Day 1: Wednesday 8th May, 2019 MELBOURNE TO MILDURA Welcome to our 7 day coach tour to Broken Hill. After we have completed our home pickup service and boarded the coach we are ready to go Beyond the Darling River, on the edge of the sundown where they used to say you would find Broken Hill! It is a remote but fascinating place which was originally established as a mining town. Dominating the town is the Line of Lode the seven kilometre strip of what was the biggest deposit of silver, lead and zinc in the world. But there is much more to Broken Hill than mining as we will discover over the next few days. Our travel today takes us to Charlton and into Victoria s Mallee Region and onto Mildura for our first night on tour. OVERNIGHT: Best Western Chaffey International Motor Inn, MILDURA Day 2: Thursday 9th May, 2019 MILDURA TO BROKEN HILL After a delicious breakfast we join the Silver City Highway and head to Broken Hill about 3 hours away, stopping enroute for a morning break. We ll have lunch at one of the popular clubs before we commence our touring. The Silver City Mint and Art Centre is one of the best galleries in town featuring jewellery made here from Broken Hill silver, a Broken Hill mineral display and the dramatic Big Picture painted by P e t e r Anderson. It s the world s largest acrylic painting on canvas that totally immerses visitors into the local landscape. Our last stop of the day is the Royal Flying Doctor Base. After our tour here we make our way to our motel in time to freshen up for dinner. OVERNIGHT: The Desert Sand Motor Inn, BROKEN HILL
Day 3: Friday 10th May, 2019 BROKEN HILL AND SILVERTON We ll tour the town today with the help of a locally based expert. We will hear about the history of Broken Hill and see some of the historic buildings the Broken Hill Court House built in 1889, the Broken Hill Trades Hall (1898) and the Broken Hill Town Hall Façade. One of the best views of the town is from the top of the Line of Lode at the Miners Memorial (listing the names of more than 800 people who have died working at the mine). No visit to Broken Hill would be complete without a visit to Pro Hart s Gallery & the Jack Absalom Gallery. We farewell our guide and head to Silverton, a virtual ghost town but a number of the historic buildings remain. It s also the site of many well known movies such as Mad Max 2, Wake in Fright and Priscilla Queen of the Desert. We have lunch at the Silverton Pub before heading west of Broken Hill to The Living Desert Reserve. Here we ll see the Sculpture Symposium, created from large pieces of Wilcannia Sandstone by twelve of the finest sculptors from around the world. The arrangement of the stones provides one of the most spectacular views in the area. OVERNIGHT: The Desert Sand Motor Inn, BROKEN HILL
Day 4: Saturday 11th May, 2019 MENINDEE LAKE To the south of The Hill is Menindee Lake, the historic town of Menindee and t h e K i n c h e g a National Park. We take a look at the l a k e s and t h e township which acts as an oasis for wildlife amidst the dry red sand plains of the surrounding semi-arid region. We enjoy lunch at Maidens Hotel. It was here Burke and Wills camped in 1860, prior to their ill-fated trip to the Cooper Creek and the Gulf of Carpentaria. We head back to Broken Hill and have a free afternoon for personal sightseeing or perhaps a spot of shopping. OVERNIGHT: The Desert Sand Motor Inn, BROKEN HILL Day 5: Sunday 12th May, 2019 BROKEN HILL TO MILDURA We farewell our hosts today and start our journey home, retracing our steps as we backtrack to the Sunraysia District. We visit the Australian Inland Botanic Garden where plants from a very broad range of latitudes and environments thrive in Sunraysia s warm, dry climate and well-drained soils. A large rose garden and a rock garden are among the Gardens features and what better surroundings to enjoy our picnic lunches before a tour of the grounds. We enjoy some local sightseeing before checking into our accommodation for our last night away. OVERNIGHT: Best Western Chaffey International Motor Inn, MILDURA
Day 6: Monday 13th May, 2019 MILDURA - SILO ART TRAIL TO STAWELL The Wimmera-Mallee region has become Australia s largest outdoor gallery with the creation of a silo art trail stretching 200kms and linking some of Victoria s smallest towns. Today we follow this trail. First to Patchewollock, where it is hard to miss the 35m high silo man - local sheep and grain farmer Nick Hulland. We enjoy lunch at the Hopetoun Community Hotel Motel and take a look at the large and colourful wall mural in the centre of town depicting aspects of local history and the memorial fountain erected in 1929. Continuing south we arrive in Brim to view the magnificent work of Guido van Helten, depicting an anonymous multi-generational quartet of farmers. At Sheep Hills, we see a depiction of Wergaia and Wotjobaluk Elders alongside two young children. Our final silo visit is in Rupanyup featuring two local residents, both members of the local Rupanyup Football and Netball Club. After a very special day we arrive at our motel with time to freshen up before dinner. OVERNIGHT: Magdala Motor Lodge, STAWELL
Day 7: Tuesday 14th May, 2019 STAWELL TO HOME On our final tour day, we make our way to Halls Gap, situated in the Grampians National Park. Apart from the stunning scenery, the park is a natural oasis where plants and animals which have become extinct in other areas, flourish. Here we visit the Halls Gap Zoo. The zoo is actively involved in breeding and conservation programs for Brush-Tailed Bettongs, Tasmanian Devils, Bilbys, Bush Stone-Curlews, Quolls and Rock-Wallabies. Sadly, it is time to head home. We make a stop in Ararat for lunch before driving back to Melbourne to complete a fabulous tour looking around Victoria!
