MEET THE INSTRUCTOR NICK RAINS LEICA AKADEMIE PRINCIPAL INSTRUCTOR Nick Rains has been a professional photographer for the past 33 years during which time he has worked for well known publications such as Australian Geographic, Outback, GEO, Sports Illustrated, TIME, BBC and many others. Nick has worked in all genres of the industry covering sports, news, celebrities, travel and commercial but now concentrates on documentary / photography and over the past 20 years has published 15 photography books. More recently Nick has become involved in training other keen photographers, sharing his wealth of experience and knowledge in addition to shooting images and writing travel and photography articles.
14 MAY - DAY ONE DUBROVNIK Group arrival day. You will be met at the airport and taken to your accommodation right in the heart of the ancient city of Dubrovnik. We meet at 1900 hours for dinner and a chance to get to know the other guests.
15 MAY - DAY TWO DUBROVNIK Spend the day camera in hand discovering all that Dubrovnik has to offer. Explore the old city with its narrow streets, street performers, diverse architecture, and well-preserved medieval walls. You ll have some free time to do some sightseeing in the afternoon before meeting up for a late afternoon shoot. The medieval walls offer spectacular views of the city, the sea, islands and mountains and we ll use this vantage point to make the most of the light for some creative long exposures and blue hour shots.
16 MAY - DAY THREE MONTENEGRO We will take a day trip to Kotor in Montenegro with our first stop at the village of Perast for a boat trip to visit and photograph islands Our Lady of the Rocks and Sveti Djordje. Less than half an hour drive and we arrive to the old fortified port town. The Kotor itself is photographer s paradise. Churches, markets, narrow streets and squares are very photogenic. We will then return to Dubrovnik after dinner.
17/18 MAY - DAY FOUR AND FIVE DUBROVNIK AND HVAR Early risers will have the opportunity to capture the sunrise over the Adriatic coast from a city vantage point before we depart for the island of Hvar. A short ferry ride brings us to the sunny island where we ll spend the afternoon and evening wandering through the charming town of Hvar with our cameras. We begin the next day with a panoramic sunrise shoot before setting off for the western part of the island. Today we ll photograph some of the most scenic places on the island and traditional Croatian villages. We ll try our hand at creative seascapes and to experiment with long exposures in the evening.
19 MAY - DAY SIX HVAR AND SPLIT After breakfast and another chance to capture early light in the old town, we take the ferry to Split, another UNESCO world heritage site. We will spend a day discovering Split with its beautiful riviera, narrow streets and famous Cathedral of Saint Domnius.
20 MAY - DAY SEVEN SPLIT - KRKA NATIONAL PARK We will get up very early in the morning and drive for an hour to reach Krka. We will spend a day exploring and photographing Krka National Park, known for a series of seven waterfalls. In the south, Skradinski Buk waterfall is flanked by traditional watermills. To the north, a nature trail passes another striking cascade, Roki Slap, and the Krka Monastery, built above ancient Roman catacombs. Visovac Island is home to the 15thcentury Franciscan Monastery of Our Lady of Mercy.
21 MAY - DAY EIGHT SPLIT - TROGIRT You will have some free time to explore Split after a sunrise shoot and we will meet for lunch. Later we will drive to Trogir, a UNESCO town built on a small island. We will have dinner in a great restaurant there and return to Split after sunset.
22 MAY - DAY NINE SPLIT - WETZLAR After breakfast, we will transfer to Split airport and say goodbye to our local Croatian guide. We will fly to Frankfurt where we will be picked up for the 45 minute drive to the Ernst Leitz Hotel in Wetzlar. Dinner will be served in the hotel followed by an exploration of the Leitz Park campus.
23 MAY - DAY TEN WETZLAR - LEICA FACTORY - THE BIRTHPLACE OF MODERN PHOTOGRAPHY In the morning we will have a private guided tour of the Leica Factory where we will see the astonishing levels of craft that go into making cameras and lenses. In the afternoon we adjourn to the Leica Akademie building to review our images, and select our hero shots. Dinner will be in Wetzlar at a favourite Italian restaurant in the old town centre.
24 MAY - DAY ELEVEN WETZLAR - FRANKFURT Transfers to Frankfurt am Main will be arranged to coordinate with your flight times.

It could be hot or it could be cool. Bring light rain gear just in case, and something in case of chilly evenings. We will be walking a lot so decent shoes are a must.
