President's Message Calendar Events Upcoming Events Birthdays and Anniversaries Finally, April showers are bringing May flowers. I ve procrastinated long enough. Spring is here, and that means it s time to get those small fix it jobs done so the A is ready for the tour season. For me that includes a generator bearing and a door latch spring. Although I was told that if you have seat belts you don t need a door latch! Right, Charlie? The Board is excited about all the upcoming activities and drives that are planned. Be sure to check the calendar to see what we have so far. We are still looking for a few day trips, so if you have an idea, be sure to contact a Board member. Also, if you have any Tech Talk ideas Don Graves would love your input. I hope to see you all at the club breakfast/picnic on May 18 th. I ll have a short Mystery Tour following the breakfast for those so inclined for an afternoon drive. Keep the wheels rolling! Doug Meadowlark Model A Ford Club, Omaha, NE May 2014 Special Points of Interest: Hen's Nest May 2014 We had another fun meeting. Old items were bought by a number of ladies. We had a 100 year old marriage certificate, 30 year old lingerie, old tea pot, Elaine read a great article about hanging out the laundry and what it meant. I'm sure I have forgotten something but I hope you will understand I have had company for two weeks and have been very busy. I also brought our 2 granddaughter's Payton and Piper Campbell form London, England. Everyone had fun asking them questions. I know we have done this before but for next month let s bring some fun kitchen items again. It is always fun to see what other people use or have found that they like. Suzanne and Anne

Upcoming Activities Tulsa Regional June 9-12, 2014 Thinking about driving your Model A to the Tulsa Regional and don't want to drive alone? Let Greg(402-332-5522) or Dale(402-949-0521) know if you want to be part of a group of Model A s heading to Oklahoma. We plan to depart on Friday June 6th and spend two nights on the road seeing a bit of the Kansas Flint Hills, then return on Saturday, June 14th after spending one night on the road. Tour to Fort Atkinson Fort Calhoun May 4, 2014 On Sunday, May 4, we will have a tour to Fort Atkinson in Fort Calhoun. This is one of the days the Fort will be hosting a Living History activities. We will meet at Cubby s Gas Station at 48 th & McKinley and drive the 9 miles north to Fort Atkinson. A valid State Park Entry Permit is required to enter the park. The Visitor Center requires an admission fee of $2 for adults, $1 for children under 13, children 3 and younger are free. In case you don t know much about Fort Atkinson, it is a very interesting place even more interesting when they are having a Living History day. This Fort was built in 1819 on what was called the Council Bluff east of Fort Calhoun, Nebraska. The bluff used to overlook the Missouri River, but is now a few miles away. William Clark (of Lewis & Clark) recommended the site. The primary goals of Fort Atkinson were to protect the fur trade, show the flag, and keep peace with the Indians. The Indians who were native to the area at the time were the Pawnee, Omaha, Iowa, Oto, Missouri, Osage, and Sauks. The soldiers assigned to the Fort spent most of their time in agricultural duties as they had to raise all their own food. The only military action the soldiers were involved in was in 1823 when a fur trading company was attacked by the Arikara Indians. At its height, Fort Atkinson housed nearly ¼ of the standing US Army, approximately 1200 soldiers. The Council House at Fort Atkinson was the site of conferences with several Indian Chiefs. In 1824 the only international treaty that has ever been signed in Nebraska was signed there when the Chiefs of the Pawnee Nation met with representatives of the Mexican Government to sign a peace treaty. The Fort was closed in 1827 because the fur trade was under control and the action with the Indian Wars had moved further west. By the mid-1850s, the grounds had become a cornfield. In the mid-1950s, archeological digs uncovered the location of the buildings and walls. The Fort Atkinson Foundation and the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission cooperated to develop it as a State Historical Park. This information is from http:// www.fortatkinsononline.org/#/about-the-fort/ history. As of the writing of this, we don t know exactly when the events start for the day because the Fort Atkinson office does not open until May 1. If you are interested in this tour, please sign up and we will contact you as soon as we get some solid details. Also, we plan to have a picnic at a small park in Fort Calhoun. There is a nice shelter we will use for our picnic. If a wiener roast comes to mind, we will do it there, or, if you would just like to munch on a sandwich, that will work to. Be sure to sign up at the meeting if you want to go on this tour or call Don Graves at 402-659-1815. 2

