TRAVEL TO BUCHAREST 1) Geo-politics Romania is a medium-sized European country, with a population of 18 mil. inhabitants, now part of the European Union. The national currency is Romanian LEU (RON): 1 EUR 4.5 RON. Bucharest is the capital of Romania. With an official population of approximately 2 million inhabitants, Bucharest is the sixth largest city in Europe, after London, Paris, Berlin, Madrid and Rome. Big city life does not automatically translate into expensive life, according to Forbes, Bucharest is the second cheapest tourist city in Europe after Kiev. Bucharest has been known for over two centuries as Little Paris or Paris of the East. Its impressive architecture, its bohemian atmosphere and the busy lifestyle of its inhabitants bare much resemblance to that of the French capital. But Bucharest has a life of its own a life that is strongly rooted in its turbulent past and still reflects the daunting years of communism. Still, it is a life that boasts energy, 2

optimism and vitality. House clubs, jazz clubs, rock clubs welcome hundreds of party seekers each night. The historical city centre is crowded with pubs and bars and there are plenty of cafés, bistros, restaurants and pastry shops to choose from. Bucharest currently attracts almost 1 million foreign visitors per year and the numbers are still growing. Note that tips are allowed but not mandatory in restaurants, taxis, etc., and are usually limited to 10% of the cost of the service. 2) VISA In order to enter Romania, you will need a Romanian VISA if you are not an EU citizen. The local organizers advise anyone who may need a visa to apply early. General information on Romanian visa requirements, policy and procedures can be found at the web site of the Romanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (https://www.mae.ro/en/node/2035). The Organizing Committee can provide a letter of invitation as a supporting document for your VISA application. Please also note that this letter of invitation will not guarantee that a visa for Romania will be granted. 3) Weather Because of its position on the southeastern part of the European continent, Romania has a climate that is transitional between temperate and continental. Bucharest experiences a humid continental climate, characterized by cold winters (December to February) and hot summers (June to August). At the end of September when the conference will be held, the weather is overall warm and possible rainy. Daily highs range from 20 C to 25 C, as for lows, expect an average of 10 C to 15 C. 4) Travel to Bucharest By air Romania can be reached by several major international airlines from European gateway cities. Bucharest has an international airport, situated in its north region, on DN1 road at 16.5km from Bucharest centre, Henri Coanda (Otopeni) airport. (http://www.otp-airport.ro) The airport connection with the city centre is made by bus (lines 783 and 780) or taxi. 3

The 783 Express line connects Bucharest Henri Coanda International Airport with the city center in about 60 minutes. The 780 Express line connects Bucharest Henri Coanda International Airport with Gara de Nord (the North Railway Station) in about 45 minutes. Schedule: Monday-Friday: 05:30-20:00 (every 15 minutes) Monday-Friday: 20:30-23:00 (every 30 minutes) Saturday, Sunday and legal holidays : 05:30-23:00 (every 30 minutes). The magnetic card valid for two travels costs 7 RON. Card desk is open daily: 06:00-21:00, in front of the Domestic Flights Terminal. Licensed taxis, with or without prior request, with fares of around 1.80 lei/km (some companies may have higher rates up to 3.5 lei/km), are available for passengers arriving at Bucharest Henri Coandă International Airport. You can order a taxi from a certain company by using the touch screen terminals for taxi requests, in the Arrivals terminal. You can also just pick a taxi from the station clearly signposted and located at the exit of the Arrivals terminal. These cars are operated by companies approved by the airport, and are completely safe. The fare rate should be displayed in the cab, and the total cost will be calculated automatically depending on the number of km to the destination. The average cost of a trip to the city centre is around 70 RON (approx. 15 EUR). You can pay in RON or EUR. You can also choose to give a small tip to the driver (not more than 10% of the total cost!). Please, do not use unlicensed or private cabs, and do not let yourself be approached by fake taxi drivers! By train (not suggested) Bucharest s main station Gara de Nord (North Railway Station) is a major rail center with daily connections from/to cities throughout Europe and main cities in Romania. Assistance with itineraries could be obtained by request from the Local Organizing Committee. By car Documents required by Border Police are the vehicle's registration, proof of insurance and a valid driver's license. U.S. / Canadian/ Australian/ New Zealand driver licenses are valid for driving in Romania for 90 days from the date of entry into Romania. 4

