LOCATION The history of the town of Camaiore is dated back to about 190 BC when the Romans, following the foundation of Lucca, decided to build some fortifications at the feet of Mount Prana. In this way it arose the Colony Lucensis in the wide plain of Campus Maior from which it derives the name "Camaiore". After the fall of the West Empire, the territory was subjected to many barbarian invasions, mainly conducted by the Goths and Byzantines. Lucca regained the control of the city with the help of the Lombards and, with the spread of Christianity, the first churches were built. Powerful feudal lords took the control of Camaiore that, around 1230, returned to be included among the communes of Lucca, of which it became the capital in 1308. The city was not adequately protected and it underwent other domains and new destruction. Later the elders of Lucca resumed the control of the city again and they decided the construction of the wall, whose construction finished in 1380. This was not enough to protect the inhabitants of Camaiore who, around 1440, suffered the domination of Florence. The city came back under Lucca in 1470. However, in 1620, Camaiore lost not only the title of capital of the vicariate, but also many territories in favor of Viareggio that, at that time, was very important for the trade of Lucca. In 1801 Napoleon Bonaparte formed the new Republic of Lucca. In 1847, the city became part of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany under Leopold II, and in 1860 there was a plebiscite in which it was annexed to the newborn Kingdom of Italy.
