Beisaw July 6 to 13, 2019

Dear Vassar Travelers: I have always wanted to explore Alaska, so why not join me this summer? The Vassar Travel Program is pleased to offer this exceptional Five-Star cruise of southeastern Alaska and Vancouver. We will travel on the elegant small ship Le Soléal, which promises a smooth and quiet ride through narrow fjords and isolated coves that are inaccessible to larger ships. Le Soléal has observation decks, private balconies, and 10 Zodiac boats for watching wildlife, experiencing glaciers, and pondering sunsets. There is also Wi-Fi and room service for those times when you need a break from all the beauty. The itinerary offers an excellent mixture of culture and nature! We start in Juneau, then experience some glaciers on our way to the city of Sitka. The history of Sitka is fascinating, with both Tlingit and Russian cultures shaping it long before it became part of the United States. From there we travel to Petersburg, a Norwegian fishing village, and the more densely populated city of Ketchikan, famous for its totem poles. Misty Fjords National Monument and the Inside Passage should provide opportunities to watch bears, whales, and mountain goats. There will be waterfalls! Our final stop is Vancouver, a city that I love to visit. There are pre- and post-cruise options for those who want more time in Alaska or Vancouver. The pre-cruise option will bring you deep into Alaska s Interior to explore Denali National Park, see the tallest peak in North America and visit the former frontier trading post of Fairbanks. The post-cruise option is great for getting to know the cosmopolitan side of Vancouver, British Columbia s most vibrant city. This travel program is an excellent value for the fine accommodations and the remarkable itinerary, so book now while space and Early Booking Savings are available. I ll see you in Juneau this July! Sincerely, April M. Beisaw, PhD Associate Professor of Anthropology Vassar College Faculty Host April M. Beisaw is an Associate Professor of Anthropology at Vassar College. There she teaches courses on archaeology, Native American culture, and forensic anthropology. April is an expert on the identification of human and animal bones. She wrote most of her book Identifying and Interpreting Animal Bones: A Manual while cruising in the Caribbean. She is currently working on a new book, Taking Their Water for Our City: Archaeology of New York City s Watershed Communities, which reveals the cultural costs of New York s urban water system. This cruise may be exactly what she needs to get that book done.

Exploring th e I nside Passag e Shaped by the Ice Age and sheltered from the Pacific Ocean by one thousand miles of islands lining North America s Pacific coast, the Inside Passage embodies untamed Alaska with magnificent glaciers, snowcapped mountains and a wilderness with more spectacular beauty than you could imagine. Stand on the deck of your Five-Star small ship as you cruise the protected coves and inlets of serene, deep blue waters. Watch for wildlife: bald eagles, harbor seals, humpback whales and brown bears. Experience the thunderous calving of the Dawes and South Sawyer Glaciers, venture into the heart of narrow Tracy Arm and Endicott Arm and explore the Passage s hidden treasures secluded Inian Island and seldom-visited Elfin Cove. Cover photo: Encounter the cobalt blue ice of calving glaciers while cruising through the waters of Tracy Arm Fjord. Along the way, encounter the indigenous culture of the Tlingit, onion domed churches built by Russian fur traders, hearty fishing villages, trading outposts settled by American pioneers and the gold rush settlements built over a century ago. Juneau, Alaska The Alaskan state capital, accessible only by air or sea, picturesque Juneau is where The Call of the Wild author Jack London set forth to join the Klondike Gold Rush in 1897. Tracy Arm Fjord/ South Sawyer Glacier/ Endicott Arm Fjord/Dawes Glacier Cruise into the deep, narrow fjord of Tracy Arm, where waterfalls cascade from dramatic bluffs, spruce and hemlock forests fade to grooved sheer rock and icebergs glint in the sunlight. Venture to the colbalt-blue edge of Dawes Glacier aboard Zodiacs in the pristine Endicott Arm Fjord, and look for Arctic terns, pigeon guillemots and mountain goats.
