Volume 11, Issue 9 September, 2008 Our next two meetings are Sunday, September 14th and Sunday October 12th at the convenient Old Country Buffet on North Ave in Northlake, Illinois. Visit us on the web at www.ilz2.com OFFICIAL PUBLICATION OF GWRRA Region E, Illinois District, IL Z2 Chicagoland Wings Chapter Director Mike Kresch Hello all, things for me have been a little crazy lately I have been teaching every weekend in June and July except for the week I attended Wing Ding. During my trip Melissa asked for a divorce. So all of my time lately has been taken up by lawyers and caring for my children. Needless to say I am not fully up to speed with all the events that have been planed. Mary Geurkink has been handling things for me and I would like to thank her for all that she has done for the chapter and myself. She has been a good friend through all of this. The Davis rally is on the 5th, 6th, and 7 th In New Hampton Iowa. After our next chapter meeting we will be heading south to Crete for some Ice Cream. On the 21 st and the 22 nd we will be at Thompson for golf and antique weekend. So the guys will be golfing while the wives are shopping. October is just around the corner. With that it is time for our annual fall color ride. Randy Stern is leading the ride this year. He will give all the information at the next meeting. So if you haven t signed up please do so. If you will be going you need to get your credit card numbers to Bobbie by the next meeting. Chris Flannery is hosting a Halloween Party at her house. This is an adult only party. So no children. That may mean some of us might get left at home. I for one am a BIG kid. The Sycamore pumpkin festival parade is on the 26 th the parade kicks off at 1pm. Now that all the children are back in school please be careful out there. The younger children don t always look before they cross the street. I know that first hand. Sydney started kindergarten this year and she was so excited that she did not look before she crossed the street to get to the bus stop. Please keep that in mind when we are riding out there. Until I see all of you at the next meeting be careful out there.

OFFICIAL PUBLICATION OF GWRRA Region E Illinois District IL-Z2 Chicagoland Wings Below is an article that I found interesting and I felt that this should be passed on. This is on page 37 of the 2008 September issue of The American Motorcyclist Magazine titled "Two-Wheeled Savings". Senior Chapter Educator Dennis Wegener "Study: Expensive gas fueling bike sales. A study from a major general media outlet validates what a lot of us already knew: high gasoline prices are leading to more motorcycles on the road. The latest Auto Pulse Survey, conducted by the Consumer Reports National Research Center, found that this year's soaring gasoline prices- which, according to the Energy Information Administration, are up 38 percent on average from February through late Junehave led to many changes in American's lifestyles as we deal with the big hit. The first change is miles driven. The Department of Transportation says 20 billion fewer miles had been driven through June compared to the same period in '08. The second change is in attitudes. According to Consumer Reports, 25 percent of drivers have considered giving up four wheels for two, with motorcycles winning out slightly over scooters, 18 percent to 14 percent." In the same magazine is an article saying that John Ulrich who was born in Elmhurst, Il. is a member of the AMA Board of Directors. Any relation, Robert? Page 4 Statistics: July 1997 DUI/Implied consent law amended to establish illegal per se (previously 0.10). Jan. 1998 School bus drivers caught driving a school bus with any trace of alcohol in their systems will lose the bus driver permit. Jan. 1998 Graduated driver's license established for drivers under 21 years of age. Jan. 1999 Increased the reinstatement fee for a person whose license is suspended or revoked a second or subsequent time. Jan. 1999 Established the use of ignition interlock devices as a regular option for the sanction of DUI offenders, allowing the Secretary of State to require the use of such devices when granting driving relief to individuals committing a second or subsequent DUI offense. Ride Safe! -Dennis
OFFICIAL PUBLICAT ION OF GWRRA Region E Illi nois District IL-Z2 Chicagoland Wi ngs OFFICIAL PUBLICATION OF GWRRA Region E Illinois District IL-Z2 Chicagoland Wings...We finally had to ride on the interstate from Paducah Kentucky to Knoxville Tennessee. We road through the Smokey Mountains eventually reaching Greenville So.Carolina for Wing Ding 30 where we spent 4 nights before ultimately resuming our journey to home. Wingding 30 is our first and we had a blast. We were amazed at the unbelievable number Goldwings present. We represented Z2 in the 4th of July Parade as we carried the Illinois State Flag. Our ride home had one more treat Deal s Gap, better known as the Dragon s Tail. Along with the Dragon s Tail s reputation, the road we took getting to Deal s gap was just as challenging and twisty. Things learned during our trip of 2008. Stay protected; drink plenty of water during and prior to (2 days prior) any desert trip. Always carry a few extra bottles of H2O if you will be desertriding. Use a very high SPF sunscreen (we used 50SPF), Be prepared for the elements; we actually used our heated clothing, rain gear, full-face helmets and half helmets; check your equipment often (we had to replaced tires in So.Carolina), Don t over pack, use laundry facilities, and finally, Do Not be in a hurry. The conclusion of Randy and Lisa s article from last month. Just an FYI--- after seeing several riders wearing the mesh riding jackets, and wondering how hot they must be, little did we know they were laughing at us. We ultimately purchased mesh riding jackets and cooling vests at the Wingding. Wearing them the rest of the trip home, we were amazed at the significant difference this equipment made. Just one more thing learned on our trips. FYI: states we rode through the 2008 trip: Illinois, Iowa, Nebraska, Colorado, Utah, Arizona, New Mexico, Kansas, Missouri, Kentucky, Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina and Indiana experiencing rain, sleet, snow, and hail, temps from 48-degrees to 105-degrees. 2007 trip: Illinois, Iowa, Wisconsin, Minnesota, South Dakota, Wyoming, Montana, Washington, Oregon, California, Nevada, Utah, Nebraska, All pictures used in this article were taken during our trip. Randy and Lisa Thank you so much for sharing your trip with us!! It certainly looked amazingly beautiful and we are sure you had a memorable time. Lets all keep riding and sharing our experiences!
