Saturday 6th September Seven vehicles left Fotherby Park Wentworth at 9am on a perfect spring morning heading for our first stop at Lake Popiltah. After refreshments and catch up chatter we headed back a few kilometres to turn on to the mail track off the black stuff and on to the dirt. Trip Report and Tor Downs to name what I can remember. The country was looking very healthy. The salt bush looked really good and smelt great. We came across some desert peas growing along the side of the road looking very impressive with their brilliant red flower and black centres. That was all that was needed to stop for photo shots. We passed station properties such as Cuthero, Popiltah, Popio, Wycot We travelled on to Double Yard for a lunch stop. The area had a lot of old PAGE 4 Terry & Anne Benson 3 Industrial Court, Irymple 3498 tbenson@irymplecanvas.com.au www.irymplecanvas.com.au Caravan annexes & modifications Ute canopies Swags Tents Shade sails Canvas awnings

graders and loaders. Des and Mark were impressed and climbed up for a sit in the driver s seat. Over in the livestock yard there was an intriguing circular piece of machinery we decided was probably a mulesing rotating cradle. After lunch we headed off in the direction of Lake Tandou. On the way we came across more desert peas. This time, they were across the paddocks as far as you could see. More photo shots. As we drove on, it was as if a garden had been planted with the red and black desert peas, white daisies and the purple flowers of Patterson s curse or Salvation Jane, whichever name you know it as. We drove past the water regulator at Tandou that controls the water into Tandou. By now we were travelling on the old Pooncarie road. We went on past Kangaroo Lake, heading up to Lake Cawndilla past the irrigation regulator into Cawndilla channel then Kinchega National Park. On the way in to find a camp spot we stopped to look at a very dry Lake Menindee on the side of Kinchega Park. www.kampers.com.au sales@kulkyne.com * Camper trailers * Fishing Tackle * Outback Clothing * Camper Parts & Accessories * Camping Equipment * Used & Budget Campers * 4WD Fit-Outs & Accessories Calder Highway, Red Cliffs Vic 3496 Ph: 5024 2200 Fax: 5024 2122 PAGE 5

Once everybody had set up camp it was time for drinks and nibbles and an enjoyable time was spent in the last of the day s sunshine. We had dinner around the camp fire. The footy started so between social chatter we got score updates. We had one Essendon supporter in Peter and one North Melbourne supporter in Beno. At first it looked like Peter s team was going to be the lucky one but a big effort in the last quarter saw North win. front of the convoy so we might get to see some of the wildlife that had ran away by the time we got to that spot. A big thank you to Jann & Geoff for the great effort they put into the trip, we really enjoyed ourselves. Anne Benson The end of a very enjoyable day. Tomorrow we will be closer to the PAGE 6 728B Fifteenth Street, Mildura Ph: 5023 4466 Fax: 5022 9540 info@austrek.com.au www.austrek.com.au MICHAEL SOLOMON - MANAGER

Sunday 7th September A very leisurely wake up and pack up after a great night around the campfire at Morton Boulka highlighted by Terry s beloved North Melbourne winning their elimination final. We drove to the Kinchega Woolshed and walked around the shearing shed which had 6 million sheep pass through it in 92 years of operation. The elevated shed reminded us all of how shearing was carried out over previous generations. We travelled along the river view road stopping at the boiler which is all that remains of the paddle steamer Providence. The Providence blew up on the 9th November 1872. The drive along the Darling River to weir 32 was very pretty with recent rain making fresh green grass appear. As the Darling is so low there wasn t a lot of water passing over the weir. From here the convoy travelled to the Menindee Lake which was very dry. The regulators were all closed. We made our way to Copi Hollow Lake to have our lunch and a little relaxation on the grassy area beside the lake. It was time to head off and make our way home. A short stop at Karoola Reach where the comments were all about how low the Darling was and how steep the river banks were. Our next stop was Pooncarie to the old wharf. Some of the convoy air up their tyres while other took note of the pink boat strung up between two gum trees on the other side of the river. From here we made our way to Mildura. I would like to take this opportunity to thank our trip leaders Geoff and Jan for a wonderfully organised weekend well done to you both. Jo Lloyd.
