GWRRA CHAPTER FL2-F, GULF COAST WINGS PUNTA GORDA, FL FRIENDS FOR FUN, SAFETY AND KNOWLEDGE June 28, 2016 GARY AND SANDY WILLIAMS ARE ON THE ROAD AGAIN: Sandy has shared her travelogue for their current trip. They started on June 13. I will pass these on as I get them. You can also see her articles and photos on our website at http://gwrra-fl2-f.org/ We had the first 4 days of their trip in the June 21 newsletter, here are a few more days, the rest of the trip will follow next week. JUNE 17,2016 First of all I have to plead old age or the onset of senility as I wrote the wrong name of the restaurant that we ate at on June 16. We ate at Montero's and I would hate to have hundreds of people coming to Elizabeth City to eat and asking for a restaurant that doesn't exist. June 17 is our 49th wedding anniversary so I have a fun filled day planned for Gary and some of our happy little our group. Bruce & Lynda are touring on their own today as Bruce was stationed at the Coast Guard Base here in Elizabeth City many, many (how old are you Bruce) years ago. The weather forecast was for severe thunderstorms for most of the day and we had a half day deep sea fishing trip planned. I called at 8:00 and the fishing trip was still on so we headed out to visit the Wright Brothers Memorial in Kill Devils Hill, NC before our 11:00 fishing trip. In the early 1890's the Wright brothers had settled in Dayton, OH as proprietors of a small bicycle shop. They had always dreamed of the possibility of human flight and in 1903 on a small sandy beach near Kill Devils Hill, Orville flew for 12 seconds. It was not very long, but it was a beginning and this memorial recognizes that. It consists of a tall monument, a first flight Boulder and a fabricated bronze and stainless steel bi plane. Great stop and an opportunity to get another stamp in my National Park Passport book. After our visit to the memorial, we found out our fishing trip was cancelled as the sea was a little rough and high winds were forecast for the afternoon. We decided to drive down the outer banks to Cape Hatteras and the Lighthouse. Our first stop was the Bodie Island Lighthouse which was built in 1872 and is 165 feet tall. Another stamp in my National Park Passport Book.

Our next stop was the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse and the picture below is our little tour group by the lighthouse sign. This lighthouse was built in 1870 and at 198.5 feet tall, it is the worlds second tallest brick lighthouse. Right now you might be asking where the worlds tallest brick lighthouse is located ( and then you might not be asking that question). Well I googled and found that if I went to Swinoujscie, Poland I could see the tallest brick lighthouse. Again, another stamp for my book. It was now time for lunch at Dirty Dicks Crab House. Great lobster bisque. Now it was time to head north again and we made one last stop at the Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge Visitor Center. With this last two stop I have now obtained all of the stamps fir the National Parks, National Monuments and National Historic Sites in North Carolina. Whew! The wind picked up a little on our way north and the sky began to become overcast and we began wondering if we would make it back to the hotel before getting wet. We were within 17 miles of the hotel when it began to sprinkle. We figured if we didn't stop we wouldn't get wet so we kept going because we could see lighter skies to our left and we knew we were going to be heading left shortly. Right decision as our left turn got us out of the rain and to the hotel and we got the bikes all covered up for the night before the rain came down in earnest. Another wonderful and busy day. JUNE 18 2016 Today is June 18 and Jeff and Amy decided to go touring on their own. The rest of our happy little tour group was able to sleep in an extra half hour this morning as we didn't have to leave for our Wild Horse Adventure until 8:30. We had booked an 11:00 tour in one of their Hummers and you can see us standing in beside our tour vehicle. The wild horses on the outer banks are protected and in order to see them you need a 4 wheel drive vehicle and our motorcycles did not qualify. Route 12 north is a paved road that turns into sand near Swan Beach and the state has put a fence up that extends into the ocean and cattle grates across the road that the horses won't cross in order to protect them. The herd is now down to about 85 horses. Supposedly they have done DNA tests to confirm that these horses are descended from those of the Spanish Conquistadors who were in the outer banks some 500 odd (or even) years

