I m pleased to report that 48% of the Western Area Chapters were represented at the Governing Board meeting. I would like to thank all of the Delegates and Temporary Delegates that made this possible. Thank you! I have started a blog, with the help of Warren & Marla James, that will appear on the WMHA website (wafmca.com) under the heading of WMHA NEWS. I plan to post FMCA and WMHA happenings that are of interest about once a week sometimes more, sometimes less. Please mark your calendars for the 30 th Annual WMHA Rally that will be held in Indio, CA, on Jan 10-14, 2018. The theme is Viva Las Vegas and Elvis is guaranteed to be in the house. HAPPY & SAFE TRAVELS LON CROSS, F233066 NATIONAL VP WMHA PRESIDENT Greetings everyone, Well springtime has moved into summer. To start things off, Debbie and I headed north to the gold rush town of Sonora to attend an Apollo Amigos rally at the Mother Lode Fairgrounds over Memorial Day weekend. Because this is such a beautiful area with lots of scenic back roads and towns to explore, we decided to take our Harley trike along instead of a tow car. We have a nice enclosed trailer for hauling plus it makes a nice parking garage during the night. We had a fun time at the rally and we also rode around to other towns for ice cream, gift shops, lunch, and just enjoying the scenery and great weather. From there we headed back home to drop off the trike and get our car hitched up and head to Bakersfield for our annual Executive Board meeting, this year held at the River Run RV Park. We went over a long list of items regarding our Indio rally and also put together a budget proposal for the Governing Board meeting coming up in September. I m happy to say we have put together a balanced budget proposal to be presented for approval. Now in the middle of June and the first heat wave of the season upon us, we were off to the coast for a Golden State Trackers rally in Oceano just south of Pismo Beach. What a treat with daytime temps in the upper 70s and mid 50s at night. We had a fun rally with great

VOLUME 30, ISSUE 3 WESTERN BYWAYS PAGE 3 Senior Vice President's Views (Con t) Northern Area Vice President s Message food and some new games to play to get everyone involved. This rally also coincided with the annual classic car show in Pismo Beach held every year over Father s Day weekend. This is a fabulous show for classic car buffs. We put in about 2 miles of walking over several hours to see all the cars and talk with the owners. Since this is a 3-day event it was a treat to see and hear custom and classic cars driving all around the Pismo area besides sitting in the show area (downtown Pismo). Of course all good things must come to an end and Monday found us heading back home to the continuing heat wave. One thing that took place earlier this year was negotiating a new contract with the fairgrounds. It took a few months, but we now have a new 3-year contract (with 2-year option) so we can proceed with all that we do to put on the rally. As you know, once the Executive Board meeting takes place things start kicking in to gear as we prepare to once again put on the best area rally in FMCA, our own Indio rally. Next up will be the Governing Board Meeting in Hanford in September, where we will present the budget for 2018 and also have the Indio rally planning session. Then the tempo of activity really picks up as the rally date gets closer. Along with this, Lon and I have been working to line up our entertainment for the rally. Since our theme is Viva Las Vegas we wanted to get some Vegas-type entertainment and we managed to get an exciting line-up. First because they were so well received last year, we decided to bring back the Flash Back Boyz one more time with their good time rock-n-roll. Next we have Brad Zinn with his great comedy and impressions of classic Hollywood & Vegas comedians. Finally it wouldn t be Vegas without Elvis so we got Raymond Michael a renowned (and one of the best) Elvis impersonators around. You can view clips of these entertainers by searching the internet. Enjoy the summer with family and friends and we will be seeing a lot of you in September. Bob Golk, F316752 WMHA Senior Vice President Greetings to All: Already three months have gone by, and I have been very busy visiting chapters. In May, I visited the Gold Diggers and the Sierra Ramblers chapters. I drove to Oregon, stayed at the Seven Feathers RV Park and at The Mill RV Park in Coos Bay, Oregon, before my wife and I traveled on to the Kinetic Races in Eureka, CA, with the Sierra Ramblers. If you have never attended the Kinetic Races, it is a lot of fun (the Kinetic Races are always scheduled on Memorial Day weekend). On the last day of the Kinetic Races there was a parade in Ferndale, California. A quaint old town with unique shopping and excellent food. While we stayed at the county fairgrounds in Ferndale, I went on a tour boat in the Eureka harbor. On our way home from the rally in Ferndale we stayed at Konocti Resort RV Park. We had a great trip. In June, we had our Executive Board Meeting at River Run RV Park in Bakersfield. I think that everyone who attends the Indio rally in January 2018 will be in for a nice surprise come and find out what the surprise will be. On the drive to Bakersfield our coach broke down due to a faulty hose. The mechanic in Kettleman City arrived quickly and fixed the problem. Once home, I called Bob Tiffin and explained about the leaky hoses. Bob sent the part to our home, and the part arrived the next day.

PAGE 4 WESTERN BYWAYS VOLUME 31 ISSUE 3 Northern Area Vice President s Message (Con t) Central Area Vice President During the month of July, we are going to Jackson Rancheria to visit the Gold Diggers for a birthday celebration. We will also be discussing the rally in Indio. Safe and Happy Trails. Remember what FMCA is all about, having fun! Stephen M. Shade, F395353 WHMA Northern Area Vice President Greetings, As most of you are aware, as we were in route to an Amigos rally in Sonora, we were involved in an accident with the motorhome. We were not injured, however, it resulted in a total loss of the motorhome. We are in the process of looking for a replacement. We are therefore unable to visit chapters for now. There is always an upside to things. We were going to replace the refrigerator in the motorhome and now we don t have to. Now we get to replace the coach. We had purchased the motorhome new in 2001, so it was time for a new one anyway! We are again in Mesa, Arizona, where Joanne is having some more rehab on her knee. Returning home in a few days and Joanne can finish rehab at home. Guard Your Health, Fred Wells, F128327 WMHA Central Area Vice President

