Sixx:A.M. - Modern Vintage Universal - Frank Carlton Serafino Feranna Jr. is better known as Nikki Sixx, the cofounder, bassist, and primary songwriter for the band Motley Crue. Since 1980 Nikki has been part of one of the most notorious, debauched, alcoholic, dysfunctional and drug addicted bands in the history of rock and roll. The funny thing is that they were also one of the most successful heavy metal bands in the 1980 s-a band that managed to rise above their hair metal peers, and not only hit the rock and roll mainstream hard, but did so while still keeping their heavy metal image intact. I just finished reading the book, Motley Crue-The Dirt and every single word used above to describe Motley Crue is an understatement. Nikki actually formed Sixx:A.M. in 2006 to record an audio accompaniment for his autobiography The Heroin Diaries: A Year in the Life of a Shattered Rock Star. It s a true miracle that Nikki Sixx, and indeed the rest of Motley Crue, are still alive-let alone out on the road now doing their farewell tour. I wasn t really familiar with this band s music; I did know of Nikki s last band, Brides of Destruction, whom I didn t like. What struck me immediately when I heard this album was just Grab & Go books for adults and youth, 5 books to a bag, a quality selection for your Fall reading pleasure. The lead track Stars, and Relief come across as something you could imagine Nickelback doing (some may gag at that statement) and Let s Go has an AFI/Marilyn Manson tinge to it. Incredibly, the track Before it s O v e r sounds like a rockabilly song, mixed with a Tom Waitts/Nick C a v e sensibility and Miracle is an almost funky Top 40 number that still manages to keep its edge. Surprisingly there is even a killer cover version of The Cars classic song Drive. This one is something to hear. Give Me A Love is the only song that has even a hint of Motley Crue to it. The song Hyperventilate will have you tapping your feet on the floor, or your hands on the steering wheel, depending on where you are listening to it-it has an uncannily catchy vibe. Overall, this is a really good album. As I mentioned above, Motley Crue is out touring a total of 70 dates, featuring Alice Cooper as the opening act. The Crue members actually signed a cessation of touring agreement that will prevent them from touring under the Motley Crue name past the end of 2015. The tour also promoted the release of a The Dirt is due for release in 2015.
