INTERNATIONAL WORKCAMPS PROGRAM- 2018 1.0 ABOUT THE ORGANISATION UVIKIUTA is a Youth development organization that values volunteerism as a tool for sustainable development. The organization was established in 1983 to respond to the needs of young women and men to raise their living standards through developing and enhancing social and economic capacities. Our goal is to contribute to build sustainable and self-reliant communities through providing holistic experience that broaden minds, expand horizons and empower youth and their communities to realize their full potential as productive, responsible and caring citizens. UVIKIUTA-Tanzania is one of the founder members of the Eastern African voluntary service Network (EAVS-Network), formally EAWA-Net, Long term partner with Service Civil International (SCI), the ALLIANCE, and NVDA. 3.0 SHORT TERM VOLUNTEER PROGRAM (International Work camps): It is a unique cross cultural experiences program that connects people from around the world with local communities in Tanzania. The program offers a powerful vision built on our belief that volunteers, young people and local hosting communities has a vital role to play in development and in building a more just and sustainable world community. The program is a tool to demonstrate that, living and working together is not only possible but also rewarding. In this program we see the possibility of program participants and the hosting communities exchange experience, and thus gain in-depth knowledge of other Social, Cultural and economic realities of the world. 3.1 General Participation Conditions: a) Application: Application will be received only through sponsoring/sending organization(s) in the country of applicants resident at latest one week before the starting date of the project. Participants will be accepted only when free placements are available. b) Duration of the program: Most Workcamp last for a minimum time of 2 weeks and 3 weeks maximum. However Volunteer can apply for more than one project and stay longer in the country. c) Visa: Generally citizens of most Countries need visa to enter and stay in Tanzania. For this particular program Participants are required to have business visa. This type of visa is valid only for 90 days and cannot be extended. Volunteer/ Participant can obtain this visa on arrival at the airport upon presentation of an official invitation letter from UVIKIUTA.. d) Age: 18 years and above. No age limit. Younger Participants can be accepted provided that they are accompanied by their parents or an authorized guardian(s) e) Family, group, Senior, couples and disabled Participants: Families, groups, couples, seniors and those with disabilities are encouraged to join the program. However they should contact us in advance through their sponsoring organizations for proper environments that fit their special needs. f) Official Language: The official communication languages of this program are English and Kiswahili. Each applicant need to have basic of either language for effective participation in the project. The physical environment of school buildings and school grounds is therefore looks like a key factor in the overall health and safety for students, staff, and visitors. School buildings and grounds must be designed and maintained to be free of health and safety hazards, and to promote learning. Academic and other general development performance of depend on various factors like sanitation, safe water supply, healthy air quality and safe playgrounds, among other issues that relate to the physical environment of schools. Extracurricular activities are also important contributing factor because kids and teens can benefit through personal, educational, and even social means. Being involved allows the student to learn about the skills and talents they already have and can teach them new ones such as time management, organization, and prioritizing skills. This project is organized in cooperation with Uzi Island community to address the needs outlined above hence contribute the well-being and development of Kids and teens. Activities Volunteers are expected to participate in the following listed activities: Renovation and painting of school classrooms Drawing symbols that simplify reading and learning for lower classes Establishment of garbage disposal sites including trash bins in the classes and provide education on how to separate and dispose garbage. Organizing extra-curricular activities to the kids and teenagers (7-17 years old) after school hours. This could be sports, games, English Language, arts, crafts, remedial class most for mathematics etc. (depending on volunteers interest and skills). You will have a great opportunity for educational and cultural exchange activities with the volunteers in the team, Local community members etc. This will include Cultural nights, educational tours/visit, workshops, debates, cultural 2018: UVIKIUTA Workcamp Program/Booklet Page 3

