Day by Day Itinerary Sat., Sept. 28 CHICAGO / EN ROUTE (I) We depart Chicago s O Hare International Airport this evening by scheduled non-stop service of Lufthansa German Airlines on the overnight transatlantic flight to Munich, Germany. Sun., Sept. 29 MUNICH / KITZBÜHEL (I,HD) This afternoon we arrive in the German heartland, Munich and meet our Tour Manager who will accompany us on vacation. Leaving Munich Airport, we ll travel by autobahn across the Austrian border as we make our way into the scenic Tyrolean countryside, through to the Alpine resort of Kitzbühel. As we ll soon find out, Kitzbühel is a fascinating market town. With its historic town center, exciting shopping, awardwinning restaurants and casino, few resorts can match its unique combination of traditional charm and modern amenities. Mon., Sept. 30 KITZBÜHEL (Salzburg) Today we travel to historic Salzburg. The city s charm is apparent in the picturesque streets full of wroughtiron signs, noble architecture and decorated fountains. Our tour of Salzburg will start on the right bank of the Salzach River where we ll see the grounds of Mirabell Palace and the Mozart Conservatoire before crossing into the Old Town. Here we ll see the 15th century Altes Rathaus and take in the sites along the romantic Getreidgasse, home to Mozart s birthplace, now a museum. Next, we ll view both the Collegiate Church and the Franciscan Church as we make our way to the Residence Square, home to the medieval bishops residence. We will also visit Salzburg Cathedral and 12th century Benedictine St. Peter s Abbey, seen frequently in the Sound of Music. Before we return to Kitzbühel, the afternoon is at leisure to explore Salzburg on your own Tues., Oct. 1 KITZBÜHEL The morning is free to explore the village of the Kitzbühel. Few resorts can match the region s unique combination of traditional charm and modern amenities. Browse the delightful shops in search of that perfect gift, relax with quiet meadow and mountain walks or enjoy a horse-drawn carriage rides. This afternoon you will have the option to join us as we travel to Wattens, home of Swarovski Crystal, to enjoy a tour of the Kristallwelten. This truly fantastic journey will take us past works in crystal and into the six Chambers of Wonders, the mystical areas created by André Heller and world-renowned artists. Those choosing to stay behind, perhaps a chair lift and cable car journey into the surrounding Alps to enjoy one of Austria s most beautiful mountain views. Weds., Oct. 2 KITZBÜHEL / PONZANO (B,HD) This morning we depart Kitzbühel and travel to Italy as we set our sights on the Dolomites, often described as Italy s dramatic rocky rooftop. Our destination is Cortina d Ampezzo, the Queen of the Dolomites. Cortina s timeless landscape, a UNESCO World Natural Heritage, is a silhouette of pinnacles, spires and towers, impressive shapes carved into the brilliant blue sky. Italy s top ski resort, Cortina continues to attract illustrious guests. On our way, we ll stop at beautiful Lake Misurina and enjoy a cable car ride to the summit of the Mount Faloria allowing us to appreciate the picturesque villages, rolling green pastures and steep mountain trails with breathtaking views that make up this vast region. Afterward, we ll continue our journey to the town of Ponzano, ideal for discovering the artistic and natural beauty of the Veneto region. Thurs., Oct. 3 PONZANO (Venice) (B,HD) Our excursion today takes us to Venice, a treasure trove of art and architecture rising up out of the waters of the Venetian Lagoon. Our introductory walking tour will begin along the Riva degli Schiavoni. Here we ll see the Statue of Vittorio Emanuele II, the first king of a united Italy, and stop atop the Ponte della Paglia, where you ll find the best views of the neighboring Bridge of Sighs, the covered bridge that links Doge s Palace to the old prisons from where Casanova was said to have made his fantastic escape. Next, we ll cross over into San Marco, the heart of Venetian life. Here we ll enter the delightful piazzetta with the two granite columns of San Marco and San Teodoro, which marked the main entrance to Venice when the city could only be reached by sea. Bordering the square is the Campanile, a 325- foot-high bell tower, and the remarkable Basilica San Marco. After our visit to the Basilica and a traditional Murano glass factory demonstration, free time will be set aside to explore Venice on your own. Fri., Oct. 4 PONZANO (Verona) / STRESA (B,HD) This morning we depart Ponzano and travel to the city of Verona. Here we ll see the 2,000-year-old Arena that is still in use today for Opera performances and concerts, before setting off on foot to view the House of Juliet, the setting for Shakespeare s Romeo and Juliet. Nearby, we ll visit the Piazza Erbe, a lively square flanked by palaces that was formerly the Roman city s forum. Today we ll experience the fruit and vegetable market, milling with Veronese shoppers and vendors. Ahead of us awaits the Piazza dei Signori, the handsomest in Verona. At the center of the square is the marble Statue of Dante, the divine poet, who surveys the surrounding Scaligeri palazzo. Following our visit to Verona, we ll travel into the beautiful Swiss Italian Lake District to Lake Maggiore and the lovely lake side resort of Stresa.
Sat., Oct. 5 STRESA (Isola Bella) The Borromean Islands, lying at the center of Lake Maggiore, are small jewels of natural beauty augmented by artificial grottoes, architectural follies, and landscaped parks. A relaxing day in Stresa will begin with a trip by motor launch to the legendary Borromean Island of Isola Bella, home to a palace and gardens that are the epitome of opulence and luxury. We ll walk through the Palazzo s beautifully furnished halls and witness many renowned paintings, shining armors and Flemish tapestries made of silk and gold. The Italian garden with a baroque taste spreads over terraces placed at different heights and sprinkled with statues, obelisks and ageless stone stairs. The afternoon is free to explore Stresa s picturesque Old Town with its facinating boutiques and shops or to simply stroll along the splendid flower-decked lake promenade and enjoy one of Italy s most beautiful lake and mountain views. Sun., Oct. 6 STRESA / LUCERNE (B,HD) This morning we depart Stresa and cross over the border into Switzerland, traveling over the spectacular Simplon Pass into the Rhone valley, known as the Garden of Switzerland. A quick stop on the Simplon Pass and then we drive to Montreux on the shores of Lake Geneva. Here we ll allow time for lunch and shopping. Following Montreux, we ll travel to the capital city of Bern, one of the few medieval cities that has been preserved intact and in its entirety. Bear Park will offer us a magical view of the city. Afterward, we will make our way through the Emmental Valley to Lucerne. Mon., Oct. 7 LUCERNE This morning is free to explore Lucerne. Be sure to walk along the Spreuer Bridge whose painted gables portray the Dance of Death commemorating a plague outbreak in the 17th century or the Chapel Bridge adorned with paintings that depict the history of Lucerne and Switzerland. This afternoon we ll enjoy a panoramic cruise on the tranquil waters of Lake Lucerne, ideally situated in the historic and scenic heart of what many believe to be the true Switzerland. At the conclusion of the cruise and weather permitting, you will have the option to enjoy the world s steepest cog railway journey up to the summit of Mount Pilatus. On a clear day, the spectacular views include Austria, France, Italy, Liechtenstein and Switzerland.
