Springwater continues bicentennial events on July 2 & Townwide Yard Sale The Springwater Bicentennial Committee is hosting a townwide yard sale on Saturday, July 2, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The Springwater Town Board has authorized the committee to allow anyone who wants to display their wares on Main Street to use town-owned property. There is no fee for this event and all proceeds belong to the participants. The town wants all property brought in to be removed at the end of the day including any trash or garbage. The Springwater American Legion will also allow their property to be used with the same caveat that no trash or garbage is left behind. The Springwater United Methodist Church, 8001 South Main Street, will provide hot dogs, snacks, and beverages that day at a reasonable price. They are also accepting donations for their tables at the yard sale that day. Donations may be left in the St. Pauly Used Clothing donation box or call Terri White, 669-2104, for more information. Please mark items for yard sale and the ladies of the church will separate those items from the St. Pauly donations. Proceeds from the church yard sale go toward assisting youngsters in Springwater with getting book bags filled with the necessary school supplies when they start school again in September. This is part of the HandUp Committee s fundraising efforts to support young people, veterans and their families, and those in need throughout the year. Fundraiser for Mt. Vernon/Evergreen Cemetery Also on July 2, beginning at noon, the Mt. Vernon/Evergreen Cemetery Association will hold a chicken barbecue to raise funds for ongoing upkeep in the cemetery. The Springwater Fire Department has graciously allowed the association to use their facilities at 8145 South Main Street for this event. Cost is $9.00 per person. Takeouts are available. Baseball with the Rochester Cardinals Weather permitting, the Springwater Bicentennial Committee will host the Rochester Cardinals, a baseball team from Rochester, in an intra-squad nine-inning exhibition game at the Larry Canute Memorial Park, located behind the Springwater American Legion Post 905 at 7998 School Street, on Sunday, July. The Rochester Cardinals are part of the National Adult Baseball Association comprised of former collegiate and retired minor league players. Dansville ArtWorks announces 2016 Student Award winner Dansville ArtWorks Inc. is pleased to announce the recipient of its Student Award to Dansville Central s Leanne Camuto. Dansville ArtWorks established the $100 award in 2015 to recognize the efforts of a student who participated in the arts throughout their high school years at Dansville Central and intends to pursue a post-secondary degree in the visual, literary, or performing arts. Leanne Camuto is a visual artist with a vintage style. She came highly recommended by Ms. Pullen, Dansville High School art teacher and Idol by Leanne Camuto National Art Honor Society advisor, who describes Leanne as an old soul with a quiet, witty energy. Indeed, Camuto agrees that she is the girl born in the wrong time. She is passionate about the 50s and 60s, which is highly reflected in her work. She prefers to create in black and white, whether paint or charcoal, and enjoys taking artistic risks to show people who she is. Leanne has also participated in National Art Honor Society and currently holds the office of Vice President. She will pursue a degree in graphic design at the College of St. Rose in Albany. Dansville ArtWorks president, Nicole Alioto, states, It s crucial to foster the arts in our youth and provide venues in which their efforts can be appreciated and acknowledged. Canandaigua Lakefront Art Show to continue Lakefront Productions has announced that they have obtained a special events permit from the City of Canandaigua to continue the long-standing tradition of hosting a July art show in Kershaw Park in 2016. An art show has been held in Kershaw Park for over 42 years. In 2015, Lakefront Productions took over the arrangements and promotion of the art show at that location with only six weeks left to the show date after a previous promoter suddenly backed out and moved their show to another location. The 2016 art show has been renamed and will now be known as the Canandaigua Lakefront Art Show. The 2016 show will be on July 0 and 1 from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. both days, and admission is now free to the public. The show will have family activities, music, and a wide assortment of food vendors, including Nick Tahou Hots, Mark s Pizza, Soul Juicin, and more. Join area summer hikes with Springwater Trails Hiking with the Springwater Trails group is always an adventure summer, fall, winter, or spring. As we begin our fifth summer hike season there are many more adventurous and fun-filled hikes awaiting us this year, from Springwater to Canadice and Hemlock Lakes, Hi Tor in Naples, Stid Hill in Bristol, and beyond to other Finger Lakes locales. This year, each month has a scheduled Springwater hike in celebration of the town s bicentennial. Additionally, there are various other hikes planned in the Finger Lakes area forests, lake areas, and wild fields replete with wildflowers and scenic views. Countdown is on to Geneseo Summer Festival & Sidewalk Days The Geneseo Summer Festival, celebrating its 4th year, will be on July 8 and 9 in the Village of Geneseo. Olde Country Store to celebrate 1st anniversary with two-day BBQ On July 4, 2015, my daughters and I stepped into our newly purchased but truly old, Olde Country Store, opening its doors to the public for the very first time in just over seven years. Now, almost one year later, we look back at our life-changing journey, realizing the hard work, endless optimism, and the everyday support of our family, friends, neighbors, community, and customers. We were truly blessed, from the time we pulled our roots and left our familiar lives behind in Mainz, Germany, to the time of rebuilding in and near my hometown of Naples. On opening day, just a fraction of our over 189 candy bins were filled. The shelves where close to empty or nonexistent. We opened our doors knowing that this will be a long, steady ride in whatever direction our community, our hearts, and our instincts guide us. Every day was a new one of little expectation but much hope