Sunday May 18th Chalco Hills Recreation Area 9:30am We will be holding the Spring Pancake Breakfast at the Chalco Hills Recreation Area. The first pancakes will be started at 9:30. This is always a fun time even though it can be cool. The food will be provided by the club. The club will be accepting free will donations to cover the cost of the food. We are planning a president s tour after the breakfast, so get your A s tuned up and ready to go. Balloons and Bridges Trek July 31 Aug 3 Balloons and Bridges Trek - Visit the Bridges of Madison County and other historic sites near Winterset, IA and attend the National Balloon Classic in Indianola, IA. We will stay three nights in Osceola (details below) and cover around 400 miles in our Model As. Some general information is available on the following two websites. More details will be provided later. POC: Greg Bowden http://www.nationalballoonclassic.com/ http://madisoncounty.com/index.php?page=the -bridges We are staying at the Evergreen Inn in Osceola, IA for three nights, July 31st, Aug 1st, and Aug 2nd Off to Michigan in a Model A The Graves and McKinneys are planning a Model A trip to the MAFFI museum in Hickory Corners, Michigan, and the Henry Ford Museum and other places in Dearborn, Michigan. This will be a 10 to 12 day trip starting sometime around July 3 to 5 and returning by July 16 or 17 th (because we have to be back for the Gretna parade). Besides the museums, one highlight of the trip will be a ferry trip across Lake Michigan. If you would like more information, please call or e-mail Janet Graves (402-453-7166/ janet@omahaneb.org). If you might be interested in joining us on this trip, let us know by May 1. We don t have the exact dates and other details of the trip worked out yet because we need to know who all will be going to see what works for them. To reserve a room, call Kat at 614-342- 3162 (office) or 614-414-9831 (cell) and mention that you are with the Meadowlark Model A Ford Club. Rooms have been blocked off for us, so you need to reserve one of the Meadlowlark rooms under your own name. All rooms have a small refrigerator, microwave, WIFI and cable. The Evergreen is also close to a couple restaurants. Important: The deadline to reserve a room is Monday, July 21st. Treats Please help us out for treats for our general meetings. We need 2 people each meeting - sign up sheet at the meetings or call Anne Krueger @ 402-393-8274. Don & Janet Graves and Bob & Mary McKinney 3

What a way to treat new members! I made a terrible mistake in the last newsletter and on the roster. I listed the wrong name for Nancy. I don t know how in the world I got that other name in my head. Gayle thought he was really going to be in trouble, but he really did write Nancy on the membership form. I am so sorry! Please everyone change Gayle s wife s name to NANCY in your roster. Thank goodness I got it right on her name tag, so we should be able to wipe that other name out of our thoughts. I promise to be more careful in the future. Janet Graves 4

May Activities cont. All Ford Car Show The Club s All Ford Car Show is just around the corner, (June 28 th if you haven t already marked your calendar). Doug Heeren will have a volunteer sign-up sheet available at the May meeting. And if you don t sign up then, he will be giving you a call to help with this club event. If you have a preference for a position, you may want to call Doug before the meeting. Generator Clinic Do you have a Model A generator you want to check out, or rebuild as a spare? Bring it to Howard Denker's on Saturday, May 17th between 12:00 noon and 4:00 PM. With Howard's advice and assistance, you will test your generator, take it apart, and determine what parts you need to order to make it operate correctly. At a later date TBD, after you have gathered the needed parts, we will schedule a date to return to Howard's and reassemble your generator. Any questions or for directions to Howard's house, refer to your 2014 Meadowlark Roaster or call Howard at 402-333-1393. In order to save time and to keep Howard's shop clean, be sure the outside of your generator is clean and oil/grease/dirt free when you bring it to Howard's. Tech Talks at Monthly Meetings We have had a variety of Tech Talks at our regular monthly meetings. Several times the question has been asked What would you like a tech talk on? However, that question is usually not answered following the Tech Talks. So, here is your chance: write me a note telling me what you would like a Tech Talk on. You can e-mail me at don@omahaneb.org or write a paper note and send it to me or put it in the Suggestion Box that will be provided at the meeting. Or, heck, just call me at 402-659-1815. If your request is on an item that doesn t require much explanation, that is fine. I will combine those small requests together, and we will have a Tech Talk that covers all those smaller problems. If you would like a topic covered again, that s fine, too. The idea of these Tech Talks is to cover areas you might not understand. It s very possible you are not the only one who would like this topic covered. My goal here is to have all members understand any and all areas of our Model As and make you feel comfortable while driving them. Hope to hear from YOU, Don Graves 5

From the Editor, I think that it is time to highlight a member s A in the newsletter again. I did that when I first became editor, and for some reason I got away from putting them in. I believe that most A s have a story. The story is who owned it, what it may have been used for, how you came into ownership, and restoration levels that you may or may not have done. I will be asking members to write a short bit about your car and a picture or 2. I am busy getting my A ready for the drives planned in May and the trip to Tulsa in June. It has decided to not play nice. This too shall be overcome. Dale Deadline for June issue is Friday, May 30, 2014. If you have something which will be late, please phone or email dwjerg@gmail.com.