ago. There are rules that visitors have to stay at least 50 feet away from the horses and visitors cannot feed the horses. The fines for breaking the rules are $500 if you are too close and $10,000 for feeding. We saw two groups that consisted of a stallion and his mares. The group is called a harem. The second picture below is the first group we saw and they had a little foal sleeping in the grass. She just wouldn't stand up so I could get a picture. The third picture is the stallion in the second group. The horses live right amongst the houses that are in the beach area on the sand dunes. There is also a preserve that visitors cannot go in that some of them live in. We saw 10 of the 85 horses and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. We grabbed a bite to eat on our way to the Currituck Beach Lighthouse which was our next site to see. The fourth picture below is Mike and me standing in front of the lighthouse before we climbed the 220 steps to the top. This is another brick lighthouse and this one they decided not to paint. The lighthouse began operation on December 1, 1875 and was opened to the public for tours in 1990. We next headed to South Mills, NC and the Williams Farm Market for homemade ice cream. Mike had seen their ad in one of the hotel publications and was sure that because of the name we would be given the family discount. Franklin and Linda Williams were not in the shop this afternoon as they had taken the ice cream truck into Elizabeth City. They have 12 flavors and only began their operation in 2013. They also have a little bakery and I can attest to the fact their lemon squares are delicious. We also bought some of their homemade jam. The fifth picture below shows us with the ice cream. We had an absolutely beautiful sunshiny day with 165 miles traveled.

JUNE 19, 2016 June 19 was primarily just a travel day as we left Elizabeth a City at 7:30 this morning and headed for Mooresville, NC. The extra half hour that everyone had yesterday got taken away today with our early departure. We started our trip on secondary roads with very little traffic, but we eventually ended up on I-85 with heavy traffic which no one really liked. We had a couple of stretch breaks and a gas stop and then met our friend Sue Venne in Salisbury for lunch. Sue used to live in NH and she and her husband Jim rode bikes with us for 30 years prior to his death. Great friends and we miss seeing her on a regular basis. The picture below shows Sue sitting between Lynda and me. We arrived at our hotel in Mooresville about 4:00 and had time to rest for a few minutes before heading out to Paulette and Rays for a cookout. We have 15 couples here from the Ride to Eat group and will begin our tours in the morning. Great catching up with everyone we haven't seen since leaving Florida in April. In the picture below you have Gary, Bruce, Lynda, Sue, Sandy, Jeff, Amy and Mike. Tammy is our photographer today. Another wonderful sunny day on the road.

JUNE 20,2016 June 20 was our first scheduled ride with our Ride to Eat Group. The first picture below shows me modeling our shirt. As you can see our goal is to see America one restaurant at a time. Our area hosts are Paulette and Ray and they took pity on all of us today and planned a short ride. We have 15 couples here this year which is a good turnout. Today's ride will take us in circles and we will never be more than 25 miles away from our hotel. The second and third picture below shows our group preparing for the ride. Gary is trying to get the hearing aids out of the ear and in the pocket. Today's ride took us through some small North Carolina towns. One if these is Troutman and supposedly it gained fame as a moonshine town back in the day. Our lunch stop was in China Grove and the name of the restaurant was the China Grove Family House.. Part of our ride took us by a portion of Lake Norman. There are some beautiful properties on the lake and the lake is huge. We took our first rest stop at a little roadside place on the lake and you can see all of the bikes parked in front. After lunch we made an ice cream stop at the Patterson Farm Market. I ordered a one scoop dish and it was actually two scoops. The last picture below shows Judy, Jenny and Sandyeating ice cream. A beautiful and sun shiny day but the temps are bordering on the lower 90's. What a difference between the 55 degrees we had on our first day of traveling. Our total mileage for today was 113 miles so you can see we didn't go too far. More adventures for tomorrow.
