NORTHWINDS July 2017 Porsche Club of America Shasta Region Inc. P.O. Box 991564 Redding, CA 96099-1564 Tourmeister Report July 2017 We started the second half of the Tour Year on the 16th of July. Six down, and four to go! This one was relatively short--160 miles; 3.5 hours of drive time. We started at the Starbuck's on Churn Creek with seven cars, added one on the way, and met up with another group at the Adobe Road Starbuck's in Red Bluff for a total of 15 Porsches. There were 30 participants in all. It seems that this is about average for our "day tours" this year. Heading east on SR36, all of the highly advertised construction crews were off, so the roads were open and paved, with no delays anywhere. At Mineral, we took one of our favorite "detours" on SR 172. This is a 6 mile route around the mountain through the town of Mill Creek. There are lots of hairpin turns and sometimes a scary moment, since the two-way road is barely wide enough for oncoming traffic. At the end, there is a scenic valley at which we stopped for a photo opportunity. Just around the bend on SR 89 is the Highlands Ranch Resort. It is always an excellent lunch, though they take a little longer than most of our lunch stops. But we weren't in a hurry, so we enjoyed the libations, the beautiful building, scenery and the awesome 79 degree weather. There were several other Porsche owners from Chester that had heard that the Club was going to be there, so they made the trip and joined us! After lunch, those that live in Chico took SR 32 back home. A couple of cars took a side trip to Chester for a visit. The rest of us backtracked on 36. Those that live near Red Bluff said "Adios" on their radios and continued on home when we got to Payne's Creek. That left eight of us to head up Lanes Valley Road and up the mountain on Wildcat for the spectacular view of the Tehama Valley. At the top, our group started to "peel off" as they headed to Shingletown and Dersch Road. We then headed west to Ash Creek where the 6-mile long Rock Wall borders the road. Then north on Parkland to Dersch and back to Redding. There were no adverse events, mechanical issues, etc. We did get the "opportunity" to pass three successive times on 36 without slowing down! The group performed as though they were a single car! We successfully got all 15 of us past and no one had to exceed 100 mph!!!! The next Tour is the longest single day Tour of the year---lunch at Bob's Ranch House in Etna. We haven't been able to do that one in many years due to the massive construction project on Buckhorn Summit. The project is done now, and all roads are open. See you on Saturday, August 12th.