shows/exhibitions, Community engagement activities, Kiswahili language class and many other options from you and other volunteers menu. Accommodation Volunteers will be accommodated in a common residential house in the community. Electricity and clean water will be available. Be ready to sleep on the ground of course with mattress, sharing room with other 3-4 volunteers of the same sex (No mix). Pay attention on the information sheet on what you need to bring for your accommodation. Food Trying a variety of foods from other cultures is part of UVIKIUTA s philosophy for an authentic experience in Tanzania, and may be both fun and challenging. Food on our projects generally reflects the local cuisine. Some foods that are part of a regular diet at your home country may not be available during the project. Vegetarians are accommodated and vegetarian meals will be available. The house will have a permanent kitchen staff, however- volunteers are expected to provide hand in meals shopping, preparation and dish washing. Vegetarian meals will be available. Location Dimani community is Located along the high way from Stone town to South and East coast of Zanzibar Island. It is approximately 15km from the town center. This location and distance make it very accessible to most important facilities including shopping, health facilities and Banking. The community can be accessible by both public and private transport. It is a rural community close. Its isolation from the city makes it very quiet, relaxing and people can enjoy ever green coconut plantations, various spices without forgetting hospitality of the local people. Leisure activities This is a perfect location to take an advantage of what the nature offers for our free time. Possibilities are:- Exploring Zanzibar historical, natural and cultural sites. These include museums, local markets, stone town, etc. Enjoy wildlife and marine life. Jozani forest National Park, Blue safaris swimming, tour to small islands, variety of water sports, spice tour among many other options. Remarks (Other Information) The participation fee for this project is 250 (EURO) or equivalent Tanzanian shillings. This fee is different from the amount paid to the sponsoring/sending organisation during your application process. There are many good examples during the National independence struggle and after the independence. Women are well known on how powerful they can use their voices to speak up for others, whether it's advocating for their child in school, speaking up and ensuring quality care for sick family member, or just being a voice of encouragement and inspiration for others. This project recognizes the role of women in the society by encouraging young women to take steps towards learning through stories of champion women to increase their ability speak up, speak out and take an active role in transforming their own communities. The project mail goal is to encourage young women that everyone has a voice and they have choice whether or not to use it to build a strong community. Activities A number of activities will be organized to realize objectives stated above. This will include:- Improvement of girls learning facility through class rooms painting and provision of garbage bins in the classrooms Social and cultural events (Young women s sports, Music, arts and exhibitions Meeting women in actions in various sectors of the society (Social, Political and economic) Symposium involving young women in the community Storytelling and story sharing by local young women, volunteers and inspiring women in the community on various areas like social, political and economic Educational tours to various organizations working on women issues Accommodation At the Local Youth hostel. Electricity and clean water will be available. The rooms are comfortable enough and you will share with other 2-3 volunteers. No mix of men and women, uncles for couples and it should be requested during the application. Food Three meals will be provided at the Youth hostel dining. Location The project will take place in Chamazi; it is the community in the outskirts of Dar es Salaam. Chamazi is one of those communities which are now developing to become urban center. However still enjoys its natural landscape where you can view some remained wild animals like monkeys, bush babies, rabbits and a good variety of birds. The community is located 30km south of Dar es Salaam city center. Leisure activities Geographically this part of the country offer variety of good options to visit including; Wild life safari (Mikumi National Park or Selous game reserve, Overnight in Bagamoyo (Swimming, historical sites seen and cultural tours). Children come with various gifts for their lives, their parents, community and the world. However due to various social, cultural and economic factors not all children manage to arrive at the desired destinations. Developing urban centers brings children from various social and economic backgrounds living and sharing. In this regard; it is very easy for children to adapt to another culture or having their dream crushed. Some Children has been negatively or positively affected by family relations, media, teachers environment around them etc. Dreaming Child is project aiming to discover and explore children s dreams and how they can possibly be supported to realize their full potential. The project will include four aspects:- Explore: Exploring various dreams among the children (Some kids want to be doctors, farmers, politicians etc. Understanding: Try to understand factors associated with their dreams, are they