UPDATE Volume 49, Issue 01 AMA CHARTER CLUB 797 January 2017 The SANTA BARBARA RADIO CONTROL MODELERS INC. is incorporated in the State of California as Chapter 797 of the ACADEMY OF MODEL AERONAUTICS (AMA). The purpose of this club is to promote the hobby of model aviation in a safe and enjoyable manner. Regular meetings are held on the first Thursday of each month at the Santa Barbara Airport Visitor s Center, 45 Hartley Place (off of Hollister at David Love Place). Everyone is welcome at our meetings. Please phone or e-mail any officer for further information. Of course I assumed (or more accurately stated, was Shanghai d ) the position at a very difficult time for the club. It has been almost one year since we lost our strip at the ranch and a successful search for a new field to pursue our hobby is our existential challenge. My predecessor Jim Kolanek really deserves credit for maintaining his enthusiasm and working hard to turn things around. Investigations at Dos Pueblos Ranch, Naples and Chamberlain Ranch all had promise but ultimately did not come to fruition for various reasons. I can report however that on December 12, Jim, Tom Wolf and myself had a very interesting joint meeting with the Director of SB County Public Works, the Project Manager of the General Services Department and the Deputy Parks Director. They viewed our Power Point presentation about the club, our requirements and our value to the community and it was clear that they wanted to help us. Of course finding a spare 40 oak tree free and open acres in Santa Barbara County is a daunting task. However, the Mohawk Shores area adjacent to our old float fly location at Lake Cachuma is still in the mix. We are hopeful that the three officials can have some influence with the lake managers in order to overcome any impediments that may exist to installing a new airstrip at that location beside the lake. This is an exciting prospect and we will keep you posted. Page 1

In the meantime, the other equally important mission is to maintain our club s vitality pending the acquisition of a new field. It was encouraging to have 33 in attendance at Harry s for our annual party and we have already reserved the room for December, 2017. Membership fees are waived but those who do not maintain their AMA membership will be dropped from our club roster. We will continue with our monthly meetings and will try to find interesting guest speakers and other agenda items that will increase attendance. In fact, I believe that Gordon Smith has offered to give a talk in February on his early career in free flight flying. Please try to attend the meetings. It s a good way to get off the couch and you can even join some of us at the Sierra Grill and Bar next door prior to the meetings. Finally, we invite brainstorming. If you have any ideas or maybe personal contacts that you think might be of help in the search for a new field, please contact any club officer. Let s hope for big things to happen in 2017 and Happy New Year to you all. Glenn Dorfman, SBRCM President Fred and Linda Wudl, and outgoing President Jim Kolanek Club Meeting Minutes There was no regular club meeting for December, so there are no minutes to report for this month. Submitted by: Tom Wolf, SBRCM Secretary Lemay Curtis, Gordon Smith and Dick Curtis (L-R). Christmas Holiday Party 2016 This year s party was a success, with about 33 club members and family members present. It was once again held at Harry s Plaza Café in the Ranchero Room. Member Spotlight: John Fodor and Barbara Shapiro catching up during the social hour. There was no input for this feature this month. If you wish to share your background with the membership, please contact the editor and provide a short biography and supporting photos. New Projects: There was no input again month. SBRCM: Way Back When It was April 1989 and SBRCM participated in the Flight Into Spring event what was held at Lake Cachuma annually in the late 1980s / early 1990s. Flight Into Spring was intended to promote the Lake Cachuma Park and the Santa Barbara County Parks Department. Numerous community groups had exhibits and activities for the public. SBRCM displayed RC models and had an AMA Delta Dart building activity and flight competition for the kids. Events such as this are a good way to provide positive publicity for the club. In addition to airplanes, the SBRCM display included helicopters and gliders. Tom and Greg Wolf are kneeling at the center. The AMA Delta Dart building tent was very popular with the kids. As I recall, close to 100 kits were assembled during the event. SBRCM provided the kits and building help as required. A very young Greg Wolf is looking back at the photographer. A group of sky divers parachuted into the event. This caused quite a bit of excitement on the part of those in attendance. Around and About: SBRCM Members at Lake Casitas 12/13/2016 This photo shows some of the many airplanes that were on display at the Flight Into Spring event. It is a really nice flyer. A typical flying session at Lake Casitas. Lots of hangar flying going on here! TJ s chair of honor is temporarily empty. Page 5 This is Dale Byer s airplane on short final.

Flying Field Schedule: Elings Park: Daily Sunrise Sunset Note: Elings Park requires a park pass ($70/yr) for usage of the model airstrip, in addition to SBRCM and AMA membership. The Elings Park site is restricted to small to medium electric aircraft only, and pilots must not overfly areas outside of the flying site. No ducted fans or other noisy aircraft (i.e. high rpm screamers) are permitted. Gordon Smith knows how to fly in style. That is a relaxing way to get some air time! _ Copyright 2017 C/O Tom Wolf SBRCM Newsletter Editor 805-967-3523 tomdebwolf@cox.net More hangar flying.
