Wisconsin Unit, and doesn t portray an arrogant attitude of being more important than other members of the club. I realize there is a lot of effort that goes into holding office, especially the higher offices. Perhaps it is time we honor that effort and dedication by giving them the privilege of wearing a colored badge that indicates they served as Regional or National Officers. This change would make it easier for members to recognize who is a current officer. I know that traditionally many organizations honor all Past Officers in this way. Does continuing to do so label our Club as out of date? This is just my opinion, but I would love to hear from others regarding this or any other issue. Thanks for reading. UP Caravan Update September 21 27, 2014 Plans for the caravan have progressed and at last report 14 trailers were signed up! It has been decided that the first night s stop will be at Curry Park in Ironwood, Michigan. The folks at Curry Park had advised earlier that access was difficult due to road construction, but that situation has been resolved. Jane Carmichael has made reservations for supper at The Liberty Bell Chalet at 5:30 PM (Central Time) in Hurley, Wisconsin (only about a mile west of Curry Park.) They will have an area reserved for 20-25 people. The Bell Chalet is an Italian restaurant, with a varied menu. It is known for the Caesar Salad for 2. (Feeds 4, Jane says!) The attached Italian market is closed on Sundays, but they said they will open it for us if we ask the wait staff. The store has a wonderful selection of meats, cheeses, oils, pastas, etc. (Jane plans to stock up on balsamic vinegar.) 5th Annual Road America Rally Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin September 12 14, 2014 Photos by Vicki Engelstad The Fifth Annual Road America Rally, ably hosted by Don & Kay Stenz, was another in a long string of successes. The weather could have been a little more cooperative (like, no rain!) but it was good most of the time. Ed is back towing the Sovereign after giving the Traveler to Liz & Scott... Is it gonna fit? One of the great things about the Vintage Sports Car Drivers Association meeting (with which this rally coincides) is the fantastic collection of old sports cars to be seen. (If a tornado hit Elkhart lake, several insurance companies would be wiped out!) Wisconsin Unit contingent at Road America race course. Now that s a proper motor car! Under the awning with Ed. Handy rain or shine! Sittin on the corner, watching all the cars go by... Fenders optional at extra cost... Thanks, Don & Kay, for another great Road America rally! (And Vicki thanks for the great pictures!) 5