real, how they are walking in their dreams etc. Challenge: what challenges or limitation are they facing in realizing their dreams? Act: Possible support and actions required from Parents, Teachers and others in supporting the children to rich at their higher point. Activities Volunteers will be involved in a good number of activities to achieve the desired objectives of this project. This includes:- Social activities for children: Organize social activities for Children in the community (6-13 years) after schools hours. Collecting stories: Dreams of Children; who do they want become in future, why and how they planning to be there, possible barriers etc. Inspiring: To organize activities which will give the kids power and courage to move forward; this could be through playing roles of the position they would like to be, talent shows, listen or watching successful stories from the volunteers, community members or through videos Dream stories record: Collect stories and photos of the kids with their dreams to be share by their parents and school to support the kids to realize their life wishes through various social and academic initiatives. Accommodation Volunteers will be accommodated at the Youth accommodation in the community. Basic accommodation facilities will be provided. Expect to share rooms with or other volunteers from the same or other projects. (No mix of different sex in the rooms). Volunteers relatives and friends can visit or staying over upon special approval. Bring with you; Mosquito net, Bed sheets (at least 2 pieces) and pillow if you prefer one, Towels, Rubber mattress and Mosquito repellent Food Food will be provided only at the house for the entire period of the project. Volunteers should expect to have three meals a day. The house will have a permanent kitchen staff, however- volunteers are expected to provide hand in meals shopping, preparation and dish washing. Vegetarian meals will be available. Location This will be a great opportunity to be outside city life. Mbande is located about 35km South of Dar es Salaam city center. Although urbanization process is going fast, this community still enjoys some natural environment including landscape, vegetation, some wild animal (Monkeys, rabbits, and bush babies) and birds. Leisure activities This is a perfect location to take an advantage of what the nature offers for our free time. We have a possibility to spend time in South beach, Overnight in Bagamoyo town (Swimming, historical site see and eco-tourism), Overnight in Mikumi National Park (2 days, one night safari viewing animals as well Masai cultural tourism, Selous game reserve (Wild life safari including camping safari, walking safari among many other options). 2018: UVIKIUTA Workcamp Program/Booklet Page 2

Please note that, you will have less work in morning hours and more busy in the afternoon due to the nature of this project. It is a fast growing suburb due to development expansion projects happening in the city center converting residential to industrial areas. The place can be accessible by public transport famous known as daladala connecting the community with the most important parts of Dar es Salaam. There is also option to use private transport (Taxi), private card owned by host families etc. A shops and markets are available where most basics can be obtained. Description of the Project In many countries Tanzania included there are unfortunately many children who have been abandoned to their own luck, born in homes with no love, abused, or suffer poverty and sickness. These children need a loving heart, attention, education and friends who can help them find a better life full of opportunities, be successful and most important have happiness life. Children: Our future is a project designed with the aiming of increased overall wellbeing of the children in Msufini community and mostly those in who lives at the orphanage center. Children are coming from socially challenging conditions where volunteers are needed to offer love and attention they need at such crucial time in their lives. Project Activities Activities of this project will depend very much on the interest and the skills of the volunteers. Volunteers should expect to participate in:- Cleaning: Painting dormitories and study rooms, garden and compound maintenance Teaching/ Directing: teach English language, Help with home works Sanitation (teaching and helping in personal hygiene) Organize games, drawing, and other creative extracurricular activities Care for those who cannot go to school Assist with daily kitchen duties More activities related to the project theme might be added- flexibility is necessary. 1

