Minutes of the Jenison Historical Association October 20, 2016 Present: Ken Williams, Yvonne Williams, Linda Droog, Barb Semeyn, Mary Raper, Sandy Wensink, Liz Timmer, Nellie DeLaat, Ronnie Aungst, Gene Kort, Mike Timmer, Ron Villerius Association /Museum Business Approve October Agenda: Motion to accept as presented was made by Yvonne and Mike. Carried. Approve September minutes: Ronnie and Ron motioned to accept as written. Carried. Treasurer s Report: Motion to approve as written was made by Gene and Ken. Carried. Maintenance Report: Mike reported his work on the main stairs railing and the front storm door work is completed. Also hung some pictures on second floor and replaced light bulbs. Curator/Historian s Report: Ken shared pictures of our River boat trip. Color was later than normal this year, cool and cloudy. Good time had by all. Shared past pictures of Haire s Landing and the archeological finds there recently. Seaverlink.wordpess.com. is a site for our reference. Yvonne was able to view first hand a painting of the Landing that is in the GR Public Museum. It was donated in 2014. Questions were raised if we might be able to get it on loan for future displays. Yoke was cleaned up by Gene and is now hung up in the attic. Stained Glass Window from 1 st Jenison CRC has been donated in a special frame on rollers. We received an identical reverse painting on glass that matches the one in our reception area. It was donated by a woman in Grandville. A wringer wash stand has been given on loan by Cordy Crawford. Our stump fence on the west end has caved in due to natural causes. Discussion followed about posting a sign to keep off the fence. Asked Mike to research. Township Representative s Report: Ron shared that the township board will be polling the public whether to sell the 200 Baldwin Street property for retail use (Starbucks is interested) or use for public purposes. Ron suggested that now is the time to go back to the township with past ideas of wanting to place historical markers in that area, possibly a replica of the Jenison Mill by the fountain and also a directional sign at the corner of Chicago Dr. and Main St. Ron volunteered to get this added to the township board meeting agenda. Liz, Sandy and Ronnie will attend the next Township Board meeting. Acquisitions Report: Barb reported we do have several items to be entered. (See above) Cleaning and Upkeep: Cleaning continues now that the office is about finished. Yvonne asked that Mike look into evaluating how to make the doorbell more easily heard on the main floor. Review Master Plan/Projects: Files Update: Mary shared on her progress with reorganizing the files and audio tapes, maps, fire proof categories and photos. Ronnie and Yvonne have been assisting her. October Open House: We had 3 visitors at our Tuesday Open House and 23 after our Boat Ride on Saturday. We sold out our 130 tickets but only 121 showed up so we made an extra $90 profit. Liz has confirmed our reservations for next year s boat trip for October 14. Community Expo: Liz is all set for that but still needing assistance getting the Now and Then picture board set up. Nellie and Liz will man the table. Mike, Gene and Ken will bring the displays from the museum to the high school. Holiday Open House: Barb reported the Village is all set to go as well as many new decorations for the trees. Dates for the decorating are set for Saturday, November 12 and Tuesday, November 15 starting at 930 a.m. The boxes will need to be brought down from the attic before then. Election Nominations: We will be voting for 4 trustee positions next month. Those nominated are Liz, Nellie, Mike, Gene and Mary. 2

Remembrance Plaque: After much discussion on what guidelines should we use, it was decided by general consensus that this idea would be dropped at this time. Hands On Items : It was suggested that some of the duplicate items be designate as items that can be handled with color marker or tag. 2017 Calendar/Special Events/Attractions: Senior Center Bus Tour suggested for June. Senior Center has a bus that seats 22. Split cost with them. We would give a guided tour of the area. Ken suggested a trial run with our group. We will need to get back to them by March so they can advertise it in their Newsletter. Pumpkin Decorating Contest Liz presented an idea to involve kids for next year. This idea will be revisited as the date approaches. Future Open House Topics It was suggested that we start a running list during the year (add to monthly agenda) ideas for future topics. Tonight s topics were *art displays and possibly combining with the Grandville Historical group to coordinate our open house with the School House there on a special occasion. Other Business It was suggested that we could try spraying Ortho Home Defense around the foundation and front porch to help decrease the spiders and other insects/bugs in the house. Sandy volunteered to take care of that. 2017 Meeting Schedule was posted for the third Thursday of each month with the exception of December, when no meeting is scheduled.. 3
