Dear School for Kicking and Punting Camp Attendee: Thank-you for your application and check for for the 2011 kicking, punting, and snapping camp at Coastal Carolina University. Now in its ninth year of operation, this instruction program will attract players from 8 states. Expect to enjoy your stay on the Conway, S.C., campus and to improve your kicking, punting, and snapping skills. Enclosed with this letter are the following items: 1. General Information Sheet 2. Guidelines for Expected Behavior While a Guest in Conway 3. Map of the Coastal Carolina University campus 4. Medical Statement/Parent Consent Statement/Insurance Statement The first three items contain information to help you and your family prepare for camp. The last sheet should be completed and returned to the School for Kicking and Punting Instruction (P. O. Box 48207, Athens, GA 30604) at least one week prior to camp or submitted at registration. No camper will be allowed to register on July 6 without this information. (You may attach a photocopy of a 2011 school physical, instead of getting a doctor s signature.) Since emphasis is placed on individualized instruction, be prepared to describe your strengths and weaknesses to your group counselor. Establish goals for camp and for the 2011 football season. Your coaches or parents are encouraged to send comments or requests. High school coaches are welcome at all practices, and time will be set aside for coaches to talk with the camp staff. Kickers and punters will be expected to assist one another by serving as snappers and holders. Another great benefit of camp is learning to critique one another so that you can teach someone to observe you objectively when you practice at home. Remember to stretch daily during June and July so that you will be ready to benefit from camp. Parents are encouraged to attend practices and demonstration sessions. (Complete camp schedules will be distributed at registration on Wednesday.) Special instruction can be provided for parents and coaches who wish to learn to assist with practices once players return home. At the Friday night meeting, guidelines will be presented for preparing kickers, punters, and snappers for college selection and recruiting. Video cameras are welcome during all meetings and from the sidelines at all practices. Although the camp cannot accommodate parents with meals or lodging, many services are available in close proximity to the Coastal Carolina campus. A large outlet shopping center is several miles east of campus, and the Grand Strand of Myrtle Beach is only 12 miles away! Because this is a small camp on a relatively quiet campus, the bonds formed among our campers and staff have proven strong. Expect to share your thoughts and experiences with others.
Congratulations to each of you who met or exceeded your 2010 goals! Since a file is maintained for each camper, mailing newspaper clippings and short notes to the camp address throughout the year helps me keep up with your accomplishments. Rising juniors and seniors should mail me copies of the resumes and cover letters they send to colleges. In addition, I need your help with football news from your state. In August, I need copies of newspaper preseason regional surveys of high school and college football teams. In December, I need play-off news and lists of all-county, all-region, and all-state selections. In February, I need information about seniors who commit to college football teams. Staff members (all current college or professional placekickers, punters, and snappers) are chosen for their commitment to provide help to aspiring younger athletes. They receive training in teaching techniques prior to each camp. Moreover, they participate in the administration of the camp, so they share in the determination to maintain the level of excellence which makes the camp a success. Group sizes are kept small to maximize camper-counselor contact and to increase the number of quality repetitions each camper gets at each practice. Although some activities are competitive, the emphasis is on experiencing realistic game situations (without pads or a live rush). Everyone on the staff was a camper at one time. Several parents have asked about day camping. Rarely would sleeping at home be an acceptable option. To us, a day camper is someone who arrives after breakfast and departs after the afternoon practice; this is appropriate for very young campers or for parents who drop off and pick up on their way to and from local jobs. Since the program includes a full practice and a classroom session after supper, a day camper misses a substantial amount of instruction, to say nothing of the opportunity to form bonds with the staff and the other campers. During the day a person without a room would be without a place to rest or wash, since the camp does not utilize an athletic locker room. The camp staff is unwilling to assume responsibility for campers who must commute daily in traffic or for sending tired drivers home at 10 P.M. A few words about the Coastal Carolina facilities are in order. Our dorm is near the practice fields and the cafeteria. Campers will be housed four to a room (because of campus construction), by roommate requests or by age level. Bathroom facilities are located between adjoining rooms. People from other activities may share the building with us, so plan to be fully dressed when you leave your room. The university does not provide telephones in the rooms, but you may bring phones to connect to the lines. You are responsible for damages incurred and for lost keys ($50) before you leave campus. Meals will be all-you-can-eat, and vending machines are available in the dorm. Bring your bathing suit. We will use the campus swimming pool each afternoon after practice. All practices will be on the team s grass practice fields (behind the track). Meetings will be in the visiting team locker room inside the stadium. If you have any questions, please feel free to call me in Athens at 706-549-2695. I am rarely home before 10 P.M.; however, the answering machine is always ready to take your messages. I truly look forward to working with you and your parents (and coaches) this summer. Thank-you for choosing to attend this camp. Sincerely, www.kick-aid.com Carol A. White, Camp Director