When renting a car in Europe, please check with the car rental company its policy regarding taking the car across national borders. Independent travelers entering Romania by car (own or rental) need to obtain a road toll badge, called Rovinieta. Rovinieta is available on-line www.roviniete.com as well as at any border-crossing point, postal office and most gas stations. Cost of Rovinieta for passenger cars is the equivalent in Romanian Lei (RON) of: 6 EURO (valid for 7 days) or 16 EURO (valid for 30 days). There is no any other tax to be paid by visitors/ tourists when entering or leaving Romania. LOCAL TRANSPORT Bucharest City has an extensive public transport system that operates during the day making local travel throughout the whole city easy for all. The City is served by a network of subways and ground base transport network: buses, trolleys and tram rails, as well as plenty of taxicabs. There are many transportation options in Bucharest, but due to traffic, often subway train travel is the fastest and most convenient way of getting around the City. Bucharest public transport system RATB operates ground based public transport in Bucharest, an extensive network of buses, trolleys and tram rails: http://www.ratb.ro/eng/index.php If you plan to take public transportation in Bucharest (highly recommended), we advise that you purchase an Electronic Wallet and put an adequate sum of money on it. Any ride throughout the system is at the flat rate of 1.3 Lei (except for certain express buses). You can use one card individually or for more than one person (just swipe the card two or more times and push the 2 button from the validating screen inside the bus). There are also options for an unlimited 1 or 7 days pass subscription (that can be used by one individual only), that may make sense depending on how long your stay in Bucharest. Each change of busses, trolleys or trams represent a new ride and is charged. Remember to validate your Electronic Wallet every time you get in a bus, trolley or tram. Bucharest subway system Metrorex operates Bucharest s subway system, everyday between 5AM and 11PM local time: http://www.metrorex.ro/first_page_p1352-2 Tickets price for subway is not on a flat rate and depends on how many trips a ticket have. Are available tickets with 2 (5 lei) or 10 (20 lei) trips, as well as daily (8 lei) and weekly (25 lei) pass with unlimited trips (15 minutes waiting between the trips). Transfer between connecting subways trains at various stations 5

SIGHT SEEING 1) Bucharest The capital of Romania boasts some exceptional historical buildings, and during the interwar period Bucharest gained the name of Little Paris due to its architecture and the sophistication of the society at that time. Those elements are still present and are surely worth exploring by visiting the cultural landmarks: museums, monuments, churches and cathedrals. You could also take a walk in a garden to free your mind and rest your thoughts: Cismigiu and Herastrau are two of the oldest and nicest parks in Bucharest. Bucharest is the location of the second-largest building in the world, after the Pentagon: The Palace of the Parliament. It will impress with its greatness and will offer a great panorama of Bucharest but keep an eye on the history of the project as well. Arcul de Triumf is another symbol of Bucharest, a monument built to commemorate victory in World War. Arc de Triumph houses a small museum open to the public at certain times. Among must-see museums are: Dimitrie Gusti Village Museum (http://www.muzeul-satului.ro/en/) Grigore Antipa Museum Of Natural HisTORY (http://www.antipa.ro/en) The National Museum Of Art (http://www.mnar.arts.ro/home) The National Museum Of Romanian History (http://www.mnir.ro/) 2) Bucharest surroundings Not far away from the center of Bucharest are some sites with a cultural and historical heritage value. Among them are worth to mention Mogosoaia and Stirbei Palace, Snagov Monstary and Comana Natural Park. Mogosoaia Palace is one of them situated near Bucharest (10 km) in a splendid park on the shore of Mogosoaia Lake. Mogoasoaia Palace was built in 1698-1702 by Constantin Bracoveanu a famous Romanian Voivode. The Palace is an architectural monument, having the façade 8

