A THOUSAND YEAR-OLD CASTLE HISTORY OF A PASSION Velona Castle was built as a medieval fortress in the 11th century as a lookout over the Francigena road leading pilgrims to Rome. The Watchtower remains intact since the 12th century, a reminder of the old rivalry between Siena and Florence. In the Renaissance the Castle was turned into a residential villa and "Velona" is represented in frescoed maps in the Vatican. Darkness fell over the Castle for many centuries, until 2003, when it was resurrected from the ruins and turned into a luxury Resort by Mr. Gianluca Fabiani. After falling in love with the property for its beauty, sorroundings and top position, Fabiani personally supervised the restructuring works that retained the original structure of the residence and discovered the Hot Thermal Springs. He used the best of architectural antique and reclaimed stone, cotto floors, limestone, travertine and marble elements. Fabiani put in the project his technical skills combined with an incredibly intense passion, the result being the stunning modern-day Castello di Velona Resort.
