Smart Commute Tool User Guide
The Smart Commute tool is a trip planning tool that allows users to explore commute options, match trips with others and track personal impact (trips logged, distance travelled, calories burned, CO2 reduction and money saved). The tool is accessible via desktop, laptop, tablet and smartphone devices (no download necessary). Names and addresses are kept private. Information is only exchanged when a user contacts another user to request a carpool.
To register for an account or to log onto the Smart Commute Tool, users have to visit https://explore.smartcommute.ca/#/ Users will be presented with the login and registration page: Click on either Login or Register to begin.
By clicking on Register you have the option to sign up using Facebook or with an email address. Trip Planning Users can trip plan on the dashboard by entering their A to B (ex. home to workplace) and clicking on Let s Go! Personal information will not be disclosed and is kept private. After clicking on Let s Go! Users will be brought over to the Trip Planning page.
Trip Planning Cont d On the trip planning page, users can find several options to get from their A to B (carpool, walking, transit, etc.) on the left side bar and select a mode that suits their needs. Users may favourite their searched trip by clicking on the star icon for carpool purposes or if it is a frequented trip for trip logging.
Favouriting a Trip and Posting a Carpool If a user decides to favourite a trip by clicking on the star icon, it will become a yellow star and will also appear on the dashboard under Favourite Trips. Users will also be presented with a pop-up window with their favourited trip which can be shared to post a carpool for others to see and join by clicking Save and Share or be kept private under the Share this trip with drop-down menu if the favourited trip is just for trip logging. Users also have the option of sharing with others only in their own private workplace network. Favourited trips can be edited and removed at any time by clicking on the yellow star icon on the dashboard under Favourite Trips.
Joining a Carpool If a user would like to join a carpool, they will require a Carpool ID (ex. XE54R5) which can be found on the dashboard under Favourite Trips. If a user is a Carpool Owner (have favourited the trip and shared their A to B) they will require the Carpool ID to share with others. For a user wanting to join a carpool, they would have to first search their A to B on the Trip Planning page and contact a Carpool Owner to receive a Carpool ID. Users will be able to send the Carpool Owner a message through email and exchange information to see if the carpool suits their needs. When a user receives a Carpool ID from the Carpool Owner via email, they must copy and enter the ID into the Join box under Favourite Trips and click Join. A confirmation message will be displayed indicating that the two users are now under the same carpool.
Trip Logging To log a trip, users must select a date on the calendar and fill in the trip logging details: A to B Destination (can select a favourite trip from the drop down menu) Departure Time Return Time (can be no return trip) Mode of Travel (carpool, transit, walk, etc.) *Please note that One-Way Distance is automatically calculated based on your A to B destination. Trips can be logged up to 12 weeks back or 1 week into the future and multiple dates can be selected. Users will receive badges and achievements on the dashboard as they continue to log more trips.