dominated by traditional staircase balconies, and by the arcades and columns with capitals, specific to the Brancovenesc (Brancovan) style. Mogosoaia Palace has also some Byzantine decorative features and adornments which join stylistic elements characteristic both of the Italian Renaissance and the Baroque. Palace Stirbei from Buftea, built in the year 1864 by Alexandru B. Ştirbei, is another point of interested around Bucharest. The palace is a combination of Gothic style with decorations that talk about the interest in romantic searches of the European and Romanian architecture of the 19th century. (link = http://www.domeniulstirbey.ro/index.php - not en) Another place filled with legends, is Snagov Monastery, located on an island in the northern part of Snagov Lake. The monstery is an important monument of feudal art, founded during the reign of Mircea the Elder, the first mention in 1408. This monastery was, the favorite religios place of the ruler Vlad the Impaler, known as Dracula for this reason was chosen as the burial place of Dracula. Comana Natural Park (http://www.comanaparc.ro/cadrunatural.php - not en) is a complex in the flat plain of southern Romania characterized by a high diversity of flora and fauna and consisting mainly of forests, agro-ecosystems, meadows, rivers, lakes, canals, oxbow lakes and a micro-delta. You can observe here a various of bird, plans and fish species, some protected in Europe. 3) Romania Authentic, Natural and Cultural are the words that best capture the essence of Romania, a dynamic country rich in history, arts and scenic beauty. Romania offers countless unique travel experiences that are waiting to be discovered. A journey of three of four hours, by car or train, can take you from the Danube River to a beautiful, intact, medieval town; from Bucharest to the Black Sea; from Southern Transylvania to the historic regions of Bucovina or Maramures. The Danube River flows from its springs in Germany's Black Forest to the Black Sea. Just before reaching the sea it forms the second largest and best preserved of Europe's deltas: The Danube Delta (http://romaniatourism.com/danube-delta.html). The Danube Delta is comprised of an intricate network of waterways and lakes divided between the three main estuary channels of the Danube. This area of floating reed islands, forests, 9

pastures and sand dunes is home to a fascinating mix of cultures and people as well as a vast array of wildlife. The Danube Delta is as well the highest concentration of bird colonies in all of Europe. The maze of canals bordered by thatch, willows and oaks entangled in lianas, offers the perfect breeding ground for countless species of birds, some of them from as far away as China and Africa. Millions of Egyptian white pelicans arrive here every spring to raise their young, while equal numbers of Arctic geese come here to escape the harsh winters of Northern Europe. Romania's national and natural parks are one of the other main attractions, displaying a unique variety of landscapes, vegetation and wildlife, protects some of the largest remaining areas of pristine forest in Europe. One of the most appreciated national and natural parks are: Retezat National Park (http://www.retezat.ro/index.php/english.html) Piatra Craiului National Park (http://www.pcrai.ro//lang-en/6/parcul.html) Rodna Mountains National Park (http://www.parcrodna.ro/) http://www.parcapuseni.ro/ - not EN http://www.bucegipark.ro/index.php - not EN Among natural beauties you can find in Romania many medieval towns (http://romaniatourism.com/medieval-towns.html), fortified churches and castles (http://romaniatourism.com/castles-fortresses.html) and painted monasteries (http://romaniatourism.com/painted-monasteries.html). Romania is part of UNESCO World Heritage (http://whc.unesco.org/en/statesparties/ro/) and the sites are: Monastery of Horezu Medieval fortified churches of Transylvania Historic centre of Sighisoara Painted Monasteries of Bucovina Wooden Churches of Maramures Dacian Fortresses of the Orastie Mountains (Sarmisegetusa Regia) Sites: http://romaniatourism.com/world-heritage-sites.html + poze http://www.patrimoniuromanesc.ro/ 10