Study part Participants of this project will have an opportunity to experience life with kids at the children s home as well at their host families. Various discussions and educational visits on Children issues will be organized with the aim of increased understanding various issues affecting Children. Volunteers are requested to bring information from their home countries for sharing. Accommodation Volunteers will be accommodated at the Youth accommodation in the community. Basic accommodation facilities will be provided. Expect to share rooms with or other volunteers from the same or other projects. (No mix of different sex in the rooms). Volunteers relatives and friends can visit or staying over upon special approval. Bring with you; Mosquito net, Bed sheets (at least 2 pieces) and pillow if you prefer one, Towels, Rubber mattress and Mosquito repellent. Volunteers with food allergies (e.g., nuts) must inform the organisation about the existence and severity of the allergy. Three meals per day are provided to the Volunteers at the Youth accommodation. Meals in transit between airports and to/from Project, during tourism or outside designated project area are volunteer s responsibility. No reimbursements will be made for volunteers who miss their included meals. Location and Leisure activities The project is located in the outskirts of Dar es Salaam City (about 30km to the South). The community can be accessible by both public and private transportation. Basic facilities like convenience shops, Local markets, hospital, Police station, and recreational/social facilities are available. Participant who loves nature and walking will perfectly enjoy this location of the project. Other options for weekends are:- Dar es salaam tour: Museums, Beach and historical/cultural sites Overnight in Bagamoyo town (Swimming, historical site seen and eco-tourism) Overnight in Mikumi National Park (2 days, one night safari viewing animals as well Masai cultural tourism, Selous game reserve (Wild life safari including camping safari, walking safari among many other options. It is always cheaper and even fun to do these activities with other participants as a team. You might want to wait until the orientation day to plan together. If needed we can provide some recommendations for companies which has been providing services to our Previous participants over the years with affordable rates while quality, safety and security prioritized Remarks (Other Information) You are expected to pay a program participation fee of 250. Participation fee does not cover the cost of medical/health services, all types of insurances, cost of transport to the community after the orientation, Business visas fee, airport drop off on departure day, pocket money, free/leisure activities and other personal expenses. Description of the Project Music and Arts expression has been used for ages in various audiences as a vehicle to deliver messages. Its role in human life needs no overemphasis since it affects all aspects of human kind. Peace through Arts and music project is expected to bring volunteers with peace messages to the society through the universe language of music and arts. This project aims to develop and create meaningful events and performing arts programs embodying peace through culture, the natural outcome of creative people collaborating to achieve peace in the world. Through music and arts the project is expecting to increase awareness of positive use of the tool that build cultural bridges of peace. Description of the Project The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), otherwise known as the Global Goals, are a universal call to action to end poverty, protect the planet and ensure that all people enjoy peace and prosperity. Grassroots ownership of the SDGs is one of the factors which will lead to the desired results. In this regard, awareness creation forms part of change -oriented communication in which all the sustainable development goals (SDGs) and target are communicated to community groups in response to the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. In responding to this, Irish and Tanzania Participants will become stimulated to contribute their own ideas and energies, thus contributing to live debates on sustainable issues. This will be realized through community events, interactive sessions on the SGDs and their targets, capacity building for community stakeholders and dialogue with local Government authorities in relations to SDGs and the targets. Project Activities Participants will be involved in the following outlined activities:- Community Service (Hands-on activities): Planting tree is a great way to help sequester carbon emissions. Selected native trees species will be selected; this helps to preserve the environment and biodiversity. (UVIKIUTA and KVDA) For the third year we are organizing this project after the successful stories from last years. This project will be hosted in 2 weeks in each country as follows:- Kenya: The town is along the road between Kisumu and Kakamega and only five kilometres north of the equator. Vihiga municipality has a population of 118,696. As a county, Vihiga has its administrative headquarters in Mbale; the people living in Vihiga primarily identify themselves as "Maragoli" and speak a language called Maragoli. This language is quite distinct from other Luhya ethnic groups. Tanzania: ChakeChake is part of Pemba Island, known as "The Green Island" in Arabic (is an island forming part of the Zanzibar archipelago lying within the Swahili cost in the Indian coast. With a land area of 988 square kilometers (it is situated about 50 kilometers to the north of Unguja, the largest island of the archipelago. The Island is accessible through fast ferries and flight from Zanzibar, Dar es Salaam and Tanga towns. All necessary things you might need in a small town are available.