VOLUME 31 ISSUE 3 WESTERN BYWAYS PA GE 5 Southern Area Vice President I would also like to say, it is a pleasure working with this board. They are very dedicated, and did an excellent job of developing the budget and plans for the Indio outing. On a personal note, Ann has completed her chemo treatments and is starting to gain her strength back. We are starting to get out and about again, which is great. We have some very good friends who have supported Ann, and our daughter (who is also undergoing chemo and radiation treatments). Thank you for being there. Roy D. Mc Daniel, F322490 WMHA Southern Area Vice President I recently had the pleasure of visiting the California Southwinders chapter outing at Calico where I attended their business meeting. One of the topics was whether to change the name of the chapter or not. Part of their concern with the current name was that it was brand specific. While they accept all brand owners as members, the name might deter owners of other brands from looking at joining them. After discussion, it was decided to change the name to the California Cruisers, so we welcome the California Cruisers. While the name will change, their history remains the same. This is a fun group, and I appreciate the hospitality shown me by Carla, George, and the gang. In May, Barbara Van Ru was kind enough to invite me to attend their Rexasaurus Chapter rally in Indio. She even made sure I would not suffer from the cold (it was 110 degrees). I really enjoyed the opportunity to visit with all of the members over a delicious dinner. At the dinner I was honored to present the chapter with their 20-year anniversary award. We also had a general discussion with the group on whether towables should be allowed to join FMCA. The group was supportive of allowing them to become members. On the subject of allowing towables to become members, I thought it was interesting that all of the chapters I spoke to on the subject were in favor of the amendment except one. If this can be used as a barometer it will probably happen. In June, Ann and I took the motorhome out for the first time since January, when we attended the WMHA Executive Board meeting in Bakersfield.

PAGE 6 WESTERN BYWAYS VOLUME 31 ISSUE 3 River Run RV Park Celebrates 10 th Anniversary By Lon Cross, President WMHA On June 5, 2017, the Western Area Executive Board met at River Run RV Park in Bakersfield. Our meeting was held in their spacious clubhouse, which also has a very modern and workable kitchen. Our parking sites were clean and well maintained. The temperatures were in the mid 90s and it was nice that all the sites had 30/50-amp power to run our air conditioners. This was the first time that WMHA board met at this park. And it wasn t until then that Richard Gibbs mentioned that River Run would soon be celebrating their 10 th Anniversary. Richard also mentioned that he and Char were Rally Masters for the California Coasters, and they had to wait for the asphalt work to dry before they could go in. Ryan Uhles, and his wife, Noelle, are managers of the Park. Ryan had been working construction and was hired by his father to oversee the completion of the 122-site park. Ryan is also active in a leadership role with the California Association of RV Parks and Campgrounds. I would like to congratulate Ryan and Noelle and the River Run RV Park on their 10-year Anniversary. I also thank them for their valued support of our Indio Rally. Please read the recent press release (see address below) that goes into more detail. http://www.calarvc.org/river-run-rv-park-bakersfield-celebrating-10th-anniversary/ I know that many WMHA Chapters have held their rallies here. This was WMHA Exec Board s first time here and we will be going back as reservations have been made for next year s board meeting.

This was the site of our WMHA January 2017 Rally. FIND was the recipient of the proceeds from our 50-50 raffle. With our donation they were able to provide 5,043 meals. The 50-50 Raffle, just one of the great and fun things that takes place at the WMHA Indio Rally. PAGE 8 WESTERN BYWAYS VOLUME 31 ISSUE 3 MEMBERSHIP/ CHAPTER FAIR I m still sending out welcome e-mails to the new members of the Western Area (I receive a list from the National Office each month with these names). Some months we have a good response, other months not so many. Hopefully the membership person in your chapter is getting a list of the new members in your area you can receive this from the National Office also. It s not too early to start thinking about the Chapter Fair in Indio in January. I would appreciate hearing from someone in each chapter letting me know who the membership or contact person is. I have a list that I try to keep updated with the information on each chapter and who the contact person is that I can e-mail to anyone interested in a chapter. I also use this list to contact the person who is the contact person as well as the president of the chapter to let them know about the chapter fair and to see if they are interested in participating in Indio. The main idea of the chapter fair is to get the information about your chapter out to the people looking for a chapter to join. Your table does not have to be fancy the main thing is to be sure and have the name of your chapter and one or two people there to answer questions about your chapter. You can let me know anytime if you are interested in participating in the Chapter Fair I will be contacting each chapter within the next month or two about participation in the Chapter Fair. Alice Bernard Need a Western Area Badge? Anyone who is interested in a Western Motor Home Association badge please contact Alice Bernard by phone: 530-934- 7346 or cell phone 530-519-7346 or e-mail: bernardfrogfarm@yahoo.com The price of the badge is $11.50 (Which includes your name and F number). The hangers are $2.75 each. The hangers can be for your city or your job or your chapter. You may have several hangers if you like. Help Wanted Positions available at Indio: We need someone to take the captain position for the Decorating Crew. This is a very fun position and Sandy King is willing to help with the transition. We need a photographer for the 2018 rally. We also need a Donations Captain. Please contact Bob Golk at 661-599-3548 if you are interested.

The hours that you spend performing your responsibilities are really appreciated. I have an important request. Whenever your chapter holds an election of officers, or has an officer change, could you please send me the same information that you send to FMCA. As WMHA Secretary, I need to communicate with your officers during the year. To make sure that your officers receive the correspondence that I send out, I must have their current information. I need to receive your chapter s current information ASAP. If you have any questions about your duties as Secretary, please contact me. I am very happy to help you.