hope that we will always choose the right path through this new maze of life. Countless artists and crafts people walked through our door, sharing with us their creations as well as their hopes and dreams, until we began filling our walls and shelves with a unique collection of local crafts and goods. This 4th of July weekend will be very special for us we will have been in business for an entire year. During this time we ve met so many wonderful people and made so many new friends, simply through our daily routine. This particular weekend will be a weekend of thanks and gratitude. What better way to celebrate this than to have a special event for our one-year anniversary? Our event will include two days of BBQ featuring our local BBQ expert Bob-E-Que (Bob Fleishman) at a celebration price of $8.50 per meal. You can choose from pulled pork or roasted turkey on Kaiser roll with two sides (coleslaw and pasta salad), made freshly in-store by Jenny. We will have many local and very talented vendors in the upstairs of our store as well as our south side lawn. Taste testers will include: 4J s BBQ Sauce (Geneva), Woodstead s Hot Everything and Anything Sauce (Naples), and Heaven Scent s Jack Cheese (Cohocton). We are especially grateful to have Arbor Hill Winery & Grapery to help make our celebration extra special with taste testing of their local grape and wine-based products. Our two-day event is set for July 2 and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. with the BBQ starting at noon until sold out. Nature in the Little Finger Lakes A gathering we go Sauntering along the trail of a local waterfall gully with an armful asunder of downed and dead basswood bark for making cordage, I meet a couple and three children. The woman shows me her find: a rock that is shaped inexplicably like a human ear. She holds the shale up against the side of her head to demonstrate its caricatured likeness, and I laugh. The older girl at her side smiles when the woman tells me how they collect rocks shaped like body parts to take home and paint. We are building a rock person, she adds. Gathering is an instinct from our ancestral heritage looped like longing in our DNA. Those who go shopping are gathering (with money for trade), an evolution of our natural state of being; humans like collecting stuff. Take, for instance, the spritely child with his pockets full of stones, or my own propensity to fill my pockets with acorn caps. Gathering from the Earth is cherishing her many gifts, exploring her nooks and crannies; better yet, when doing so we are full of wonder and mindfulness. Have you ever gone looking for beach glass and at first you see none, but as you tune in to the color and form you begin to find bits of green and white rounded glass everywhere? Gathering is both an action verb (like when storm clouds gather), and a noun (as in a group of ladybugs). A gathering of crows is called a murder; a gathering of toads a knot; geese or sheep gathered are a flock. When people gather, as in we are gathered here today, it can be termed a mob, a congregation, a mass, an assemblage, a multitude, a constellation, or even just a gathering. But to gather is: to convene, to collect, to obtain, to acquire, procure, or attain. Gathering is doing; although gathering out in Nature somehow feels different. Wild gathering emanates an awareness more akin to the activity involved in meditation. Foraging is the act of gathering wild food. Many people go stalking the wild asparagus (Euell Gibbons style) and in some parts of the country, foraging has become a hipster means of reducing one s grocery budget. It s free food, after all, so long as you know how to properly identify what you are looking for. I go gather to get nettles, oyster mushrooms, chanterelles, sulfur shelf, and medicinal fungi. I gather St. John s Wort and Motherwort for making tinctures, mugwort and cedar for smudge. Picking wild raspberries and cloudberries is nearly rapturous! The wildcrafter s rule of thumb is: for every plant harvested, leave 10 behind. I also like to look for the grandmother plant of the tribe, and in their honor, leave an offering of thanks. But gathering anything be it shimmery pebbles or edible cattail shoots, or empty bird nests braided with lichen, fallen feathers, or failed butterfly wings is not allowed in public places, specifically state and county parks, without a permit, or, at the very least, permission. Broadly interpreted, anything found within a park is to be left in the park. New York City is currently having a problem with urbanites foraging food and fungi in the parks. (I have a windowsill full of illegal rocks!) Alongside Eelpot Creek I watch small minnows swimming in place, facing the current, mouths gaping and ready. The little fish are gathering food, come what may. Birds gather tufts of my dog s white hair to cushion their nests, worms to slurp up from my garden, bugs to devour from outside the horse barn. Some crows will even gather shiny objects of intrigue just to have them. I don t know what stones gather, other than moss. Mosses gather water, and maybe stones; mud wasps mud. The ash and maple and oak around my home gather sunlight. The squash in my garden gather nutrients with their roots through a delicate process of cation exchange. Turkeys gather beechnuts and acorns (called mast, the botanical name for seeds), nuts, berries, and vegetation for wildlife. Doing absolutely nothing, I gather oxygen, just by simply being. I m not sure if gathering is a natural, inalienable right, but evidence in the world around me seems to elicit a say so. In some places in our world, the gathering of basic needs such as water, or fuel to cook food, is an all-consuming daily chore. Miles are walked for water in Africa, sometimes twice a day. There is no time to gather rocks for play, or to build a rock person. Our Little Lakes are bountiful and abundant, but gathering requires respect for public lands, private landowners, and the environment. Anyplace we foray, we should give thanks for all the blessings and gifts this region provides. It seems so natural to want to take home a great find from the outdoors, and to even seek one out, but maybe what we really need to gather from Nature isn t the item or object that catches our eye at all? Maybe what we seek in such gathering is something far deeper than that.
