I would take any trip where Abbas is the faculty leader! C H R I S T I E F R A S E R, 71, T URKEY S UIT- C ASE S EMINAR, 2013 Faculty Leader ABBAS MILANI was born in Iran into a Muslim family and educated by French nuns and Jesuit priests before leaving Iran as a teen for the U.S., where he lived for the next 11 years in the San Francisco Bay Area. After earning his PhD, he returned to Iran in 1976 and taught at Tehran University. In 1986, he left Iran once more and has lived in the Bay Area ever since. As a young man, Dr. Milani was involved in secular opposition politics and, as a result, has had close encounters with many of the current leaders of the Islamic Republic of Iran. Throughout his adult life, Dr. Milani has focused his studies on the culture, politics and society of the Middle East, particularly Iran. His lectures during our program will cover Turkey s history from Herodotus to the Ottomans, the rise and fall of the Ottomans, Ataturk and modern Turkey, and today s Turkey from novelist Orhan Pamuk to the rise of moderate Islam. Our Turkey program is one of Travel/Study s most popular and for good reason. We visit the most important cities, Ankara and Istanbul, taking in their richest and most extraordinary archaeological treasures and ageold architectural masterpieces. We also wander about the dramatic, other-worldly landscapes of Cappadocia and we explore incredible Byzantine, Hittite, Roman and Ottoman sites. But honestly, the very best part of this exceptional program is our five-day cruise along the Turquoise Coast aboard luxurious, privately chartered gület sailboats an incomparable coastal cruise that s a delightful combination of hidden coves and hilltop ancient ruins. You ll love this trip; it s unlike any other, I promise! BRETT S.
